Yes this is the original by Vincent. This macro was shot aprox 1 ft away from the painting. Note the steady symetrical strokes of the artist. The colours chosen by a madman? Vincent himself was umimpressed with this painting. In a letter to Theo from Saint-Rémy he wrote: "The first four canvases are studies without the effect of a whole that the others have . . . The olives with white clouds and background of mountains, also the moonrise and the night effect, these are exaggerations from the point of view of arrangement, their lines are warped as that of old wood. ” Later in this letter, Vincent referred once more to the painting: "In all this batch I think nothing at all good save the field of wheat, the mountain, the orchard, the olives with the blue hills and the portrait and the entrance to the Quarry, and the rest says nothing to me, because it lacks individual intention and feeling in the lines. Where these lines are close and deliberate it begins to be a picture, even if it is exaggerated. That is a little what Bernard and Gauguin feel, they do not ask the correct shape of a tree at all, but they insist absolutely that one can say if the shape is round or square - and my word, they are right, exasperated as they are by certain people's photographic and empty perfection. Certainly they will not ask the correct tone of the mountains, but they will say: In the Name of God, the mountains were blue, were they? Then chuck on some blue and don't go telling me that it was a blue rather like this or that, it was blue, wasn't it? Good - make them blue and it's enough! Gauguin is sometimes like a genius when he explains this, but as for the genius Gauguin has, he is very timid about showing it, and it is touching the way he likes to say something really useful to the young. Timna Tarr comes from a long line of quilters but did not begin quilting until after studying art history in college. She bought her first longarm in 2001 and began quilting clients’ quilts shortly thereafter. Since then she has custom designed and quilted thousands of quilts. Timna’s own nationally award-winning quilts are in private and corporate collections and have been seen in numerous exhibits, quilting magazines, and books. Her work uses color and composition in a unique and playful way. Each block in a quilt is made as its own element, independent of the other blocks. After all of the blocks are constructed, she arranges the small compositions to play off each other and to work together to create a larger whole. My fifth graders are having SO much fun making these!!! For this project you will need: watercolor paper shaving cream liquid watercolor or food coloring scraper paint brush watercolor pencils -First, spread shaving cream on the table the size of your paper -Then drip the paint directly on the shaving cream where you want your cactus to go - Then drip blue and turquoise paint around the green drips for the sky -finally a few tiny drips of yellow for moon and stars, plus red or pink for the flowers Next you will use the back end of a paint brush to make tiny swirls. IT IS VERY IMPORTANT that the brush TOUCHES the table and stands STRAIGHT UP, if it leans and isn't straight up and down it will not work - Next place the paper directly on the shaving cream and tap it gently to release and air bubbles Lift the paper and use a scraper to scrape ALL the shaving cream off the paper. This is when everyone gets excited! You will hear OOOOhs and AAAAHHHHs!!! IF you miss any it will be blurry, so make sure to get it all off When you are finished with the print you can use watercolor pencils dipped in water to outline your cactus. You can also use pan watercolors to fill in the edges or add more color. Another fun material to use is Reeves water soluble oil pastels dipped in water. Clean up is always the BEST PART for this project!!!

These are so stinkin' cute, they just make me smile. They may only be 5 and 6 year olds, but they did a great job on their portraits, even capturing their personalities in them. I'm not gonna lie, when my teaching partner said she wanted to do these, I cringed. I've done them off and on with kinder, it is a difficult lesson. Much less with 30 kinder students at the end of the teaching day, not exactly the most focused part of the day for them. We started in January, took a few breaks here and there, and we recently finished them up. I have a feeling parents are going to love these!
