My sister introduced me to this book quite a few years ago and it is one of our Christmas favorites each year! Read “Mortimer's Christmas Manger” by Karma Wilson … this sweet little mouse is tired of living in a cold, cramped, creepy hole in the wall. So he ventures out at Christmastime and “what he finds is wonderful!” Make a candy cane mouse! Use this simple pattern from Martha Stewart. Trace & cut out on felt. Assemble and add eyes and a felt or pom pom nose with craft glue. Insert a candy cane for the tail! Nativity finger puppets … in the book, Mortimer makes room for himself in the nativity set displayed on the table. Print out these free nativity finger puppets from Craftaholics Anonymouse! Cut out, fold and tape each one. Color! Insert little fingers and have fun re-telling the story of Baby Jesus. Brown Paper Bag Gingerbread House … at the end of the story, Mortimer finds a sweet new house just his size. Print out this cute gingerbread house from Making Friends (you can print in color or black & white!) Use as a great coloring page. Or color, cut out and glue to the front of a small brown paper bag. Fill the bag with treats or a small gift.

Through the story of Samuel, we learn that God seeks an obedient, reverent and ready heart to whom He can speak and trust with His word. Samuel shows children that as they learn to listen, obey and respect their parents, and their teachers, they also learn to hear and obey God. Bible Truth: Samuel listened to God's voice. Bible Story: When God called Samuel's name, Samuel learned to say, "Speak Lord, Your servant is listening". Bible Study: 1 Samuel 1:1-3:19 teach Along with pictures from a Bible Storybook, I include these visuals and actions to draw my students into the lesson of Samuel. Cradle and hold a baby doll as Samuel, Hannah's answer to prayer. I gathered up a couple gold items from around my house to describe the ways that Samuel learned to help and serve in the tabernacle. You could use a fancy looking bowl, cup, vase, candle holder, or anything else you may have. The idea is to show the children that Samuel learned how to take great care of the things that were used to worship God. We know for sure that Samuel opened the doors of the tabernacle every morning. He listened to Eli's instructions, and obeyed everything that Eli told him to do. Then, I invite the children to role play the part of Samuel, while play the part of Eli. They lay down and pretend to sleep. I say, "Samuel! Samuel!" They stand up and run (in place) and then repeat after me, "Here I am. Did you call me." I tell them to go back and lay down, and call for Samuel twice more. On the fourth time, I teach the kids to say, "Speak Lord, Your servant is listening." sing Sing "Are You Sleeping (Samuel)?" with the actions as fun way to reinforce this lesson. play samuel scripture pass Choose one of the objects that you used to represent items that were used for worship in the tabernacle that you don't mind the children handling. Gather the children into a circle. Remind them that Samuel learned how to take great care of the things in the tabernacle. Explain that in this game, they are going to be very respectful with the item you have chosen, just as Samuel was. Play a children's worship song as you pass the item around the circle. Randomly stop the music. Invite the child who is holding the item when the music stops to stand up. Ask, "What did Samuel say when God called his name?" Help the child repeat Samuel's response from 1 Samuel 3:10, "Speak LORD, Your servant is listening." Continue playing the game, ensuring that each child has a turn to repeat the verse. craft sleeping samuel, sitting samuel Lay Samuel down in bed, and sit him when he hears the LORD call his name. For this craft you will need: this print out card stock felt scissors (paper & fabric) glue crayons To prepare, print page one onto regular paper, and page two onto card stock. Cut out the Samuel figures. For each child, cut one piece of felt to approximately 2.5" x 5". Cut another piece of felt to approximately 2.5" x 3.5". In class provide crayons for the children to color Samuel and the tabernacle scene. Help them apply glue to attach the larger piece of felt to the activity page, and then apply glue to three sides of the smaller felt to create a "pocket" for Samuel. Fold the Samuel figures at the waist. Put him into the felt "pocket" to lay down in bed, and then pull him out just enough to sit up and say, "Speak Lord, Your servant is listening."

Free hero graphics for the kids ministry lesson on Matthew (also called Levi) based on the passage in Matthew 9.
