One of our favorite trips on our travels in Oaxaca has to the village of San Pedro Cajonos! Situated high in the mountain Sierra Zapoteca three hours from Oaxaca City, this is one of the most idyllic settings that one may ever find! Perched at the top of the mountains, with sweeping views of the surrounding canyons and distant pueblos, San Pedro Cajonos kisses the clouds and shines in its art forms. Most famous of San Pedro Cajonos artists, is the Blas Family of wood carvers. Their style is so unique and can be identified readily upon sight. Bright colors, and fine painting are their hallmarks. This figure is hand carved and painted by Javier Blas, the son of Medardo Blas, who passed away a few years back from a brain tumor. Javier commented to us while his father was towards the end of his struggle about the beauty of being able to carry on his father's art form. An excellent example of the beauty of folk-art traditions and their craftsmanship within family workshops! I love the sense of movement and the alert positioning of the body, as well as the coloring of this snake! Nicely painted and a great size, it will make an affordable addition to your collection. A standout piece at this price! There are no removable parts, and the artwork is signed by the artist. Approximate Measurements: 3 3/4" high x 8 3/4" wide x 4" deep
