This is a public service annoucement I can get behind, though it may seem a little overwrought. Seriously. Don't wreck the Noro. It deserves better.
NORO SILK GARDEN, AN ORGANIC MEDIUM WORSTED OR ARAN WEIGHT 4 VARIEGATED YARN FOR KNITTING A COLORFUL HAT, SCARF, GLOVES, PULLOVER, CARDIGAN, TOP, BLANKET OR BAG Noro's Silk Garden range celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2016. This beautiful yarn has a passionate cult following and deservedly so as it has been featured in thousands of projects on multiple knitting sites and is available in dozens of fabulous colorways. "I imagined a yarn that bloomed out of a garden of silk and silk/mohair fabric," said Mr. Eisaku Noro, its creator. It is an excellent choice for knitting and crochet projects ranging from socks to sweaters to hats and is a great complement to other Silk Garden yarns of the same weight. Because it is hand-dyed, the color variations in each skein and project will be different, and there may be subtle differences between the color palette you choose and the yarn you receive. Therefore, for the best results, work two rows from one skein and two rows from another skein in order to end up with an overall blended effect (which is necessary when you use hand-dyed yarn, such as Noro's yarn ranges). All of this is so knitters can feel nature more closely when knitting with Noro yarns. Impurities in the raw materials are carefully removed by hand without the use of chemical treatment which is not good for the fibers or the environment. We also aim to reproduce the colors of nature in our yarns: leaves for example, all look green, but in reality they come in countless variations of green. By mixing colors, we can give our yarns more natural feeling colors reminiscent of oceans, mountains, flowers, trees and so on." ~ Eisaku Noro ~ All animal fibers that are used in the yarns come from certified organic farms, from international sources such as Australia, the Falkland Islands and South Africa. Noro is personally involved with inspecting all aspects of production, from visiting the animal farms to checking the machinery used and keeping restrictions on the dye processes to maintain products that are as eco-friendly as possible. Yarn Notes Yarn Specs The Brand Noro Kureyon is the original variegated, self striping yarn by Noro. Spun from 100% Wool, this yarn truly earns its cult status amongst knitters and crocheters around the world. くれよん(pronounced coo-ray-oh-n) is the Japanese pronunciation of the English “crayon;” thus, the literal name of the yarn is “crayon.” There are sooo many patterns for this amazing yarn, with over 53,000 projects uploaded to Ravelry alone! Amazingly versatile and so much fun to work with! Given as it's been around for decades, with new colours added each season, this Aran weight yarn is available in a crazy number of colourways. We've reduced the confusion and picked the best for you! For over 40 years Noro has produced the most beautiful, inimitable Organic, ecologically responsible, hand-dyed and hand-spun yarns. We encourage you to read more about Noro under "The Brand" tab above. A very, very special yarn - it's a dream come true for us to be able to stock Noro. Ingredients: 100% Organic Wool Length: 100m (116yds) Weight: 50g Gauge: Aran/Worsted "I have come to believe that these yarns are as close to art as we have in the industry. The man behind them is an artist himself, and these yarns are an expression of his spirit rather than just a commercial product." Cornelia Tuttle Hamilton The World of Nature In recent years, the yarn industry has been actively promoting awareness of ecological sustainability, but this concept has been part of the Noro philosophy from the very beginning. The preservation of nature is such an important concept of his business that Mr Noro leaves nothing to chance, personally overseeing every aspect of production from sheep to yarn ball, including all machinery, labelling, yarn bags, boxes and even the garbage that the company produces. All the animal fibres used in Noro yarns are Organic. Most of the wool comes from a special breed of sheep called Polwarth, raised especially for Noro on a non-mulesing farm in Australia. Other fibres from from the Falkland Islands and South Africa, from Organic Farms. The Production Process "Friction, rubbing and heat during processing weaken the fibres in direct proportion to the length of time they are processed. By dramatically shortening this process, we are preventing damage to the enzymes in the fibres and simultaneously profiting the environment." Mr Eisaku Noro Environmental considerations are at the forefront of the dyeing process, with each step being carefully controlled. The natural fibres are dyed using a pH balance that is compatible with the fibres. Noro's modifications to the blowing, carding and spinning processes reap a total energy savings of 46% as compared to typical yarn industry standards. The unique manufacturing process that results in the exceptional colourways and textures have always been closely guarded secret in Japan. Brand Concept Harmonise natural unevenness, asymmetric pattern and complex colour to portray the beauty of the nature. Taking sufficient time to dye yarn Tenderness of materials to preserve their original characters and deliver them into the hands of the crafter “BE FREE FROM EXISTING CONCEPTS AND LIMITATIONS” “PURSUE THE IMAGE IN OUR MINDS” Noro yarns have longer spans of colour in the runs than many other yarns, causing distinctive striping patterns, as well as being spun by hand versus being produced completely by machines. There have been plenty of attempts to imitate the magic of Noro, but in the world of self-striping yarn, nothing compares with Noro.

Philosophy behind NORO yarns: "For persons who are born or grew up in a place where unspoiled great nature is left, nature is always close to their existence. No matter if they are aware of it or not, they are inspired by it in many ways. From ancient times Japanese have accepted, enjoyed, and been charmed by the non-uniformity, unevenness, & coarseness of nature. This is the basis of the philosophy of Noro yarn. Natural fibers have great features that humans can not mimic. I want to leave these features as much as possible in my yarns. If I make wool yarn, I use various lengths and thicknesses of wool fibers to try to reproduce the nature of sheep itself in our yarn: such as unevenness and coarseness. These natural states are intentionally left by using human hands and old machinery so that natural fibers are not over processed. By mixing colors we can give our yarns more natural feeling colors reminiscent of oceans, mountains, flowers, trees and so on." ~ Eisaku Noro ~ All animal fibers that are used in the yarns come from certified organic farms, from international sources such as Australia, the Falkland Islands and South Africa. He says "Friction, rubbing and heat during processing weaken the fibers in direct proportion to the length of time they are processed. By dramatically shortening this process, we are preventing damage to the enzymes in the fibers and simultaneously profiting the environment."
