In the U.S. Navy, the Command Ashore insignia is a gold metal, three-pronged trident device with a trident centered on an elliptically shaped laurel wreath. The badge is a breast insignia that recognizes the responsibilities and importance of command ashore and major program management. Officers below flag rank (captain and below) who have, or had, command of an installation or commissioned unit ashore or served as a project manager wear the Command Ashore/Project Manager insignia. It is one of two badges known as Command Insignia; the other being the Command at Sea insignia. Officers wear this insignia in the same manner as that prescribed for the Command at Sea insignia.

Olaudah Equiano Tea Towel Kidnapped from a village in what is now Nigeria, Olaudah Equiano was sold into slavery in Virginia at 11 years old. After spending eight years travelling the world enslaved by a British Royal Navy officer, he eventually bought his own freedom in 1766 for £40 – almost a year’s salary for a teacher. Equiano then worked as an explorer and merchant for 20 years before settling in England, where he supported other people who had gained their freedom. With encouragement from other abolitionists, Olaudah published his memoirs in 1789, entitled The Interesting Narrative of the Life of Olaudah Equiano. This book – one of the first in Europe by a Black African writer – was an instant success, selling out immediately. It is now considered one of the best non fiction novels in the English language (Guardian 2017) Through the wealth and platform he gained, Olaudah campaigned as an abolitionist, utilising his voice to help bring an end to slavery. His ability to relate first-hand the horrors of slavery helped sway public opinion, and by 1807 Britain had formally abolished the trade. This 100 page booklet was issued to RAF (and other?) Officers posted overseas from the end of 1942. Both my father and Mrs B's mother were in the airforce so we can't remember whose this was. The artwork on the cover is rather special but I've not been able to find anything about it yet save that it was printed separately from the rest of the booklet by a firm called Fosh and Cross Ltd of London who also worked extensively with HMSO and London Transport amongst others. After a general preamble about putting one's affairs in order and the need to bear the expected hardships of wartime travel with equanimity the booklet is divided country by country with a thumbnail sketch of national characteristics and an anglo-centric view of national history. Most countries attract advice about the necessity of keeping one's bowels open , not forming romantic attachments with the locals and only drinking after sundown. Thus :- Canada: Canadians have made their country their own --- what they possess is theirs in their own right---people talk to each other without formal introduction---French Canadians sometimes regard themselves as being the original owners of the country----you will clean your own shoes---meals are on the generous side---cafeterias are restaurants where you serve yourself----dress as they dress which is generally with light underclothing and a thick over coat United States : The good visitor will move slowly and tactfully---the resources of the country are being poured freely into the struggle---no finer hospitality will be found anywhere---every yard of the land had to be fought for against the active enmity of the Redskins---America is a swift crucible and represents one of the greatest migratory experiences since the Aryan Migrations---they have a genius for the mass production of quality products---their knowledge does not necessarily imply cosmopolitanism---if you are a grouch the worst place in the world to have a grouch is America. Kenya :Geography has a profound effect on life---special precautions are still necessary for the preservation of health---most of the amenities of social life are readily available--- high altitude may lead to excitability and sometimes to frayed tempers---avoid stimulants until after sundown---the whites are not numerous but are widespread---avoid old native huts---avoid bathing in doubtful water---in all flying a shotgun is standard equipment---avoid fraternisation with the natives---these marriages are rarely successful----your commanding officer will help you to a clear understanding- senior officers should join both Niarobi clubs Gibraltar : life is not uncomfortable---the language is corrupt Spanish---freshwater baths are rare---some baths can only be filled by ladling from the hand basin---laundry charges are high---RAF officers have access to social and sports clubs and arrangements have been made for other ranks---there are some cinemas but films are on the ancient side- bars close at 21.00 hours and everyone must be off the streets by 23.00 Malta : few claims to beauty but by no means a bad place to live---the language is strange and hard to learn---the social code has a foundation different from ours---the difficulty of social intercourse is not eased by the divergence of manners and convention---class for class the British are