I recently spent a super quick 24 hours staying with Hayley in Winchester, but a lot of that was chilling at hers, taking blog photos and having a proper old school girlie sleepover with Laura and Kariss! We did, however, spend a good few hours taking in the sights of Winchester, so here are the places I would visit to spend 8 hours there when I head there again! The Black Boy Pub, Wharf Hill This is by far, the best pub I have ever been to decor wise. If I owned a pub, I feel like it would be filled with taxidermy, homewares and all the books I own which is exactly what The Black Boy is. There are a few open fires which we so welcoming on the cold, drizzly day we visited on and plenty of rooms to make yourself at home in. The bar menu is mainly focused on locally sourced ales which is 100% ok with me as I’m for trying new drinks whilst supporting the local area. But for me, the winning points were won by the signs outside; one stating no children after 8pm and another saying dogs always welcome, that’s totally my kinda place! […]

**Historic Gravestone Graphics From 18th Century New England** Long has been the tradition of making rubbings from carvings in England and America. It was a way to keep something of the person who passed or simply preserve the beauty of a carving. A piece of paper is placed over the image and charcoal was gently rubbed across the surface to make an image. The march of time has destroyed many old carvings but some of the artwork has been preserved in rubbings. This set of 155 individual transparent PNG images is rich in history and has been carefully curated and inspired from my family's personal collection of rubbed images most of them were done in the middle of the 20th century. Some of the graves have since been destroyed by time and others are not available any more for rubbings as they are in bad condition so this is a special collection! It took me quite a bit of time to compile them all. Most of the images are from New England gravestone carvings but there are a few from the Carolinas. The icons are wonderfully quirky folk art and some are quite beautiful. The images are inspired by the passage of time and remind us to do the best we have with what we have left. You will find: - hourglasses - willow trees - the tree of knowledge - urns - angels - skulls - skull and crossbones - skeletons - flowers - floral decoration - carved borders - columns - some celestial images and more **This set contains 155 transparent individiaul PNG files 3500 by 3500 pixels, 300 DPI, distressed in ways you would imagine stone rubbings would be distressed, you can see them in detail in the sample images I've provided. You will also get 5 bonus metallic stamped images and a few pattern tiles and decorated papers.** p.s. the font I used in the samples is called Arber Free Vintage Font
"They called me mad, and I called them mad, and damn them, they outvoted me." ~ Nathaniel Lee In his April 28th blog for the New York Times, the excellent Timothy Egan wrote about "Desert Derangement Syndrome," his take on the state of things in the state of Arizona. At one point he describes members of the "birther" movement as "flat-earthers." When a friend mentioned she wasn't familiar with the term, I began wondering what the Flat Earth Society has been up to; clearly, its once-powerful publicity machine has broken down. The idea that the earth is flat was widely believed until about the 400 B.C., when Aristotle among others proposed that our planet is actually a globe. The fact that Christopher Columbus and then Magellan failed to fall off the earth's edge removed the remaining doubt for most people. The discoid earth notion was revived in the 1800s by British Inventor Samuel Rowbotham, whose interpretations of Biblical passages convinced him that, despite all evidence to the contrary, the Earth really is flat after all. He wrote a book about it, Zetetic Astronomy: Earth Not a Globe, and attracted a group of ardent followers who formed the Universal Zetetic Society, precursor to the Flat Earth Society. (Are you getting a headache yet?) The image at right is an artist's interpretation of the Society's belief that the earth is a disk and that Antarctica forms an ice wall around its outer limits. In 1956 — yes, that recently — Samuel Shenton, whom Wikipedia describes as a Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society and the Royal Geographic Society, must have left his peers speechless when he took up Rowbotham's cause and formed the modern-day Flat Earth Society. One might have imagined that space flight, particularly NASA's unforgettable photos of "the big blue marble," would have ended the debate, but this is not the way things work with science deniers. Space flight just gave conspiracy theorists and fellow loonies more fuel. Flat Earth Society members have been among the leading proponents of the notion that the Apollo 13 moon landing in 1969 was staged with the help of Stanley Kubrick. According to Wikipedia, the Flat Earth Society claimed 60 members as of March 2010. I'm sure there would be more, but likely candidates are no doubt too busy obsessing about President Obama's birth certificate and denying climate change. Meanwhile in the loony-loving state of Alaska, an alternate Flat Earth Society has sprung up. I like to think a polar bear with a laptop and a sense of humor is behind it. Please take a moment to enjoy its wonderfully absurd mission statement and an interesting page of "evidence." "There are some people who live in a dream world, and there are some who face reality; and then there are those who turn one into the other." ~ Douglas H. Everett

