So for the third in my series of lady portrait-type assignments, I've got this more realistic one for the LA Times! No sassy bra-ladies this time ;). Joey Santos came to me with an article in the weekend issue about spring tips and trends in makeup as told by Carmandy of What Not To Wear fame (I used to watch What Not To Wear all the time, to Sam's chagrin). The general theme was out with the old and in with the new and fresh, with a particular emphasis on floral colors like corals, pinks, and reds. I was feeling the zest of spring and wanted to do something light and airy with plants and flowers to signify the season. The assignment turnaround was just 4 days from start to finish, so my sketches were necessarily brief. I had a little trepidation about doing the sketch that was chosen because I wanted the girl to look dreamy but not too silly, though I'm very happy with how it turned out. Joey also suggested adding her other hand putting makeup on, and toning down the floral wreath-- a good call on both counts! I've been trying to expand my color palette to include some more neutral colors, so I wanted to limit my brights to just the pinks and reds spoken of in the article. Because the emphasis is on the face and the "prettiness" of it all, I really enjoyed going with a more realistic fashiony style. It turned out to be one of my new favorite pieces, I hope you like it too! :)
Tomorrow I will start another homeschool class - Recorder Karate 101. I briefly mentioned this in a previous post, but thought I would share a bit about what I will be doing. Each of the classes over a 6-week period will last an hour and a half. During the class I will pack in information about the recorder - it's history, how to take care of it, how to hold it and obviously how to play it. I will also include lots of games and activities to reinforce rhythm and notes on the staff. As a way to give them some extra visuals, I included a brief "cut and paste" project. Here is a look at some of the supplies I used, but to give you a list, I made the staves and blank recorder sheets on the computer and cut them to fit on these "cards". I put them together ahead of time because I wanted the focus to be on the notes and which holes on the recorder to cover, rather than worrying about the kids getting them put together correctly. I also put the letters on 1 1/2 inch square labels so they were easy to peel and stick. Add in a bit of tape and cardstock, and these are ready to put together. The students will be allowed to choose the colors they want as I made a huge stack of all different colors. All they need to do is choose a color, glue it down on the colored cardstock they choose and then fill in the note on the staff and fill in the holes on the blank recorder inside. This is a brief look at the one I did as an example. After I got done getting these all ready, I thought this might work for early piano/guitar students. By changing the recorder portion to a keyboard or a fretboard, we could easily make a book together of their first notes. Perhaps part of their lesson would be to add one of these as the notes are introduced to them. What do you think? I shall have to think on that one a bit! And of course...what would a recorder class be without the "Recorder Dude"? He stands about 3 feet tall, is made of foam and has velcro under each of his fingers. As the kids learn a new note, "Recorder Dude" will demonstrate the proper way to play it. I think this cute guy needs a better name though, so I'm planning to have this class come up with something! That's a look at what I've been working on. I'll be sure to post some pictures and some more ideas as we go through the coming weeks.

This week I start the first of three camps I will be doing this summer. This week it's MUSIC OLYMPICS! This is the third year I have run this camp and it's still just as popular. I've added some new games and activities so it will be fresh for some of my repeat campers. I'll be sure to post about some of the things we do and shortly I will have those camp plans also available for purchase. In the meantime, here's a look at some of the signs I made for the week. Here's the sign that is set up at the registration table when campers first check in on Monday. It measures 30" x 40" so it's nice and big and makes a statement when they arrive. I cut the letters and music notes out with my die-cutting machine and cut the rings out by tracing around a dish or two. I also laminated it which helps it to look brand new even after three years! If you've followed my blog, you know that I also like to use signs to designate the area of learning as we go throughout the week. The following signs are 15" x 20" and also laminated. I use packing tape to attach them to metal garden posts around the play area outside. This sign is used in the area where we work on note identification. All kinds of games and activities happen to teach and reinforce notes on the grand staff. Depending upon the level of the students I have in camp, we may focus on just the treble clef or both the treble and the bass. This sign obviously designates the area where we work on rhythm. We do loads of creative activities to work on recognizing note values, working on steady beat and working to build measures with the correct time signature. This sign is placed in the area where we work on music terminology. We work on about 20 different terms and by the end of the week, they know them well. It's great when they're having so much fun they don't know they're learning! I also like to teach intervals - both melodic and harmonic. This area is loads of fun and the campers really love all the activities we do. Lastly, at every camp, I always have this rest sign set up under a canopy. This is a place we just get out of the sun and sit on our beach towels. We also have our snack in this area. Currently my living room is piled high with stuff that's ready to put out first thing in the morning. It will be a busy week, but a really fun one and I'm looking forward to it. If you're putting on a camp this summer, I'd love to hear about it!

Koopa Troopas are common enemies in the Super Mario series that resemble a turtle. They walk around on their two feet and if tapped twice on its shell, Koopa Troopa will spin around trying to home into the nearest person. They originally walked on four feet, which is rarely seen in later titles. Usually, a Koopa Troopa has a green shell, but there are also red and blue variants, as well as Dry Bones, a skeleton Koopa Troopa. Their Koopa Shell can be used as items.
