It’s been a bit of a glove factory around here so I thought I’d do something a little different: wristwarmers! But seriously, I’ve been amassing a collection lately of beautiful photos of beautiful wristwarmers (armwarmers, sweaterless sleeves, whatever you want to call them). I love them. The urge was rolling around in the back of […]

Laar is now available as a single pattern, it was first published in The Shetland Trader-Book One, a collection of 10 patterns inspired by the Shetland Islands. This garment is worked in a lace weight yarn at a loose gauge producing a fabric that can be worn with plenty of negative ease. It’s the feminine touches that make this pretty cardigan a pleasure to wear, delicate picots on the hem and cuffs, a sweet scooped neck, and pleats at an empire waist. This garment is worked bottom up in once piece dividing at the armholes to work back and fronts separately. After the shoulders are joined stitches are picked up from the armhole and the sleeve cap is shaped using short rows. The finished Laar is pictured in Jaggerspun Zephyr Wool-Silk in Curry.

As generous a yarn as we could dream up, Purl Soho's Gentle Giant is for anyone with a soft spot for cozy and an eye for beauty! In over two dozen colors, its gorgeous palette ranges from gentle White Peppercorn to glowing Super Pink... So many beauties to choose from! Made in Peru, Gentle Giant is certified to be free of substances that may be harmful to human health. The fiber is from the merino sheep breed, which is wool at its best: soft but strong, light but warm, and with enough elasticity that your knits will hold their shape. The loose and lofty spin of this single ply makes full use of merino's softness and also traps air to insulate you from the cold. Gentle Giant knits up at a great, big 1.5 stitches to the inch and is the perfect go-to yarn for quick-but-gorgeous knits: warm winter blankets, sumptuous hats and scarves, and high-drama cowls!

As all knitters are unique, an extra skein is suggested for peace of mind. If you do not end up needing it, make a second pair for a friend or loved one. :-)The wave cable pattern is a modified version of a cable used for the Am Kamin sweater in the book “New Style of Heirloom Knitting”, by Toshiyuki Shimada. The sample is shown in Dale Garn Heilo. A suggested substitute yarn is shown below.

The Design “Just enough ruffle.” Our accountant Barb Steinberg is a masterful weaver but claims she’s “not much of a knitter.” She arrived one month-end wearing this charming scarf and, when we asked for the pattern, she said she wasn’t quite sure what she’d done. Well, we took it off her, dissected it, wrote it up, and the now-famous Barb’s Koigu Ruffle has become one of our most popular patterns ever. “Not much of a knitter” indeed! See how we've used this pattern! The Details FINISHED SIZE Approx. 6"/15cm x 22"/56cm; will stretch in length with wearing. YARN2 skeins Koigu KPPPM (175 yds/160m each); shown in Color 105D.Or approx. 350 yds/320m of an equivalent fingering-weight yarn. NEEDLESUS 4 (3.5mm) 24"/60cm circular, or size to get gauge.US 6 (4mm) 24—32"/60—80cm circular, or 2 sizes larger than size to get gauge. GAUGEApprox. 24 sts = 4"/10cm in stockinette stitch on smaller needles. KNITTER'S NOTES This stockinette stitch scarf is knit lengthwise. You start with 600+ stitches, do a number of decrease rows, knit straight, then do a number of increase rows. The finished dimensions are spot on for wearing loosely wrapped around the neck with the ruffles softly framing your face. As it says in the pattern—"a little ruffle goes a long way." 600+ stitches is a lot of stitches to cast-on no matter what method you choose. We recommend a cable cast-on because of the nice edge it creates when knitting in stockinette stitch. If you prefer to use a long-tail cast-on, and are worried about having a long enough "tail", try this method: take the beginning and end strands from your ball and tie them together in a knot, about 8" from the end. Now use each of these strands to do your long-tail cast-on. When you complete the cast-on, cut one of the strands loose, leaving an 8 inch tail. You're left with two extra ends to weave in, but no worries about running out of yarn!

The different textures look great in a variety of yarns - from solid wools to hand-dyed silk/alpaca/cashmere blends - and keep the knitting interesting but not difficult. Pattern is now available - KAL here LAGOM - n: not too much, not too little, just enough …. I find this is actually an important principle in knitting - it’s nice to have enough to do to keep you interested, but not so much that it needs too much concentration. I thought this would make perfect holiday knitting - either to make a last minute present - or to knit while chatting to people over the holidays. I have listed this for DK weight, but you could make it in any weight using a needle size that gives you nice drape (generally 1-2 sizes larger than listed on the label) and allowing roughly the specified yardage. The pattern includes 2 versions - one long and shallow that works as a scarf, the other deeper and symmetrical which works as a large scarf or a drape-over-the-shoulders shawl - see photos and project pages.