I view the story of Jesus blessing the little children as a template for my ministry. Let me explain. The children were not going to Jesus on their own, people were bringing them to Him. To me, the parents, grandparents and teachers who brought the children to Jesus, are the heroes of this story. They recognized the importance of bringing the children to Jesus, and they were willing to face adversity for this cause. Precious children received the incredible love and touch of the Savior because of the faith and perseverance of those who loved and cared for them. Our calling as teachers is to lead the children in our care to Jesus, so that He might "take them up in His arms, put His hands on them and bless them." That is the ultimate goal of every interaction, lesson, story, song, game and craft in my classroom. A touch from Jesus is what will make the difference in a child's heart and life. I simply want to be one that brings the children to Him, and if you are reading this, I'm sure that you do too. Join me this week as we lead our children to know and experience the indescribable love of Jesus! Bible Truth: Jesus loves me all the time. Bible Story: Jesus blesses little children. Bible Study: Mark 10:13-16; Luke 18:15-17 teach interactive story-telling For an interactive way to tell the story of Jesus blessing the children, print out these visuals onto card stock. Cut them out and attach each one to a craft stick. Gather enough child-like figurines (such as dolls from a dollhouse, or Lego people) for each child to hold during the lesson. As you tell the story, have your Bible open your lap, hold up the Jesus figure. Invite the children to move their figurines towards Jesus. Hold up the stop sign to stop them, as you explain that the disciples thought Jesus was too busy with other important people, and didn't have time to be bothered by children. But Jesus said, "Let the little children come to Me." Hold up the happy heart as you motion for the children to move their figurines to Jesus. Show a picture of Jesus, with the children in His lap, as you explain that Jesus loves them, and always has time for them. power point visual Here is a power point slideshow of the story that could be shown from a laptop or tablet as you tell the story. The slideshow is part of a beautiful collection of 100 Bible story power points, which can be purchased here for $39.99. With accurate depictions, at less than a dollar per story, I think this is a worthwhile investment for your ministry! sing Two of the ultimate classics in children's songs are great to sing for this lesson. Jesus Loves the Little Children Jesus Loves Me (traditional style) Jesus Loves Me (upbeat - fun to dance along!) This is fun way to emphasize that we know Jesus loves us because the Bible tells us so. Before singing "Jesus Loves Me" say to the children, "Let's sing Jesus loves me this I know for Spiderman tells me so. Is that right?" Assuming the children know the song they will say no, and try to correct you. Say, "Oh! Oh! Ok. Jesus loves me this I know for Frozen tells me so!" The children will stop and correct you again. You can use other characters or movies that your children find appealing. Say, "I'm so glad that God gave us the Bible to tell us how much Jesus loves us!" By substituting the word Bible in the first line of the song with other characters or movies that are appealing to the children, you are reinforcing the idea that they may enjoy these things, but the Bible is special and different, because it tells us that Jesus loves us. (This is a clever little trick that I learned years ago from Cheryon Unruh, who pioneered the preschool ministry in our church.) play Jesus loves me pass This is a game similar to the concept of "Hot Potato." It's a simple game to reinforce the love of Jesus for each child in your class. For this version of the game in this lesson you will need: a heart-shaped object such as a pillow or candy box music such as one of the songs listed above The children sit in a circle and pass around the heart-shaped object while music is playing. When you stop the music, whoever is holding the heart stands up. Say to the class, "Does Jesus love ___________ (child's name)?" The class responds, "Yes! Jesus loves ____________ (child's name)!" Cheer for the child as they sit down. Start the music and continue passing the heart until each child has a had a turn. Instead of a heart-shaped object, you could pass around a Bible, reminding children the children that we know Jesus loves us because the Bible tells us so. craft coloring page Print this coloring page. Jesus loves me watches Kids love having their own watches to wear! For this craft you will need: this watch face print out card stock scissors Foamies Velcro glue crayons, markers and/or glitter To prepare, print out the watch faces onto card stock, and cut one out for each child. Cut Foamies into approximately 1" x 6" strips. In class, provide crayons or markers for kids to color their watch faces. It would be fun to a little red glitter to the heart if you are so inclined. Help the children glue the watch face to a Foamie strip, and attach Velcro to each end of the strip as the fastener. Now they can wear their watches to remember today's lesson and Jesus' love for them! tracing fun Here is a tracing worksheet that I created for children to color and work on basic writing skills as they trace the lines leading the children to Jesus. This activity would be a little easier and more fun to do with markers! Jesus loves me paper dolls Here is the link to these cute and simple paper dolls. She has costumes for them too, but for our purposes, I will just use the black and white versions of boy and girl as they