This cake is a sort of Anglo-Italian amalgam. The flat, plain disc is reminiscent of the confections that sit geometrically arranged in patisserie windows in Italy; the sharp, syrupy sogginess borrows from the classic English teatime favourite, the lemon drizzle cake. It is a good marriage: I love Italian cooking in all respects save one — I find their cakes both too dry and too sweet. Here, though, the flavoursome grittiness of the polenta and tender rubble of ground almonds provide so much better a foil for the wholly desirable dampness than does the usual flour. But there is more to it than that. By some alchemical process, the lemon highlights the eggy butteriness of the cake, making it rich and sharp at the same time. If you were to try to imagine what lemon curd would taste like in cake form, this would be it. And please read the Additional Information section at the end of the recipe before proceeding. For US cup measures, use the toggle at the top of the ingredients list.

It was my book club’s choice for October and I really had not had any interest in reading it. I thought that it was just going to be like watching that crazy sweet 16 show that used to be on MTV. But this really had an endearing story about a young couple where the girlfriend was not prepared for what she was getting herself into when she went overseas to meet her boyfriend’s family. There was some shock and suspense, some mystery. There were times that I wanted to scream at people through the book, and there was a heartwarming love story. I will definitely be reading the sequel! I gave this book 5 out of 5 stars! Seriously, check it out! This book tells the story of a grumpy, washed up lawyer who stumbles upon a case of two boys who were raped by their family priest. The boys are brave enough to pursue getting justice. This was an interesting story of the redemption of the lawyer, a budding love story, two brave little boys, and the lengths that the church would go through to get the whole thing to go away. I really liked this book. It got a little wordy during some of the courtroom scenes, but other than that, it was a page-turner. I gave this book 4.5 out of 5 stars. All We Ever Wanted by Emily Giffin I was excited about this book, I am a big fan of Emily Giffin so when I heard she had a new book coming out, I was anxious to read it. This novel tells the story of a single dad and his daughter, as well as a woman in a loveless marriage and how their lives can affect each other. Lyla is a young girl who goes to a party and unfortunately passes out. While she is unconscious some disturbing photos are taken of her and although Lyla only wants this whole thing to go away, her father wants the boys to pay for what they did. Nina is the mother of the boy accused who is torn between siding with her son and husband who want the whole thing to just go away, and doing what she feels is writing and helping her son learn from his mistake. I liked this book, I didn’t love it but I definitely liked it. It was an easy, enjoyable read. I gave it 4 out of 5 stars. Our take on this iconic Thai street food vibrates with salty, sour, and sweet flavors. Thai cuisine is known for its symphony of salty, sweet, and sour flavors, and this hugely popular street food is no different. In our version, we achieved those flavors with a careful balance of fish sauce, sugar, and tamarind juice concentrate. Lime juice squeezed over the finished dish, along with a quick-to-make chile vinegar, added even more tangy kick. Soaking rice noodles in boiling water, versus cooking them in the hot water, prevented the delicate strands from getting too soft. Shrimp and egg bulked up the dish while bean sprouts, scallion greens, and peanuts added crunch.