Jacobean embroidery refers to embroidery styles that flourished in the reign of King James I of England in first quarter of the 17th century. The term is usually used today to describe a form of crewel embroidery used for furnishing characterized by fanciful plant and animal shapes worked in a variety of stitches with two-ply wool yarn on linen. Popular motifs in Jacobean embroidery, especially curtains for bed hangings, are the Tree of Life and stylized forests, usually rendered as exotic plants arising from a landscape or terra firma with birds, stags, squirrels, and other familiar animals. If you want to explore more of the UK, here are 9 underrated cities in Britain that are worth visiting. Whatever you love, there's a place for you.
York is a city located north of London, England. It has a rich and diverse history full of important British landmarks, and it once played a significant role in the United Kingdom. While a day trip to York is possible, I would recommend spending at least 2 days in York (like with other cities in the UK, such as Oxford and Cambridge as there are many fun and free things to do in York city. The train from London to York takes about 2-4 hours each way. The time there and back is dependent on a few things: what time of day and day of the week it is, any disruptions to train services, the number of train connections, and whether you're taking a fast or slow train. So, make sure you read through my tips below before booking any travel! There are hotels situated in and around York's City Walls that are suitable for all budget types. For example, we stayed at the B+B York, which is about a 15-minute walk from the city centre. I would highly recommend this accommodation for couples or budget-conscious individuals travelling outside of busy or peak holiday times as it is a quiet and clean place to stay. The staff are also super friendly and helpful! Breakfast is available for purchase (if not included in your booking), but we opted to have breakfast out each morning. I have included my favourite breakfast spots and coffee shops below. We did not purchase the York Pass because many of the York activities we did were free, so the pass wouldn't have saved us any money. You should, however, do your research beforehand to see if the pass would be beneficial for you as it highly depends on the sites you are going to visit. Now that I've gotten all the important tidbits out of the way, continue reading this York itinerary to learn the best way to see York in two days.
Not particularly known for my spontaneity, I decided to suppress my urge of being comfortable and book a last minute holiday (aka: vacation) to Edinburgh, Scotland. Why? To be completely honest, I have no damn idea. Maybe it was because Portugal felt too far for a weekend trip. Maybe it was because

Royal Delft magnets are made with a transfer technique. DETAILS- Craftsmanship: Handmade & decorated with a transfer designed by a Royal Delft master painter.- Size: 3"× 2" × 0.4"- Color: Delft Blue- Handmade in Netherlands- From the Nijntje (Miffy) collection About Royal Delft's CraftmanshipRoyal Delft has been creating high-quality Delft Blue since 1653. The craft of painting is at the core of the company, although other decoration techniques have been developed over the years to create high-end earthenware. Carry on reading to discover the two different techniques that Royal Delft uses to this very day to make unique blue and white objects. Transfer TechniqueThe decoration on these products is applied by using a transfer technique that was developed in England in the 18th century. In those days an engraved copper sheet with wet ink was pressed on tissue paper and afterwards the tissue paper was pressed on a ceramic surface. Finally, the ceramics were fired at a low temperature and the decoration appeared on the product. Nowadays the transfer is made with a screen print.

When I drew Suffolk I realised in horror that it's the only county in England that I've never visited. Well we're going to have to put that right soon! As I've got to know Suffolk through my artwork I've come to see what a beautiful pocket of the world it is. I love the medieval buildings with their wooden beams and red tiles or thatched roofs as at the lovely Lavenham. There are castles (Framingham) and cathedrals (Bury St Edmunds) that mark their presence on this relatively flat land, but it's the windmills, lighthouses and piers that give Suffolk its unique charm and character. The beautiful seaside towns of Aldeburgh and Southwold look lovely with their lighthouses and pretty little cottages. Suffolk isn't all sweetness and light however and I like to include oddities and uncomfortably ugly architecture too, such as the Sizewell nuclear plant and port at Felixstowe. But Suffolk is overwhelmingly a place of understated beauty and one that I am keen to not let escape me for much longer. P.S. I went for a long weekend in Suffolk in September 2020 and loved it! :-) Julia's vision of Suffolk makes a cute and collectable greeting card and is also available as a beautiful Art Print for your home.
