Interview with a Successful Cosmetologist: Explore the journey, challenges, impact, and trends of a Nigerian beauty professional.
Artist: Christian Okwanekwe Artwork Story: Ever heard the popular Nigerian adage "na bottom pot nai dey sweet pass." meaning the food at the bottom of the pot tastes better. This is particularly true when large portions are cooked in relatively smaller aluminium pots making it difficult to stir thoroughly leading to some of the spices settling to the bottom as the food cooks. And with popular delicacies like jollof rice, bean porridge and yam porridge, it’s believed to taste even better when burnt. Loud scrapings of aluminium pots are common sounds in many neighbourhoods. Here, we see Nkechi who patiently waited for the rest of her family to take their share of food. Now she happily has the pot with the bottom burnt jollof rice to herself.

'New York would bring with it a whole new world of possibilities and trouble.' Soon to begin her freshman year, Nkechi, a young voodoo witch, is unsure what to expect. Alone in New York, and still coming to terms with the death of her mother, Nkechi worries that she will struggle to keep her magic hidden, and is afraid that her mortal classmates will reject her quirky personality. Fortunately, Columbia College is a big place, and she soon finds her people in the form of Charlie, a mortal, and Kosum, a fellow witch, who quickly introduces Nkechi to the local coven. But all is not as it seems, and with her life finally going in the right direction, the last thing she expects is for a mysterious girl infused with magic to implode right in front of her. Determined to discover who is behind these magical occurrences, Nkechi embarks on a journey that forces her to confront her past, re-evaluate her present and embrace her future.
Designer Note: The original yarn used here (Nashua Handknits Wooly Stripes) has unfortunately been discontinued. I’m often asked for suggested substitutes which then can be discontinued as well. Currently, March 2013, many knitters tell me Taiyo Aran has been successfully substituted. Oct 2013 a reader tells me Mochi Plus from Crystal Palace Yarns is also an excellent substitute. Creative Poems Aran, Kaleidoscope, Odin and Filzwolle Fine Color appear to be an almost identical match to the original yarn. For current substitutes if you have access to Ravelry, do a search on 100% wool yarns Aran weight that are not discontinued. Put the word single in the search box at the top of the screen and you will get the current available yarn matches. This vest is worked in two pieces. The back is knit from the bottom edge up. The front is knit in one long section like a sideways scarf with increases at each end. The edges of the vest back are self finishing and include instructions to smooth the normally used uneven stair step bind off methods. This project is a wonderful introduction to garments for the beginner, as there are no buttonholes and minimal sewing. The fit is very forgiving and will flatter many body shapes. The classic vest back gives the garment structure while the front looks like a large scarf is hanging around your neck. This creates a strong slimming vertical line on the front of the body. The front edges can be folded back into a shawl collar shape or left to stand high on your neck. The simple textured stitch pattern shows off the long run of the colourway to its best advantage, subtly blending the colour transitions.
