Let’s celebrate Earth Day with these AWESOME cootie catchers ! This activity is perfect for the month of April as this holiday is celebrated on April 22nd. But let’s not forget that protecting the environment is an everyday issue. Students will enjoy crafting their own cootie catchers (or fortune tellers), playing with them and learning about the environment and how to protect our planet. This is an Earth Day “print and go” activity for kids and students. It requires almost no prep. Just print, hand to your students and they'll do the rest! There 6 cootie catchers in this resource: inside the first cootie catcher are basic questions such how to help save the Earth, what the 3 Rs are, naming one item that can be recycled ... in the second fortune teller are images, all Earth Day related (a tree, a bike, a recycle / reuse symbol…) : your students will have to react to them, saying as many things as they want. Earth Day cootie catchers from 3 to 6 are blank templates, with just the outside done. Your students will be able to write whatever they want inside each cootie catcher in relation to Earth Day. For example: famous quotes or people involved in protecting the environment or things that they do to help save the planet. There are 2 options: A color version A black and white version, which is the one students prefer as they can choose their own colors for a unique Earth Day fortune teller. Your students don’t know how to make a cootie catcher ? Don’t worry : instructions are included. I even made a Video: how to make a cootie catcher to help them. On a flight last week, I was doing a graphic note for a presentation I am giving soon. The person sitting next to me took a side-ways glance (ok, a couple), over my shoulder at what I was doing. After a minute or so, he asked - Excuse me, how are you drawing on that?

While reading, tracking across the page from one line to the next can be tricky when the text is small, but for students with dyslexia or weak reading skills, it can be a problem regardless of the font size. So why is this the case? Perhaps one of the problems is poor tracking skills. What Exactly is Tracking? Tracking is the ability for one's eyes to move smoothly across the page from one line of text to another. Tracking difficulties happen when eyes jump backward and forward and struggle to stay on a single line of text. This results in problems such as word omissions, reversals, eye fatigue, losing your place while reading and most importantly it can impact normal reading development. Can Tracking be Improved? Tracking can be improved by strengthening eye muscles as well as getting your eyes and brain to work cooperatively. There are three eye movements that need to be developed: Fixations: The ability to hold one's eyes steady without moving off a target. Saccades: The ability to jump to new targets that randomly disappear and reappear in a different location. Pursuits: The ability to follow a moving target with one's eyes 10 Free Ways to Improve Tracking: Use Beeline Reader to read ebooks, PDFs and web pages will assist with tracking. This free technology makes tracking faster and easier by using a color gradient to guide your eyes from one line of text to another. Play ping pong - but more importantly, watch others play the game. Sit on the side of the table and keep your head steady. Watch the ball, moving your eyes back and forth across the table. Get a book but only read the first word and the last word in each line. Continue down the page. Time yourself and try to beat your speed. If reading words is slow or labored, just read the first and last letter on each line. Go to the site Eye Can Learn and do their eye-tracking exercises. Watch a metronome or crystal pendulum. Place the metronome or pendulum about 1-2 feet from your face, keep your head steady and move your eyes with the swinging metronome or pendulum. Use a laser pointer on a wall and watch the red dot while sweeping it across the wall: go up, down, left, right and diagonally. Use Apps like Dream Reader which will highlight the words while it reads the text. You can read along with the excellent synthesized voice options, or if you prefer, read the text yourself and turn off the audio. Adjust the speed so that words are highlighted while you read. Pick a common letter of the alphabet such as the letter "A." Select a book, or article and scan through the lines of text as if you are reading, circling the letter "A" every time they see it. Read aloud. This helps the eyes and brain to work together. Play an internet version of Pong. My favorite is Garfield Tabby Tennis. Size 30x30" Nick Veasey We live in a world obsessed with image. What we look like, what our clothes look like, houses, cars… I like to counter this obsession with superficial appearance by using x-rays to strip back the layers and show what it is like under the surface. Often the integral beauty adds intrigue to the familiar. We all make assumptions based on the external visual aspects of what surrounds us and we are attracted to people and forms that are aesthetically pleasing. I like to challenge this automatic way that we react to just physical appearance by highlighting the, often surprising, inner beauty. This society of ours, consumed as it is by image, is also becoming increasingly controlled by security and surveillance. Take a flight, or go into a high profile courtroom and your belongings will be x-rayed. The post arriving in corporations and government departments has often been x-rayed. Security cameras track our every move. Mobile phone receptions place us at any given time. Information is key to the fight against whatever we are meant to be fighting against. To create art with equipment and technology designed to help big brother delve deeper, to use some of that fancy complicated gadgetry that helps remove the freedom and individuality in our lives, to use that apparatus to create beauty brings a smile to my face. To mix my metaphors, we all know we shouldn’t judge a book by its cover, that beauty is more than skin deep. By revealing the inside, the quintessential element of my art speculates upon what the manufactured and natural world really consists of.
