Since 2005, artist Lori Nix and partner Kathleen Gerber have been producing dioramas that depict post-apocalyptic environments, everyday scenes that give the audience a glimpse of their world once nature has been left to take over. Nearly everything within the scenes is fabricated by the two under the name Nix+Gerber, with each scene taking approximately seven months from start to the final photograph. This means that the two take approximately two photographs a year, spending the bulk of their practice on miniature reproduction. More

As part of her ongoing series titled Traveling Landscapes, New York-based artist Kathleen Vance constructs entire landscapes inside of old steamer trunks and repurposed luggage. Many of the pieces incorporate real running water, soil, and living plant life to form encapsulated environments, though others are constructed from common model-making materials and resin. The pieces are intended to speak to the fragility of drinking water reservoirs and issues of water rights. She shares in her artist statement: Materials that are commonly defined as natural and artificial are combined in the creation of these works, isolating aspects that are indicative of the ‘natural’ (while sometimes are considered unnatural). In Daniel Shipp's series Botanical Inquiry, the Sydney-based photographer explores how plants and flowers found at the edges of urban infrastructure fit into our modern world. Shipp collects seemingly unremarkable plants and photographs the subjects in built dioramas, an environment that allows him to manipulate the relationship between foreground and background with a controlled precision. Through this process he is able to create dramatic photographs in-camera, shooting digitally but using old visual effects techniques developed for early cinema. More

Satoshi Araki and his extraordinary miniature dioramas make the rounds on the internet very few months. His latest and greatest creation showcases the latest Batmobile in its natural environment: a foggy, seedy, thrash-strewn street corner.

If you've visited my blog before you may have noticed I have a new design! I first ventured into sharing teaching ideas in Cyberland by creating an early childhood class website. Then, I discovered a ton of inspiring teachers' blogs and thought, "I can do that, too!" And, The Third Grade Learning Spot came to be. Through a lot of trial and error I created my own blog, but the finished product wasn't what I had envisioned in my head. No matter how many tutorials I watched I just couldn't get rid of the seam in my background. Plus, I wanted all the cool, cute features other blogs had. Then, I discovered the site, I Teach. What's Your Super Power? , created by Megan Favre. I learned not only is Megan a teacher and mommy, but she's a blog designer and creator of A Bird in Hand Designs. At first, I felt hesitant contacting Megan to redesign my blog. I was still getting the hang of blogging and with my Type A, OCD, perfectionist personality it was hard handing the reins over to another. However, Megan made the process not only pain free, but FUN. Megan was consistently prompt in answers any questions and even developed my new design quicker than anticipated. She came up with a bunch of creative options for me to pick from by simply using a color palette and some fav fonts I sent her. So, if you're thinking of creating or re-designing a blog, I highly recommend Megan! Even though there's only 2 weeks of school left, The Third Grade Learning Spot has been busy, busy, busy. I was amazed at the animal habitat reports and dioramas the kiddos created. Here's a sample ... We also joined the rest of the school creating a garden habitat in the Home Depot garden beds on the playground. Seedlings we planted included pumpkins, strawberries, corn, tomatoes, and petunias. The kiddos will get to see how big their plants grew during the summer on the 1st day of the new school year. future cornstalk... Happy learning!

Get your students excited about science with this hands on unit about habitats! This unit includes full lesson plans and student task cards (with visual supports). It is designed to be used as a 2 week long, centers and project based exploration unit, but can also be used as whole class lessons. Week 1: Monday: Build schema and introduce habitats by completing a habitat book. Tuesday through Thursday: Students go to various science centers to explore different habitats. Students learn about oceans, deserts, savannas, polar regions, forests, and rain forests. Directions, suggestions, and student information cards are included for each station. (Data sheets and/or student books are included with each center.) Friday: Wrap up the week by sorting animals into their natural habitats. Week 2: Students create a habitat diorama or mural and show off their creations with a gallery walk. At the end of the week, students draw an animal out of a hat and decide if their animal could or could not survive in the habitat they created. Students must defend their answers. Centers/activities can also be spread out throughout the week if needed. For more information, please check out the preview button above. Find more seriously awesome STEAM units here.