richer than the Maltese---avoid any abruptness or offhandedness---the Maltese prefer indirect action and speech - the more senior the officer the greater the need to observe these formal courtesies---there is a fairly strong nationalist feeling- in not a few cases mixed marriages have been unhappy or unsuccessful----the Maltese are not necessarily happy out of their own environment---care should be taken to avoid chills after sunset---avoid goats milk----sport can be enjoyed subject to the necessary limitations of war. The Western Desert : there is little fresh water---topees are not worn so much near the coast---most personnel will be living under campaign conditions and outfit and equipment will be under the control of officers. Egypt : winter in Egypt is healthy but during the period of hostilities on the fortunate will be able to enjoy winter there----Cairo itself is not so healthy for invalids---Nile water has a slightly aperient effect on some people who consequently find it necessary to take a little brandy with it---flies are a plague---tipping is a habit, give little because the recipient will not be satisfied anyway---keep the kidneys warm and well protected against chill---never bathe in canal or river water---make it normal practice to keep the bowels open---avoid alcohol until the sun goes down---we might call the (locals) aquisitions pilfering but their outlook is not the same---the labourer is especially loyal to his European master---the town Arabs are a mixed crowd- it is unwise to judge by appearances----the Egyptian yields to no one in patriotism---we undoubtedly have a number of critics here---the Muhammedan is a fighter and derives inspiration from his faith---seclusion on women is enforced---never lie naked on your bed---there are packets of people who want to make trouble but they are not always sure why---not every man in Egypt is an Egyptian, the cafes and hotels are by no means innocent of people there to collect information----watch the amusement question with care---the women are jealously guarded---some but not all not so guarded may have lost standing---when women loose standing they can degenerate into extremely careless representatives of the people as a whole----in many of the ports women are exploited for amusement. Sudan :the greater monuments of the country are worth considering if the exigencies of the service permit----(As) Nubia begins the colour of the natives deepens----it is an unhealthy climate---Port Sudan is a modern port with many amenities and some inconveniences---there are many worse places---big and small game are plentiful---many of the tribes have strange and uncomfortable customs---the British are known for their justice---a good country to add to ones list. Palestine : a country of differences---it contains large problems---the british mandate following the brilliant campaign of 1917 saw the end of the Turkish period---revival of the 'national home' for the Jewish people---a considerable body of antagonistic Arabs---not the place to enter into a discussion of religions---time may bring about a quieter period---the Arabs and the Jews have absorbed many ideas some leading to a certain violence of expression---lions are now scarce---stout underwear and overcoats---drink no defiled water---take no chances with dogs---the Muhammedan calendar will be a little perplexing. Trans-Jordan : The boundary with Iraq is not defined---la rough and poor country---inhabited by uncultured ,hard pressed people----life in the open will be under campaigning conditions and will call for adaptability and resource. Iraq : The boundaries lack definition---it is divided into two sects the Sunni and the Shi'ah---the climate is not excessively burdensome but the summer is trying---Europeans find it debilitating---cholera and dysentery are dangers----cotton is an important crop---rich agricultural lands are to be developed---oil is there---there is a strong nationalist movement but its manifestations are complex----religious fanaticism is never far from the surface----a strong feeling in favour of the British cannot now be taken for granted---instinctively good bargainers---quick to take advantage of any wavering. Persia or Iran :the gateway to Russia---access to India---Russia is our ally---Persia is not easy to access were determined forces to hold the mountains---many natural resources chief of which is oil---a thinly disguised bid for German control failed---the people are independent, nationalistic and resilient---it would be a grave error to consider the people of Persia as ineffective---Tehran is a metropolis, very cosmopolitan and full of interest---don't judge the whole country by that example---the men wear European dress through out the country---unauthorised use of traditional dress is the source of disturbance---women have been emancipated---they are to be found in every industry including aviation---nationalism is receiving more attention than formalised religion---the downfall of the former regime has increased Britain's responsibility---a realistic but considerate outlook will probably serve best.
