In a previous post, titled ‘Are you aware of or ignoring your shadow self?’ I talked about embracing the more hidden parts of your psyche — or the parts that you’re not yet comfortable with or are ashamed of. In this post, I’d like to explain what my deck of tarot cards has to do […]
This is an A4 (29 x 21cm) digital print of The High Priestess taken from a scan of the original artwork from The Mythic Tarot by Liz Greene and Juliet Sharman-Burke. I did the original illustrations for this in 1986 and this version of the book and cards is now out of print. I will sign it underneath the image. If there is any other image from the pack which you would like, just let me know.

messenger of Water This is an open edition print of my original artwork from The Witches Wisdom Tarot, written by Phyllis Curott, illustrated by Danielle Barlow, and published by Hay House. It is printed on A4 225gm/m2 St Cuthberts Mill velvet paper. The image has a clean border around it and is packed in a biodegradeable cellophane sleeve. It is titled and signed in pencil in the lower border. All copyrights remain with the artist I advise waiting to choose mounts and frames until you have the prints in your hands. Then you can decide whether you want to show the titles and signature in the border, and have mounts cut to the exact size.

The Ace of Wands is a welcome card this morning, as it is embodies the well spring of creative energy, and is all that individuals can ask for, especially when taking on creative endeavours. Like all Aces, it brings new beginnings with raw energy. Here is abundant growth, imagination, and inspirational vision propelled by that abounding energy. Indicated in this card, that the goal may be difficult to attain, and has not yet been manifested in reality. Most important though, is that we move forward with confidence, and take the risk, whether we reach our goal or not. There will always be a next time. Many folks will say, I just can't seem to get inspired, or I need to be inspired to create. Personally I know I don't wait for inspiration. I believe it is always there at the surface. Motivation and inspiration follow not necessarily in this order, but I do need to get started, to keep at it, and follow through. The bottom line is, I know no one else is going to do it for me. I am the only one responsible for doing the creative work necessary to actualize my creative vision, and I would get nothing accomplished if I waited to get motivated or inspired. That said, I think I was born inspired to be creative, because inspiration comes from the soul, and I am following the creative path to where I want to go. My motivation is more about the discipline to get the work done. I have read that motivation and inspiration are very different. Motivation is an external push and inspiration comes from spirit and is an internal pull. I do believe this is true. However I can be inspired to create internally, but it doesn't mean my inspiration will be obviously manifested or apparent, perhaps it's hidden for one reason or another. We can't always feel inspired. This is when motivation can pick up the slack, and is the back up for me to follow through. Ultimately I think inspiration is the catalyst for my motivation. What inspires and motivates you?
Mythology is what originally sucked me into the world of tarot. My first deck was the original Mythic Tarot and ever since working with this deck I’m inclined to bring mythology into all my decks. For me, myth and symbolism go hand in hand and I love the way connecting cards to mythic characters adds additional layers to readings. During a period when I was really trying to get my head around the world of Celtic myth I hunted around for a tarot deck reflecting this theme. While there are many Celtic themed decks none of them really worked for me in the way I‘d hoped for. The Celtic Wisdom deck was a great help in providing me with a structure to learn and explore the myths, but it didn’t work as well for me as reading deck. You can see my review of the Celtic Wisdom deck here: http://www.aeclectic.net/tarot/cards/celtic-wisdom/review.shtml. (It's the second one). I had always loved the artwork of the Druidcraft deck and yet as an actual tarot I felt it fell short of the mark for me. In my desperation, one day I pondered the idea of linking the gods and goddesses of the Celtic pantheon to this deck and promptly set to work. What follows are my own correspondences after much reflection and time working with the deck. I don’t suggest that anyone else should take on board what I’ve done. I am writing this purely because it may have been helpful for me to see what someone else had done when I was developing my own system. I used the Celtic Wisdom set and the Druidcraft companion book as a starting point and then read up on the myths and made the connections that felt right to me. My aim was to match the mythic characters to the card archetypes and I have used a broad range of myths such as Welsh, Irish and Arthurian to draw from. I have also made links to the four aces. For what it’s worth, here is what I came up with: The Fool – Gwion Bach The Magician – Merlin / Math The Priestess – Rhiannon The Empress – Anu The Emperor – Arthur The Hierophant – Taliesin The Lovers – Tristan and Isolde The Chariot – Maeve / Epona Justice – Brigh The Hermit – Merlin The Wheel of Fortune – Arianrhod Strength – Brigid The Hanged Man – Green Man Death – Cerridwen / Morrigan Temperance – Brigid Cernunnos – Cernunnos The Tower – Taranis The Star – Sulis The Moon – Mannanan The Sun – Mabon / Belenus / Epona Rebirth – Taliesin The World – Guinevere King of Wands – Lugh / Llew Queen of Wands – Scathach Knight of Wands – Fionn mac Cumhaill Princess of Wands – Aine King of Swords – Nuada Queen of Swords – Macha Knight of Swords – Gwydion Princess of Swords – Blodeuwedd King of Cups – Ogma Queen of Cups – Nimue / Morgan le Fay Knight of Cups – Aengus mac Og Princess of Cups – Coventina King of Pentacles – Daghdha Queen of Pentacles – Rosmerta Knight of Pentacles – Goibniu Princess of Pentacles – Damara Ace of Wands – Airmed Ace of Swords – Lady of the Lake Ace of Cups – Boan Ace of Pentacles – Nematona I have found that the whole process of making these connections between the card archetypes and the myths really helped to personalise this deck for me. It's another way to add layers of meaning to your deck and a great way to learn more about mythology too.
