HANS WITHOOS (Rotterdam, The Netherlands) Tulips of Hope, 2019 60 x 40 inches - Edition of 9 Fine art inkjet print on special paper rag, on Dibond with a certified Liquid Gloss finish. Frameless, floating on the wall. Hans Withoos career spans more than twenty years worldwide. After graduating from the Art Academy. He specializes in fashion and video/photography. Although highly successful in his international fashion work, he is also prolific in his autonomous work, making many photography series over the years. Mostly situated in recognizable places and cities around the world. His fascination is with beauty in all its aspects. In his new series: ” Still Life” he brings the beauty and the light of the 17-century Dutch old masters into life again. Hans Withoos photography is set in a world simultaneously familiar and different. In Withoos exaggerated scenes, the figures crowding the images become archetypes, and the viewer is overcome by a sense of alienation. The work is full of layered, staged images with idiosyncratic aesthetics. Sometimes the photographs evoke emotions related to suffering, sensuality and hidden oppressiveness. At other times the images depict the complete opposite and are deliberately emotionless.

Explore the dutch still life inspired photographs of Paulette Tavormina. From fruits to insects, she flawlessly arranges and shoots the most stunning still life scenes.
The sensual and allusive and pensive artistry of New York-based photographer Paulette Tavormina honors and exults the fruits and flowers of everyday life. Gaze, and be captured. Paulette’s inspiration: The formality, poetry, and lavish inner life of sixteenth- and seventeenth- century Dutch still life paintings of the great Old Masters. Life, death, beauty, rapture, it’s all there. With their sense of the fullness of seasons, and time passing, both the canvases that inspire her and her photography burst with life and flavor and heavenly sensuality. Paulette finds the most luscious rare and ripe fruits at Manhattan greenmarkets and shapes them into divine decadence of sexy and suggestive erotica of the most elegant kind. Come and be surprised. I am confident that you will be turned on by their beauty. Come and Meet Paulette Tavormina: Ponder Her Rare Creativity Paulette Tavormina lives and works in New York City where she stalks the city’s many farmers markets searching for the perfectly imperfect flora that characterize her photographs. Paulette’s highly detailed and luscious arrangements recall the sumptuous detail of seventeenth century Old Master still life painters, She highlights the fruit, leaves, rare weeds and flowers as well as oysters (a favorite Dutch detail) and lemons peels, in her the lavish table settings. “Growing up in a Sicilian family, food was the central focus of our gatherings. The lively conversations, preparation, and creation of every feast were as important as the celebration of sitting down together and breaking bread. The legacy of these culinary traditions is emblematic of my life and textures my work.” – Paulette Tavormina But look at how she love a little decay…the wilted leaves, the faded flowers, the juicy peaches and plums with bugs and creatures creeping and crawling. With a painterly perspective reminiscent of Francisco de Zurbaran, Adriaen Coorte and Giovanna Garzoni, Tavormina creates worldly still lifes. Tavormina’s photographs are in museum, corporate and private collections and have been exhibited in Paris, London, Moscow, Lugano, New York, Los Angeles, Miami, Boston and Chicago. Tavormina, who is largely self-taught, currently photographs works of art for Sotheby’s and works as a commercial photographer. Her latest project, The Beekman 1802 Heirloom Cookbook for the Fabulous Beekman Boys, was a critical success and she is currently photographing the Beekman Boys heirloom dessert cookbook. Previously, Tavormina was a prop and food stylist in Hollywood, her work seen on the screen in films such as Nixon and The Perfect Storm. “In the 1990s, when I was living in Santa Fe, New Mexico, a close friend introduced me to seventeenth century still life painters, including Giovanna Garzoni and Maria Sibylla Merian. Around the same time, my work as a commercial photographer was beginning to develop. The sensuality of the Old Masters and the technicality of photography appeals to me; in my photographs, I am directly inspired by classic natura morta imagery and the abundance of perfectly imperfect flowers, fruits, and vegetables that I find in the markets.”— Paulette Tavormina Where to Find Paulette's Work All of Paulette’s photography is available through MARCH in San Francisco, which shows her work and represents Paulette superbly in California. In Still Diet, Italian photographer Dan Bannino elevates the seeming frivolity of celebrity fad diets to the realm of high art, shooting the often heavily restricted meals consumed by Beyonce and Gwyneth Paltrow in the style of Old Master still lifes. In his well-lit apartment studio, Bannino imagines the dinner setting after the eating has left off. The table, not yet cleared, is still stained and littered with the uneaten remnants and refuse of the meal, allowing us to soak in the array of ripened fruit, cold eggs, and smoked cigarettes.
FROM ISSUE #161 At first glance, I could have sworn I was looking at an oil painting by a Flemish master circa 1650. But no, the still life in front of me was contemporary—and it was a photograph, one of an ongoing series constructed and shot by artist Paulette Tavormina in her New York City studio.

Pears can be poached in several different ways but have you tried pears poached in panela? If you haven't, it is a must-try. Panela basically is a solid piece of unrefined cane sugar. Ever since I tried panela for the first time, I fell in love with the flavor of it. It goes fantastic with fruits or even breads. There is this very popular dessert in Honduras during Easter called "Torrejas". Basically, they melt the panela in water and add cinnamon, then is brought to a boil. Once the sauce has thickened, bread is added to the pot. The bread then starts to suck all those flavors. Out of this world good. Panela is easy to find this days, most supermarkets carry it. I like to spice things up a little so I add cardamon and cloves. The smell of these pears together with the spices will perfume your entire house. You can also poach other fruits. Figs are amazing for it, peaches, apples the list is too long. The best way to serve it is warm or at room temperature. A scoop of vanilla ice cream, is never a bad idea. Ingredients: 5 Bosc pears, peeled 16 oz panela, roughly chopped 7 cups of water 10 cloves 2 large cinnamon sticks 10 cardamon pots Place all the ingredients (except the pears) in a large pot and bring it to a boil. Cover and let it boil for 20 minutes then add the pears. Poach the pears for 25 minutes or until tender. Serve warm or at room temperature with vanilla ice cream.
