I really do love fall. I always have. The beautiful colors, the crisp air, pumpkin spiced everything... and perhaps most importantly, the end of MOSQUITOES! Mind you, this year wasn't too bad for the guys, but I remember a few years back the mosquitoes in our area were truly out of this world. Our neighbours

We don't do a lot of finger painting in our classroom, but we probably should! The children love to stick their hands and fingers into the paint - even when supplied with brushes and instructions to use them! :) This past week, I thought, why fight it? Painting is fun, but indulging in the act of dipping hands and fingers into the paint makes it an awesome sensory experience, as well! So we did some fall tree finger painting and saw quite the variety of results! There were trees with small fingerprint leaves evenly distributed around the page... trees with large blobs of leaves and fully painted trunks and branches... and then there were the full-on hand smeared extravaganzas! That reminds me. You'll want to have paint smocks on hand as well as some damp paper towels for finger wiping at the table! But surprisingly, the finger painting process was not much messier than when we use paint brushes. When I prepared this craft, I cut the tree shapes out of brown paper. The students then glued the tree cut outs onto a blue page before they started painting. Another option would be to print copies of a tree image on blue paper and then have the children do the painting directly on the page. The students could then colour or paint the tree trunk AND add the leaves. (And you would save time by not having to cut anything out!) If you'd like to try this craft in your classroom, you may want to download the free tree printable below. And if you'd like to try a similar, but more involved project, you may want to download this page of 4 trees. Your class could paint one for each season! If you decide to try worksheet #2, you may want to do one tree at a time to avoid confusion (and lots of smudging!) Since the trees on this printable are smaller, you may also want to consider having the students paint the leaves on these trees with a Q-tip rather than their fingers - or at least offering the suggestion! Hi friends! It feels like forever since my last weekly round-up post! Here is what we have been up to in our classroom! Scroll to the bottom for the freebie! 1. NUMBER SENSE LOOSE PARTS TRAY I switched up my math loose parts tray and the kids ate it up this week! They are obsessed with gems, so I think the rhinestones helped. In the tray I put magnetic numbers, dominos, rhinestones and blocks with the words and, make (for composing numbers), numbers with dots (for extra support) and +, - and = signs to encourage addition and subtraction. 2. ROLL & COMPOSE We have been working on composing numbers in math so I modelled whole group, then set out this "Roll & Compose" as a math centre. Students are instructed to roll both dice, place the dice in a box and make the composing number sentence with magnetic letters. You can find this "Roll & Compose" centre in my "Composing Numbers for Kindergarten" pack on TPT. Click here or on the image below if you are interested in taking a look! If you want more ideas for composing numbers you can read my full composing numbers blog post here. 3. BEE INQUIRY A few of my kids had questions about bees, so we did a K-W-L chart with the whole class to see what else they were wondering about bees. We got so many great questions! We started by reading the book "Give Bees a Chance" by Bethany Barton (which we loved! It is a funny book with lots of interesting facts, great for Kindergarten!) and we wrote down what we learned about bees. I was so impressed with some of their pictures too, I have some amazing little artists! "I learned that bees have 5 eyes." "I learned that bees have 2 stomachs." If you are interested in the recording sheet I use for inquiry writing, you can find it in my "Inquiry Writing Templates for Kindergarten" pack by clicking here or on the image below: 4. ST. PATRICK PRINTING Can you believe it's March already next week!? Since St. Patrick's Day is during March Break, we usually have some of the centres out a bit early. Here are the tracing sheets I added to the dry erase centre after school today for next week. My "St. Patrick's Day Activities" pack got a big update earlier this week so be sure to re-download it if you own it! If you want to check it out, you can click here or on the image below: 5. MYSTERY CVC WORDS Here's another new centre I had out for the kids to try this week! I wanted something that would work on the skills my kids needed most; identifying beginning sounds, blending sounds and reading CVC words! This centre combines all 3 skills. It was a little challenging for some of my JK's but the SK's were great helpers and many kids worked in pairs to solve the mats together. I had lots of requests to share these mats, so it's now available in my TPT store. You can click here or on the image below to check it out if you are interested! 6. 2D SHAPE PUSH PIN SHEETS {FREEBIE} I posted this photo to my Instagram stories and got a request to post the file, so here it is! Print, slice in half and staple these sheets to construction paper and set them out with push pins. Students poke each dot and peel the copy paper off at the end to uncover their picture! It's great for perseverance, concentration and fine motor development! My kids love it! You can grab these for free by clicking here or on the image below: Ok that's it from me for this week! Have a great weekend! - Yukari

I just wrapped up a super fun and VERY COLORFUL Fauve-inspired self-portrait lesson with my fourth grade kiddos. This lesson included so many things: drawing a cartoon or caricature version of ourselves, using chalk pastel in an unusual way, creating pattern and design with oil pastel for a watercolor resist. It was mixed-media to the max with beautiful results. Here's a quickie lesson I put together just for you and your kiddos: Lemme just say this: I DO NOT enjoy teaching self-portrait drawing to my older kids. They are so stinkin' hard on them selves that it is painful to watch. We will do a more in depth selfie drawing later this year (if time allows) but for now, this was a fun way to ease in to it. These works of art will be featured in our Artome Art Show and therefore have to be 9" X 12"...I really think this would be a great lesson on a bigger scale as the kids could achieve more detail. Normally, my lesson for fourth grade and Artome is this Romero Britto one. While I love that lesson, it does take forever. Also...I have a group of kiddos this year that would just be frustrated with that lesson. I decided to create a lesson based around their interests (working big and bold!) and their attention span (I know my people, what can I say) and this proved to be it. Each kiddo was super proud and successful. Day One: Each kiddo had a bingo dauber filled with slightly diluted India ink. After doing some quiet sketching for the first five minutes, we gathered and chatted about creating simple selfies on our paper. Because of the large line of the dauber and the small size of the paper, the kids learned quickly that they had to work big and without tiny details. They also were not to use pencil first but to just GO FOR IT. I only had one rule: YOU CAN MAKE AS MANY AS YOU LIKE...but if you start a selfie, even if you think it is a "mess up", you must finish it. Each kid ended up with between 3- 5 to choose from for the next class. Extras will be used in upcoming projects. The following art class, we started using chalk and "elephant snot" or liquid starch. I get my Sta-Flo liquid starch from Walmart. The best chalk pastels I have found are made by Faber-Castell. The colors are just so bright! Day Two: Chalk and starch those bad boys! If they finished one, many kids asked to work on their other drawings. I was totes cool with that! Day Three: Create a background! Using our Sargent bright oil pastels, we drew patterns all over the background of our selfies. Then we used liquid watercolor over that. Each is just as beautiful as the next! I cannot wait to see these at our art show. Will keep you posted on what the other kiddos are creating!
