I wanted to do a chapter on the Tudors because all of my life I have lived near to Hampton Court Palace. I used to drive past it every day on my way to school. The Tudors are fascinating and I especially love the way Hans Holbein captures them in his work. The Tudors have also inspired contemporary designers such as Josie Beckett and KTZ. The Ambassadors (1533) Arguably Holbein's most famous painting. This image is riddled with hidden symbols and illusions. Both of which I find fascinating and influential on the songs I write with Alpines. Portraits Here are some more paintings of the Tudors by Holbein. Henry VIII Mary Tudor Catherine Howard Lord of Morette Miniatures Holbein focused on painting miniatures during the last decade of his life. They were small portraits which worn as a kind of jewel or brooch. Jewellery Hans Holbein also designed jewellery and these sketches display his interest in using precious gemstones and ornate gold patterns (also known as polychrome enamel) . The Cleveland Museum of Art debuts a show of freshly restored renaissance tapestries from the Uffizi Galleries.

When I posted this weeks rate the dress, I was aware that numerous French queens had been painted in dark blue dresses with fleur de lys patterns, and intended to do a whole post about the trend. Then the Lady of Portland House pointed out that the dresses in some of the paintings are very similar. Too similar. In fact, I think they are the same dress. Fascinatingly, it looks like Marie de Medici, the Mother in Law of Anne, may have been painted in the dress first: And then Anne immediately seized on the idea, and had her own portrait done in the dress, only she got Rubens to do it, so it looked better than Maria’s version (what a way to up your mother in law!). Maria got her revenge in two ways. First, she commissioning Rubens to do an entire series celebrating her life, struggles and triumphs, including a coronation scene with her wearing the dress, painted at the same time as Anne’s portrait.
