Wees niemand iets schuldig dan elkaar lief te hebben; want wie de ander liefheeft, heeft de wet vervuld. Romeinen 13:8
You've all heard of artists who make studies and sketches in the field and then retreat to the studio to use them as the basis for a proper painting. Having just spent 2 1/2 hours painting the figure from life, I hope you saved at least one of the sketches you made. It can serve as the inspiration for a more refined version of the pose. First, put away the timer. You can take all the time you need, making sure you're pleased with the proportions, the colors, and the values. You can introduce more soft edges, or fewer, as the case may be. You can try out some surprising colors, either in another study or directly on the new painting. By all means use good paper for this project, and remember, it is not imperative that you get the drawing exactly right on the first layer. there will be later opportunities to adjust and improve the shapes. Here are some colorful paintings gathered from the web to give you some ideas. I'm not suggesting that you copy any of these. Use your work from Wednesday for the pose, and the images here as encouragement to take some risks. Have fun

Photographer Mike Hettwer has been kind enough to share with us some of his photographs depicting what remains of the Green Sahara. About 9,000 years ago, a very wet climate prevailed in parts of the Sahara Desert called the Neolithic Subpluvial period. Lasting several thousand years, this Green Sahara was home to many grassland and woodland animals as well as humans. While on an expedition for dinosaur fossils with paleontologist Paul Sereno in Niger in 2000, Hettwer discovered a burial area containing hundreds of skeletons from two distinct cultures, each thousands of years old - the Kiffian and Tenerian. Also found in the dry and desolate site were hunting tools, pottery, and bones of large land animals and fish. Mike Hettwer's photographs have appeared in 2,500 magazines, newspapers books and web sites - many of these photos are from his article "Lost Tribes of the Green Sahara" in the Sep. 2008 issue of National Geographic.

Big Tree Trail (Meares Island Tribal Park) The Big Tree Trail at Wanachus-Hilthuuis (Meares Island) Tribal Park is the Tla-o-qui-aht First Nation’s flagship visitor experience. While it is situated across Tofino Harbour, walking this trail is a total immersion into nature and cultural history. The trail was originally built by Tofino artist Adrian Dorst and his friends in 1984, as the Tla-o-qui-aht, together with environmental organizations, were successful in protesting MacMillan Bloedel’s intent to log Meares Island. Today, it is under the stewardship of the Tla-o-qui-aht Tribal Parks Guardians. Along the trail, you’ll find Western Redcedar trees as old as 1,500 years. Distance: 3 kilometres, round-trip Some highlights and info: The Hanging Garden Tree, with a circumference of 18.3 metres, was once considered the largest tree of its kind in Canada. The journey to Meares Island itself is a highlight, whether by motor boat or kayak from several Tofino guides. The wooden boardwalk on this trail is made of hand-split planks and can be uneven in some spots, and slippery in wet weather.
