A couple of weeks ago I got to make another really cool cake, it's my second Hungry Caterpillar cake and it was the most fun to do. The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle was one of my favourite books as a child, so I was more than happy to make this one for friends little boys 1st Birthday. As well as the cake I made some matching caterpillar cookies, their faces crack me up, I dont know if they're hungry or surprised. Happy first birthday Samuel!
Two of my boys' birthdays are just a month apart, with Christmas in between. While they're young (or until they start protesting) we are doing the combo birthday thing. They are turning 2 and 3 this year.....so I'm pretty sure they don't mind. They are both in love with Thomas the train and I didn't have time to do a large Thomas the tank engine cake with fondant and all of the works, so we opted for a simple but adorable cupcake train. We jazzed it up with a cheap "grass colored" tablecloth and laid "track" down using black electrical tape. I bought a blue tablecloth and cut out a lake, just for fun. My platform cars were made with marshmallow wheels, a toothpick in between to hold them together. Two sets of wheels glued to a graham cracker with frosting. For best results, let dry overnight. (Not pictured: I glued on Oreos to the marshmallows to make the wheels more prominent. You could just leave the Oreos off and just stick with the marshmallows too) I bought those silicone cupcake liners and I loved them. You could do regular round cupcakes too. Line them all up, and there you go! The boys loved it. The Thomas engine is a bath toy and I got the "Happy Birthday" candles at Walmart. This whole thing took about 2 hours to put together and had just as much wow factor as a 3D Thomas cake (which would have taken me at least 2 days). Happy Birthday A and T!
First of all, my baby is one- ahhh goes to cry in a corner (lol) but on a serious note, her party was everything I imagined it to be and more. I’ve had a lot of questions about decor, so here I am to answer those! I’ll also be including links. I unfortunately cannot link everything so I apologize for that. Some stores just don’t participate in affiliate linking. Some popular questions I’ve been getting: • what did you use as the back drop? These are just regular linen curtains (extra long) that I purchased for our bedroom months ago. I ran a string through them and then used command strips to hang them on the walll. • did you do all of the decorating yourself? Yes, I purchased all decor + used some things I already had + did A LOT of DIY + had the help of a good friend of mine the day of to get it all set up. • Where are your cakes from and what did you ask for? Sawyer’s smash cake, main cake and cupcakes were all purchased from Lowe’s Neighborhood Market in Clemmons, NC. I couldn’t be happier with the way they turned out. I purchased the toppers and greenery myself. I showed them photos from Pinterest. This particular style of cake is called a “Naked cake” and I asked for butter icing instead of that thick hard gross tasting icing- yuck. I will forever use them for my cakes after they provided us such a pleasant experience.. everything tasted and looked beautiful and just as I had pictured it. FYI I did not ask for low sugar or no sugar in the smash cake. In my opinion, one day won’t hurt and she still slept like a champ that night. • how hard was the balloon arch? So much easier than I thought it would be. I purchased a hand held pump for $4 at Target and blew all of the balloons up the night before. I purchased a balloon arch kit off of amazon which came with everything else we needed. It came with a long strip with holes and you just put the ends of the balloons in the holes. I hung it on the wall with command strips. • where did you purchase all of the decor? Over the course of November, I went to Homegoods, Marshall’s, Michaels, At Home, Amazon and Hobby Lobby. I picked up tree branches outside, painted them white and added glitter for the vase on the left side of the table, and then for her milestone photo display, I grabbed a thicker branch from outside and hung the photos from that with fishing wire. As far as her banners go, I just used my cricut machine to spell out her name and “one”. The snowflake garlands are just cheap snow flake ornaments that I hung on string. We only invited about 20ish close friends and family. I wanted it to be small and sentimental. Her first birthday party definitely goes down as one of my most favorite days so far! Find out how to make your jungle themed 1st birthday a roaring good time!
My baby girl is ONE! I can't believe how quickly a whole year has flown by since we welcomed Piper Jane into our family. A few of my favorite things about her- she is mostly-spunk-with-a-dash-of-sweet, her adorable tooth-y grin, the way she kicks her legs and points when she sees horses, dogs, and animals at
A huge Korean tradition at a child's 1st birthday is the "doljabi". This is where the child is presented with various objects that represent something ie. money = wealth, yarn/string = long life. It's said that whatever the child chooses will determine their future. Of course it's silly and superstitious. We don't believe in any of it but it's a fun little tradition that everyone in our family has participated in. It's a way to have all the guests gather and give their full attention to the birthday child. Life Designed The is an opportunity to have a raffle where guests predict which object (and therefore which profession/future) Mia will choose. They take a tag, write their name on the back and drop it in the appropriate can. After Mia participates in her doljabi, a "winner" will be picked at random from the chosen can and awarded a prize. So for this activity, I was originally thinking about using mason jars but I was at the dollar store and saw jumbo baby bottle piggy banks. I contemplated it for about 20 seconds. They were $4.50 each and a baby bottle is more for a baby shower than a 1st birthday. Life Designed Next to the bottles were these piggybanks and they were only $1 each! As much as I love our Canadian money, something had to be done about this. Right when I walked into Michael's there in front of me was pink camouflage scrapbook paper at Michael's on clearance for 39 cents a sheet so I picked up a few sheets, cut them to size and used double sided tape to wrap it around the cans: Life Designed I should mention, before I did that, I spray painted the edges of the cans white because they were a light purple grey tint. When making the front tags, I used my scallop edged circle paper punch. (The images are just Google images I found). Then I took my 1/8" single hole punch and punched holes on the top of each piece. Life Designed I liked how it all turned out until I tried to insert one tag into a can.... Life Designed It didn't fit!! How silly of me to not do a test before punching a zillion tags! So then... I had to manually trim each scalloped tag...what a pain but there's no point in creating waste. Life Designed Ok so now how was this all going to come together? I had this 12"x16" canvas that I picked up from the dollar store months ago but I needed to have it stand up on it's own on the table. Coincidentally I came across an old backing of a picture frame that I kept for some reason even though the frame was long gone. Life Designed Even though it's a lot smaller than the canvas, I knew it would still work but before I did that, I needed to add some foam core to the back - you'll find out why soon enough! Life Designed I stacked 3 layers of foam core and staple gunned it to the frame. Life Designed Then the backing got staple gunned to the frame and voila! Life Designed Yes, the back is ugly but it's going to be against the wall so we'll just keep this between you and me. I designed a sign in Publisher: Life Designed I love the chevron pattern but felt there was too much going on and decided to simplify: Life Designed Life Designed After I wrapped the paper around the canvas, I hammered some nails into the canvas/foam core and then hung the tags: Life Designed And there you have it! Life Designed It's just a fun activity to get the guests involved and of course, everyone loves a chance to win something!