are. Print them onto cards stock, and cut them out. Children could color them, and/or glue small pieces of fabric to them as clothes. Attach a "Jesus Loves Me" sticker to each paper doll. If no such sticker is available, cut out small hearts, write "Jesus Loves Me" on them, and glue them to each paper doll. This week is Elisha telling King Ahab and the people that they have to decide: Worship God or Baal. Review: Last week we started our lessons on Elijah. God told Elijah to stay by a brook called Cherith. God sent ravens with meat and bread in the morning and the evening for Elijah to eat. When the brook didn't have water anymore, God told Elijah to go find a widow by the city gates. Elijah found her and he asked her to feed him. She said told Elijah that there was only enough to make one loaf of bread, but Elijah told the widow that there would be enough for all of them. That was a miracle, and when the widow's son died, Elijah (and God) brought him back to life again. That was another miracle! Lesson found in 1 Kings 18: After three years, God told Elijah to go see Ahab. God also told Elijah that there would be rain again. King Ahab saw Elijah and said Elijah is trouble in Israel, but Elijah replied that King Ahab was the one causing trouble! He and his father has been worshipping Baal, and not God! Elijah told King Ahab to pick either God or Baal to worship. He couldn’t worship both. Elijah said “I am the only prophet for God, but Baal has 450 prophets. Elijah told King Ahab to gather all the people of Israel and meet at Mount Carmel. Elijah told King Ahab to bring the 450 prophets of Baal and the 400 prophets of Asherah. (Another idol) Elijah asked the people, "How long are you going to be undecided? You can't worship God and Baal! You have to pick who you will worship!" But the people wouldn't answer Elijah. Elijah said he was the only prophet for God and Baal had 450 prophets. Elijah suggested that they each take a bull, cut it up into pieces and lay it on the wood, without a fire under it. You can call your gods to light the fire and then I will call my God. King Ahab did what Elijah suggested, and Elijah told them to go first. They prepared the bull on the wood but didn't start the fire. They called out to Baal from morning until noon. No answer! No fire! Elijah mocked them and told them “Maybe your god is sleeping or busy or something. Shout out louder!” They called louder for Baal to start the fire and they cut themselves. They kept calling for Baal to start the fire until the evening, but still no fire. Nothing happened! Finally, Elijah told the people to come stand by him. Elijah took 12 stones, to represent the 12 Tribes and built an altar. Download a poster here. Elijah made a trench around the altar, added the wood and put the cut-up bull on it. Elijah said to fill four water pots full of water and to pour it on the sacrifice and on the wood. Elijah had them pour four pots of water on it three times. Water ran down all over the altar and filled the trench! Elijah called to God and said "Let it be known to the people today that You are the God in Israel and that I am Your prophet! Hear me, God and let the people know that You are the Lord God that they need to worship!" When Elijah called to God to start the fire, the fire burned up the sacrifice along with the wood, the stones and even the water in the trench! The people believed in God. They fell on their faces and said, "The Lord, He is God!" God sent a cloud, and the drought was over! The sky went dark, and God sent clouds with heavy winds and rain. I had the above altar set up on the table while we talked about Baal, then as I talked about Elijah setting up the altar, I stacked up the 12 rocks I had to make another altar. They seemed to like this visual, and they were all counting to make sure I had 12! When we were done with the lesson, I spread out the rocks and let them pick one and they wrote The Lord is God with the scripture from today's Bible verse. They love rocks and were asking if they could have one before we were finished! This is a good worksheet to add to the thoughts of the lesson, if you have time. If you wanted to, you could just print one to use for the discussion, even though, I printed one for everyone so they could make big X's and circle the pictures! Click here to print it. This is being used with each of the Elijah and Elisha lessons. Bible Verse: 1 Kings 18:39 Scripture taken from the New King James Version®. Copyright © 1982 by Thomas Nelson. Used by permission.

This seems like quite a complicated craft, but it's worth it, even if it's just used by the leader as a storytelling aid! I've tried to show step by step what to do... It's probably best to stick all of the pieces onto card to start off with as this will make it more sturdy- either that or print onto card! If you do this, you will still need the A5 piece of card (see instructions) Print off the sheet with all the sections on it... Cut all the sections out (including the blank middle 'window' on the main section). Get a piece of A5 sized card and trim it to fit the width of the flames section. Stick the flames section to the top of the card. Fold the main section along the fold line and fit the fold over the top of the card. Glue the back section down. Place the tab section over the flames... (don't stick it down!) Fold the top of the main section over the card and stick it down, leaving room around the 'window' for the tab to be pulled backwards and forwards. Draw 'wind' shapes on the tab (in the Bible it only talks about the sound of a wind, but I'm using some artistic license!) Pull the tab to reveal the flames above the disciples' heads! To print out the sheet, click here.
