One of the things I felt strongly about when thinking about teaching my primary kids with "I Am a Child of God" was that if each of them is a Child of God, then that means everyone they interact with is also a Child of God and should be treated with love. So I used some International Children of God to review and learn some new songs about this. Here's what I did. click here to download these International Kids Preparation. Copy, color and cut out cute international kids. Use card stock for durability. I used a book from my school teaching days, but there are several online options. Edupics.com has this great artwork. Click here to download a collection of their cute kids. You can make as many kids as you think you have time for. I made 10, five girls and five boys. My download option has 12. Also prepare a world out of blue and green paper or print this one. Make a list of songs and/or challenges. I don't assign these to the cut outs, we do the songs in my order regardless of which cut out is chosen. The list of songs and challenges we did is below. The ones with an asterisk are new ones to my primary but I wanted them to learn them because they go so well with this theme. I did a quick "sing and repeat" and I was amazed at how quickly they picked it up! I didn't get through all of the songs but maybe we'll be able to finish next week. click here to download Junior: I Am a Child of God vs 1 p. 2 Jesus said Love Everyone p. 61 I Am a Child of God vs 2 p. 2 *I'll Walk with You (first half) p. 140 Jesus Wants Me for a Sunbeam p. 60 I Am a Child of God vs 3 p. 2 *Shine On p. 144 I Love to See the Temple p. 95 I Am a Child of God vs. 4 p. 2 *I'll Walk with You (second half) p. 140 Senior: I Am a Child of God vs 1-3 p. 2 SIGNS *I'll Walk with You (first half) p. 140 Children All Over the World p. 16 I Am a Child of God chorus p. 2 SPANISH Jesus said Love Everyone p. 61 *I Am a Child of God verse p. 2 SPANISH *Feliz Cumpleanos p. 282 I will Follow God's Plan p. 164 *I'll Walk with You (second half) p. 140 I Lived in Heaven p. 4 Presentation. Line up the International Kids along the bottom of your chalkboard a place your 'world' in the middle of the chalkboard. Like this: Junior Primary. I called a child up to pick one of the International Kids and put it on the world, forming a circle around the world. Then we sang a song. I mentioned where the International Kid was from but we spent our time singing. Senior Primary. We sang a song and tried to earn an International Kid to put on the world. Sometimes we had to sing a song a few times. I let the children make three guesses about where the International Kid was from. About halfway through we had a quick discussion that went like this: Me: How are these kids different? Children: Different hair, clothes, skin, homes, language, food etc. Me: What do all these kids have in common? What do we have in common with them? Children: We all have bodies, families, spirits, homes. We're all children of God. (Bingo) Me: Which ones does Heavenly Father love and care about? Children: All of them. All of us. Me: So how should we treat each other? Children: With love, nicely, with respect. Here's what it should look like when finished. Happy Singing Time!

Well, it is the start of a New Primary Year and time to get going on the first program song of the year. If you are like me, or rather how I was before I got "booted" out of my singing job, {sniffle—sniffle} I liked to just have some singing fun the first week and spend time getting to know the new, little SUNBEAMS by singing all their favorite and familiar songs they've sung in nursery and let them be the stars of Singing Time by letting them be your helpers. Besides, it always seems to be chaotic the first week as the children and teachers try and figure out where they are supposed to be, so some fun, no pressure singing is just the ticket the first week. However, if you are ready to jump right in and get going on this month's song, here is a flip chart for "I Am a Child of God" for all four verses. I have also included the descant part in case you want to venture a stab at it. Since your Primary is probably very familiar with the chorus, I only added it once in the flip chart. If you want to have the chorus after each verse, just select those pages and print how many copies you want. I don't have time right now to post ideas on how to present the song, but you probably already have thought of or found some to do. If I have time later, I will post some ideas that I brainstormed when I was making my plans last fall before my demise as Primary Music Leader. ;-) SEE! I told you I would be back! In fact, stay tuned because sometime in the near future I plan on doing another give-away! YEAH!!! I Am a Child of God FC—Nalani
LDS lesson helps and handouts for Primary 2 Lesson 3: I am a Child of God
Welcome to my lesson resources for the Primary 1, I Am a Child of God manual used in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. I have developed an art or craft activity to accompany each lesson. You are welcome to use the activities for your lessons, free of charge, or as a faith-based activity for preschool aged children. The first lesson in the manual, "I Am a Child of God," uses the analogy of a princess or prince to describe the child's relationship with Heavenly Father. In the enrichment activities for the lesson it states, "Heavenly Father is the king of heaven and earth. Because we are his children we are princes and princesses." I took this idea of being a prince or princess and made a small storybook starring each child. The first page is a cover where the child can draw their face under a crown, and on the following pages the teacher can write in information about the child. I also created a brief note to send home with the children for their parents. It provides a summary of the main points of the lessons so the parents know what their child learned in class. The files for the booklets and note for parents are available to download here. Download the booklet here. Download the note to parents here. Below is the text of the booklet with suggestions for filling in the blank lines where the intention isn't clear. Most of the lines are taken directly from the lesson. Teachers can either ask the children the information in class and fill it in, or they can talk to the parents of the children beforehand. The example text is for a girl. There is also a version for a boy available to download. Once upon a time there was a girl named _______________ and she is a child of God. Heavenly Father knows her and loves her very much. He knows she __(admirable characteristics from the lesson)__. He knows she has ______________ hair and _____________eyes. He know she lives in ____________________ and that her favorite __(use any favorite thing here)_. He knows she is ________________ years old and that her favorite animal is a ___________________________________________. Heavenly Father even knows that when she grows up she wants to be a____________________________________. He knows she is sad when _________________________________.He knows she is happy when _______________________________. He also knows she likes to come to primary because ____________________________. _(child's name)_’s family also loves her very much, including her _(parents, siblings, grandparents, etc.)_. Heavenly Father is the king of heaven and earth, and because she is His daughter, she is a princess. _(child's name)_ should always remember she is a spirit child of Heavenly Father and He knows her and loves her. She can become more like Heavenly Father and she has a very important work to do here on earth that only she can do. In the frames on the pages between the text the children can draw in pictures that complement their answers, like their family, animals, and favorite things. When the children are finished I punch a hole in the top corner of the pages and tie them together with yarn or a curling ribbon bow. The children can take the booklet home and read again about how much Heavenly Father loves them. The lesson manual also suggests giving the children crowns with "I am a child of God" written on them. There are several good crown templates online. I use the one available at Skip to my Lou. LDS.org has a cute video of the song "I am a child of God" you can use to supplement the lesson. The video can be downloaded here. Finding out the answers to the blank lines in the text of the booklet gives the teacher an opportunity to get to know each child better as they begin the year, and helps each child feel valued and important.
