I am going to post a few more pictures of my language arts interactive notebook that I took a couple of weeks ago. I have been posting a few with each blog, but am going to post several more of them on this entry. It has been what seems like a long week, so I am going to KISS this post! That is an acronym I teach my students: Keep It Short and Simple. We KISS a lot of stuff when appropriate! This is a double bubble map we used while reading The Cay by Theodore Taylor. This is a summarization strategy I found online call "the incredible shrinking notes" where students start out writing a summary of a reading selection on the large index card. Students are then given the medium sized card and have to take the information from the large card and condense it onto the medium sized card. Finally, students are given the small card and must then take the information from the medium sized card and condense it down either further onto the small card. This is a great way for students to get to the main point/idea of a selection. This is a brief biography of Theodore Taylor we glued in our notebooks when we were reading The Cay, one of his awesome books that can be integrated into either the study of South America or Central America or World War II. It also has great examples of dialect. This is a foldable on poetry terms. Notes on figurative language with some color coding to make the notes user friendly. Poetry notes also color coded to make them easier to use and more helpful. More poetry notes...notice an example is created with each type of poem so students have a reference point to refer to when needed. Once I teach poetry, it is fair game to require students to respond to any type of reading in poetry form. I teach poetry between Thanksgiving and Christmas each year, which gives students an opportunity to use their poetry skills for the whole second semester. Another page of poetry notes. Our last page of poetry notes. Note the "I Am" poem rules taped into student notebooks and then our class example written underneath. We used "Winter Morning Poem" and a sheet of generic poetry analysis questions to aid in comprehension. The questions are taped into the notebook so when students open them, they can see both poem and questions/answers together. This is just another poem where we were marking the rhyme scheme, lines, and stanzas.
Happy Tuesday Peeps!! I have another card I made using the Sweet Sunday Sketch challenge. I used the Stamp Set Serene Silhouettes from Stampin Up. I decided to go monochromatic with this one. The base of the card is Crumb Cake card stock and then a layer of Very Vanilla. The DSP on here is from the Comfort Cafe paper pack. The sentiment is from the Hostess set Express Yourself. I used the Fancy Fab EF on the strip and added some basic pearls and a vanilla button with a twine bow. Thanks for stopping by today! Vicki

This lovely stamp set is called Bordering on romance and it coordinates beautifully with a new die cutting product, drum roll for the EDGELITS please!!!! These are wafer thin dies that enable you to cut decorative edges in a snap. And if that wasn’t enough in turn the edgelits coordinate seamlessly with the Adorning Accents embossing folders so you can add further interest with deeply embossed borders, oh boy these products have already changed my world, I cannot wait for you to start using them and see what you think , I just hope you won't get sick of me using them all the time. In the previous post, I talked about using voice cards as visual aids. In this post, I will explain a couple activities that use the visual aids. At the bottom of the post, you can download the pdf and print them for free! Name Game For 1st grade and kindergarten, I always review voices on their first music class of the year when we are doing name games. We do simple echos: Teacher: "My name is Mrs. Dennis" Class: "Her name is Mrs. Dennis" Student: "My name is Joshua." Class: "His name is Joshua." thekinderkid.blogspot.com After we go once around the circle learning names, I introduce the voices with the cards. (I also tie this to our school-wide voice level system. I do not have a picture of our voice level posters, but I found a similar one from The Kinder Kid. Our numbers and levels are the same, but we don't have the cute clipart.) When the students understand the voice levels, we get to go around the circle again saying our name to the beat, but this time each student secretly picks a voice (whisper, speaking, calling, singing). We must echo using the same voice and then I ask the class what type of voice they used. Voice level zero For the past 3 years, since I have been relating these voices to the voice level number, the kids always ask to say their names with voice level zero. We now call it "Magic Lips". Anytime I want the kids to move their lips without making a sound, I ask them to use Magic Lips. I actually use this with all grade levels. I usually ask for Magic Lips when I had the kids patting a rhythm while saying a poem and then I want to hear their patting by itself. I also ask for Magic Lips when students are using Curwen hand signs and I want them to stop singing and focus on the pitch levels. Acka Backa I use the voice cards often in repetitive games, just to break up the monotony. One example is an elimination game: "Acka Backa." Here is the poem if you are not familiar with it: Acka Backa, soda cracker Acka Backa, boo Acka Backa, soda cracker Out goes you! There are many variations to the words; you may know a different version, but this is how we play. This is a simple elimination game. To prepare the students, I have them stand in a circle and pass a ball around to the steady beat. We first practice passing to the beat at different tempos. I usually hold a buffalo drum and stand inside the circle showing where the ball should be. If the ball passes up the drum, they know they are going too fast. When they are focused on the beat, we introduce the poem and the rules. The last person to hold the ball on "you" leaves the circle. The student gets to go to my chair where I have the voice cards laying face down. They pick a card to tell us which voice to use next and then they get to mix them up again for the next person. Elimination games are always tough for the kids who always want to win, but going to select a card seems to ease the disappointment that they are out of the game. Free Printable: Voice Cards (whisper, speaking, calling, singing) I suggest printing them on white cardstock and laminating them.

I saw this sketch at Freshly Made Sketches and as it is one of my all time favourite layouts, I decided to make a couple of cards using it. Both cards use a flower stamp from Katzelkraft, which I must admit to having had for quite some time without it ever being inked. Now that I have seen it stamped I shall probably be using it a whole lot more. The first also has a little text from SU French Foliage overstamped, together with a little Gorgeous Grunge stamp too. The edges of the card pieces have been gently distressed using a file. I had looked at the challenge from Dynamic Duos this week and found myself subconsciously using the colours suggested for this week's Challenge. Keep it Simple request the use of text this week, it's for that too! This second one uses the same sketch, but also incorporates the technique demonstrated by Mynette at Technique Time Tuesday. The image is stamped onto three separate pieces of card, placed on top of each other gradually decreasing in size, which are then taken apart mounted and put back together again! It's quite fun! I was cased by Shana!!
Seven sashes. Six are variations on the Celtic knot pattern. One is a 2 color twist that I made up.
A few years ago, our school implemented "voice levels" as a way to help at assemblies, in hallways, and within our classrooms. This has really helped with consistency across the grade levels and made the first few weeks of school even easier when introducing these concepts. In our school, if a teacher needs to get students' attention, he/she will hold up our hand in the shape of a zero. If kids are working in small groups and are getting a little noisy, I would hold up two fingers to remind them it was "Voice Level 2". When we create presentation rubrics, we always include "Voice Level 3" as an area to focus on. In the beginning of the year, when we are making our Daily 5 Anchor Charts around expectations, Voice Levels 0, 1, and 2 always make an appearance. I have loved thinking of Voice Level 1 (whisper) as "Spy Talk"! In the past, I have used the fingers-on-the-voicebox trick~ if it vibrates, it's not Voice Level 1~ but the idea of talking like a spy is soooooo much more fun! This year, I ask my Teacher's Assistant to help be my Voice Level Monitor. If they feel it is getting too noisy, they will assist me in showing the appropriate voice level with our finger(s). Here is the file for the poster (I recently changed over my font, so it looks slightly different). **UPDATE: If you like this idea, you will love my new Voice Levels Management Pack available on TpT! Be sure to download the Preview to see everything that's included and read my updated post HERE for more info! Enjoy!
