Remember how I cut out and started an 18th century manโs jacket? Well, I did, and it worked, and then I lost the sleeves, but I canโt for the life of me remember what I used as a pattern! So when I re-started a 1770s mans ensemble to go with the Lady Anne Darcy dress, I really had to re-start, and find a whole new pattern. This time I used the 1765-1790 manโs suit pattern from Colonial Williamsburgโs Costume Close-Up: Clothing Construction and Pattern. Itโs based on this suit: The pattern is relatively simple: a front and back piece, two piece sleeves, cuffs, collar, pocket flaps, and some interfacing and padding. I found the interfacing and padding diagram particularly useful. I used an old linen with a bit of staining for my interfacing, and a bit of flannel for the padding in the chest. In the 1730s, back-lacing stays with a front-laced stomacher became popular. ย These simple, commoner stays are constructed similarly to the Colonial Williamsburg Collection stays. By the third quarter of the 18th century, stay makers realised that it wasnโt the number of panels that were making the shape but the orientation of the bones. ย By the 1780s, the style of dress had evolved from the conical top and bottom created by stays and hoops to the โpouter pidgeonโ look with the chest thrust forward and the hips back. ย The front portion of the look was made by scoop-front stays. ย By the 1790s, the front of the silhouette was still forward in that pouter pidgeon fashion, but the back sat at the level of the floating ribs.
