You can’t buy happiness but you can buy ice cream. Whenever we’re in the mood for scoopfuls of creamy, ice cold delights, we head to Oakland’s Fentons Creamery – the oldest continuously operating creamery west of the Mississippi. Founded in 1884 by Elbridge Seth Fenton, it’s the birthplace of flavors like Toasted Almond, Swiss Milk Chocolate and Rocky Road! With Fentons’ 120th anniversary just around the corner, Todd and I took a tour of their in-house production facility, where over 50 flavors are made and mixed by hand. Batch by batch.
ARTIST INSPIRATION: This is a stylized scene of Oakland. This is one of my more intricate pieces, and having grown up in Oakland I felt passionate about this piece. While researching my landmark materials it was hard editing Oakland's many beautiful historic sites. The tiny icons are all relics of my past I experienced in the 60's and 70's. I added some new names and faces such as Peet's coffee, the Oracle Arena. I wanted to reflect Oakland's cultural diversity that thrives on community, and not just crime. It's perfect for a nursery or kids' room, or for anyone that wants a nostalgic piece of Oakland art. Note: The ratio/orientation (horizontal or vertical) of the artwork cannot changed or altered. Artist, muralist, printmaker, and educator Nina Wright, also known as Girl Mobb, started creating graffiti as a teenager in her hometown in rural Ohio. She found a community of street artists when she moved to Oakland, CA, but struggled to find a segment of women making similar work. Each time she was curated into an all-woman exhibition, the same 5-6 artists were also selected. This lack of female presence prompted Wright to start a mentorship program, an attempt to increase the number of female artists creating street art in the Bay Area. More
