Our new core vocabulary word is ON. We have found this to be a very functional vocabulary word to target. Here is a handout that gives more ideas on how this word can be used naturally and a home activity. Both of these will be sent home with your student. I also wanted to share a fun song that our kids have enjoyed that targets the core word - ON.

As the school year is winding down and you are thinking about all of the new things to include in your daily routine next year keep reading!!! The Expanding Expression Tool is an AMAZING resource that has helped my students become not only better writers but better communicators too. The Expanding Expression Tool or EET is used as a multi-sensory approach to improve oral and written language. Okay...so what does it look like and how does it work? Let's check it out..... What it looks like?: How does it work?: Each part of the EET serves a purpose. Check out the chart below to see what each color stands for. How can you use this to improve oral and/or written language? 1st- Select an item 2nd- have a student describe it 3rd- introduce EET 4th- have the student describe the item again and be amazed!! Example: You show the student penguin. They may say it's an animal that lives in the cold. After introducing EET the student will be able to share a lot more about the penguin. They will be able to tell you..... green/group: Animal blue/do: swim, walk/waddle, eat, lay eggs what does it look like?: black and white what is it made of?: comes from an egg pink/parts: flippers, bill, feathers, neck, eyes, webbed feet, claws white/where: Antarctica, zoo what else do you know?: males sit on eggs, mates for life, waddle and swim As the students get used to this their overall oral and written language will improve tremendously. You can use this tool in a variety of ways including, direct instruction, para led station, writing center, homework and more!! After my students were comfortable with EET, I set up an EET station in my classroom in lieu of my traditional writing center. You can even differentiate within EET. You may have some students who are just working on stating 1 word answers, but you can also have students practice responding in full sentences. Student 1 Example: Green/Group: animal Student 2 Example: Green/Group: The penguin belongs to the animal group. Overall, EET has been an amazing tool for my students and a wonderful additional to my classroom. We use this resource but you can also check out Teachers Pay Teachers for more. Or you can check out the original kit here! I hope you are able to implement EET into your day next year!! Follow my blog with Bloglovin

Today I’m starting a brand new series right here on the blog…because…I think we could ALL benefit. It’s all about the area of reading comprehension and, as educators, we are often really good at providing lots of practice in this area, but, in honesty, it’s a really difficult area to teach. As an SLP, how often have you heard this?: “I saw XYZ new device and I think it would be great for my student,” or “Last night I saw XYZ device on tv and it was a miracle!” High tech AAC devices are
Do you ever have a time where you find an old activity you forgot about?? I found one this week that I love...and it is available for free here at abcteach.com. They are rebus stories that have pictures incorporated into the stories. My early readers love these, because they feel like they are actually reading! The picture supports not only help them understand, but also encourage them to be independent readers. These particular stories are also great, because they have easy worksheets that correspond to the story. The kids practice answering yes/no questions, matching words to pictures, filling in the blanks of sentences, etc. Below, is a sample worksheet that goes with the story, "I Like Summer." There are 10 different stories available for free at abcteach.com, so definitely check them out! These have been great to photocopy and use with my kiddos as we wind down the last month of school...a nice change in pace! Have you stumbled across any old activities or ideas lately worth sharing?

I am so excited to share this new activity with all of you! I just finished the first installment in my Articulation BINGO series targeting /k/ and /g/ in all word positions While I LOVE adorable clip art, some of my clients are often distracted by it. Articulation BINGO is a simple set of cards (just clip art picture and word) and addresses multiple words per position per sound. This activity includes: Contents: • 35 picture cards each for initial /k/ (pages 3-8) and initial /g/ (pages 37-42) • 35 picture cards each for medial /k/ (pages 13-18) and medial /g/ (pages 47-52) • 35 picture cards for final /k/ (pages 23-28) and 29 for final /g/ (pages 57-61) • 4 different picture bingo boards per word position per sound (24 total) (/k/ pages 9-12, 19-22, 29-32) and /g/ pages 43-46, 53-56, 62-65) • 4 different picture bingo boards with all word positions represented per sound (12 total) (pages 33-36 and pages 66-69) **Cards can be used for traditional articulation drill and practice or to play one of the following game options. • Bingo: Distribute bingo board to each student. Have students take turns drawing picture card and naming items with target sound. First student to get bingo (across, down, or horizontally) or cover entire board is winner. • Memory: Print two sets of picture cards and have students name items with target sound while matching picture pairs. • Go Fish: Print two sets of picture cards and have students use repeated sentence framework to request desired picture with target sound. As I mentioned above, there will be additional Articulation BINGO sets on the horizon! Stay tuned for the next installment and thank you for all of your continued support of Straight Up Speech! Get your copy of Articulation Bingo for /k/ and /g/ in my TPT store by clicking here Jenn

To help you with this monumental task, here is a small December present to all of you speech people out there. It's Opposites Bingo!!! Easy game---kids each have a Bingo card. The calling cards have an opposite word, and tokens are then placed on the players' cards when named. There are other opposite Bingo games out there in internet land, but if you want mine, here it is! Merry Christmas! Click here to download Opposites Bingo in Boardmaker Click here to download Opposites Bingo in pdf. For the pdf version, I converted these to Smarty Symbols (I paid for a commercial license). You can download this version here, along with an interactive book. There is a small fee since there was a cost to me. Some of you may remember that my daughter is in the Peace Corps in Indonesia. She's enjoying a vacation there on the island of Flores. The pictures are stunning. .
