The military is increasingly using and relying on the term \"narrative\" in its lexicon. United States strategic guidance documents generally implore commanders to \"shape the narrative\" doctrinal publications recommend commanders to \"exploit a single narrative\" and operational plans direct commanders to execute an \"operational narrative.\" Although the concept of narrative is generally understood as telling a story, it is more important for practitioners to recognize narrative as a methodology for understanding and as a mode of communication. Integrating a narrative approach to military operations would be beneficial because it offers the potential to convey the meaning of our actions in a context that is relevant to a rival's understanding. A survey of current U.S. doctrine provides multiple and ambiguous definitions and functions of narrative. A shared understanding of narrative is required to prevent misunderstanding as future military commanders contemplate executing operations within a narrative framework. Specifically, this monograph will provide an analysis of the current military narrative development, narrative theory, and explore the current paradigm of U.S. communication efforts. Lastly, based on shared understanding this monograph provides with regard to the utility of narrative in planning and communications, it makes recommendations on potential application narrative theory to military operations. This monograph argues that the absence of understanding about what narrative is and what it can do limits the military's ability to utilize the tool effectively. Applying narrative theory to military planning and communicating activities will make messages and actions consonant with, and part of, military operations.

An original authentic engraving print (unmatted) by the famous 19th century illustrator Gustave Doré. Print Title: Then, upon the velvet sinking, I betook myself to linking Fancy unto fancy, … This print is ideal for framing. The page is sized 12 x 8.75 inches (30.5 x 22.5 cm) . The image size measures approx 10.5 x 7 inches (26.5 cm x 17.5 cm) surrounded by a white border. It is printed single sided, on standard white paper. The printed image itself is in a very good, clean condition. The reverse side of the print has a line from the poem. It is signed in the print by Dore, and also by one of the engravers. Edgar Allan Poe (1808 – 1849) – The Raven. First published in 1845, it tells the tale of a grieving lover as he gradually declines into madness following the loss of his true love Lenore. The man is further taunted and tormented by a talking raven, repeatedly uttering the word “Nevermore”, and the narrative poem has both mystical and supernatural overtones. The poem is one of the most famous ever written, and received much public acclaim, but never brought him much financial reward. This is in stark contrast to the achievements of Gustave Dore (1842 – 1883). He produced a large quantity of illustrated engravings which were financially very rewarding, but failed to achieve recognition as a great artist in his time. He produced a series of dark foreboding engravings in this, his his final work, published first in 1884, contrasting deep dark thoughts with areas of light. Most of his work comprises detailed line engraving, but “The Raven” features much softer lines reflecting the mood of the poem as if in a dream. Research shows that he received $140,000 for his work on “The Raven”, whereas Poe received the meagre sum of $9 for writing it. This print (unmatted) is from a 1996 version of the poem, and so is vintage but very much not antique. Please note that all my art prints are vintage or antique originals – not modern copies, reprints or reproductions. The image in the listing is a scan of the actual print that the buyer will receive. I personally guarantee the authenticity of each and every item I sell. All prints, whether antique, vintage or modern should be protected from exposure to direct sunlight. There is only 1 shipping fee that includes multiple purchases. I can ship worldwide within two business days of receiving cleared funds. All of my prints are sealed in a clear bag, protected by a rigid "Do Not Bend" board-backed envelope and are ideal to be given as a gift.
