The common core expectations for fractions have several differences from the way we were teaching fractions before. For example one word we now need to teach our students is the word "partitioning", which means breaking a whole into parts or fractions. Understanding fractions on a number line is also a new concept. Showing models of what later will be called improper fractions is also new for us. I've included examples of all these at different levels of difficulty in two new products. Each product contains the same problems. The first product is called Fraction Action Task Cards. I use them in three different ways. The first, I show them on the smart board for instructional practice whole group. A second way I use them is to post them around the room for students to circulate and work with a partner or independently to answer. You can vary this by printing 3 or 4 sets and handing out a set per table group. They can work independently or again with pairs to complete. The third way in which I use these, occurs toward the end of the unit when I pull small groups for review. These task cards are large enough for all in the group to see. The other product is in a game format. It is called Fraction Action Board Game and includes a colorful board game and 24 fraction game cards with answers on the back of each. I use these toward the end of the unit for students to play in partner sets as I work with my small groups. I use both products at the same time. Here you can see my kiddos standing around our smart board singing the words to this song. If you teach these responsibilities, then grab a copy of this song for your class. Just click on the picture below. There is so much material to teach regarding government at third grade that I divided it up into two separate units. The first is called Government Responsibilities: Local, State and National. The second unit is called Government Responsibilities 2: Legislative, Executive, Judicial. I've included lesson plans, activities, games, assessments... everything you need to teach these concepts. If you are new to teaching 3rd grade social studies or if you just want to spruce up what you have, these units will do the trick. My kiddos loved learning about government! I'd like to say I haven't posted because I've been caught up in the hustle and bustle of the holiday season but, unfortunately, it's because I have been sick. Usually I get my first cold from the kids in September as I'm adjusting to all of the germs surrounding me but this year my body waited until the week of my concert! What a great time?!?! Oh, well. It is working it's way out of my system and I can't wait for it to be gone. :) A few years ago I saw a teacher in my district present a lesson on using hula hoops to reinforce BAG on Soprano Recorder. (I feel awful, I can't remember who gave the presentation, I'd love to give her credit.) Basically, you need 3 hula hoops laid out in a column on the floor. Each one represents one of the pitches; B, A and G. The hoop that is farthest from the students is B. My hoops are different sizes because I found them at the dollar store. I don't really care about the size difference but I do like to use different colors when I do this. I find that the dollar store hoops are good for this because they are smaller and easier to jump if you want to do a skip from B-G. I start the warm-up as the conductor. If I am standing in a hoop, students respond by playing the appropriate pitch. If I am not standing in any of the hoops, then it's a rest. After my turn, I select at least 2 students to take turns as conductors. This is an easy little warm-up and a good way to review fingerings for BAG.

They are two ways of expressing the same thing, the real thing! 432 Hz / 12 = a perfect 36 Why 432 Hz? In 1936 the American Standards Association recommended that the A above middle C be tuned to 440 Hz. This standard was taken up as the International Concert pitch. Hmmmm... I wonder why? Believe me, they knew exactly what they were doing. “If one should desire to know whether a kingdom is well governed, if its morals are good or bad, the quality of its music will furnish the answer.” – Confucius Now how do we tell the world we need to re-set the International Concert pitch to A = 432 Hz? A = 432 Hz, known as Verdi’s ‘A’ is an alternative tuning that is mathematically consistent with the universe. Music based on 432 Hz transmits beneficial healing energy, because it is a pure tone of math fundamental to nature. There is a theory that the change from 432 Hz to 440 Hz was dictated by Nazi propaganda minister, Joseph Goebbels. He used it to make people think and feel a certain manner, and to make them a prisoner of a certain consciousness. Then around 1940 the United States introduced 440 Hz worldwide, and finally in 1953 it became the ISO 16-standard. What is 440 Hz? 440 Hz is the unnatural standard tuning frequency, removed from the symmetry of sacred vibrations and overtones that has declared war on the subconscious mind of Western Man. In a paper entitled ‘Musical Cult Control’, Dr. Leonard Horowitz writes: “The music industry features this imposed frequency that is ‘herding’ populations into greater aggression, psycho social agitation, and emotional distress predisposing people to physical illness.” You just have to go out in the street and take a look around. What do you see? School kids, young adults on their way to work, a woman pushing her baby in a stroller, a man walking his dog and what do they all have in common? iPods or MP3 Players! Ingenious, isn’t it? “If you want to find the secrets of the universe, think in terms of energy, frequency and vibration.” – Nikola Tesla TPTB, are successfully lowering the vibrations of not only the young generation but the rest of us as well. These destructive frequencies entrain the thoughts towards disruption, disharmony and disunity. Additionally, they also stimulate the controlling organ of the body, the brain, into disharmonious resonance, which ultimately creates disease and war. This is the biggest mystery. For over 25,000 years the Universal Truth was not available to the people of this planetary system. It is now finally being received on this planet. Deep seekers of the truth that are open minded and ready will receive it. Throughout history, numerous clues and hints regarding geometry and frequency have been staring at us, calling to us, and waiting for us to put them into place like pieces of a giant puzzle. Here at the dawn of a new age, this sonic-geometric puzzle is finally nearing completion, revealing the building blocks of a language based on energy, frequency and form. How will we use it?
