Recently I was looking online for inspiration for more inquiry studies; I found it, in spades, on the Learning by Inquiry site. From their list of 50 inquiry questions about history I’ve curated approximately 20, and supplemented them with 5 of my own. My initial intent was to offer them to teachers at the start of the term for a broad discussion of the topic, but this product can actually be used at any point in your course to generate discussion (and I've included a title slide for this). Your students will, in groups, categorize the questions into subtopics and then share and discuss how they arrived at their groupings. To be clear, they are NOT, at this time, expected to answer any of them – but you may want to come back to this activity at a later point, to either ‘drill down’ on a particular question, or as a culminating activity (research projects, essays) for the end of term. NOTE: Besides a list of subject-related inquiry questions, Learning by Inquiry has a wealth of other teaching ideas – I heartily recommend it!

The focus or example of this product is a dig that occurred this past summer (July 2023) in Cordova Bay, BC, a community not far up the road from where I live. Ever since I was in grade 7 I've been fascinated by the painstaking process archaeologists (and, in this case, anthropologists) use to discover evidence of long-ago cultures. This product goes into detail about the contemporary dig at a Coast Salish community's site before asking your students to investigate the 62 historical archaeological sites across Canada. Specific criteria are listed in the assignment, followed by your students expressing their views on the value of such explorations as they relate to their greater understanding of Canadian Indigenous cultures. A second, optional assignment asks them to look at the Local Area Plan (LAP) in their own community to see if, like Cordova Bay's, there is mention of local Indigenous peoples and to what extent they are included in it. Your students are given two options for writing to their local council, depending on whether or not this has happened. A copy of the chart on the Indigenous peoples' history, created by the UVIC associate professor leading the Cordova Bay dig (who also participated in a 2008 dig in the same area) is included, along with an abridged copy of the Cordova Bay LAP, so that students can see how that area's Indigenous citizens were included in its planning in order to work towards reconciliation. This product was specifically designed for the BC SS7 curriculum; if you're a non-BC teacher, there's a second title slide for you. NOTE: Although this product comes in at 29 pages, 10 of it is the chart and the abridged LAP; the price I've set is more in tune with smaller products.
