I am loving how the quilting turned out on this Circle Around quilt. I love it so much, that I am adding it to my "to do wish list." The pattern is from the Summer 2010 issue of Quilts and More. Fabric is Freebird by MoMo.
It has been a long, long wait from the start of my Farmer's Wife Sampler quilt, and you have stuck with me the whole way. Now, after weeks and weeks of nothing but individual blocks, I'm so excited (so, so excited) to show you the finished quilt top (minus the borders). Please excuse all the pictures. There are alot of them! My design wall (aka - a plastic picnic tablecloth) worked great and kept the un-sewn blocks from being tramped on through this process. I set the blocks on point, and used little squares of printed fabrics for the cornerstones, while using a creamy white for the sashings. I haven't decided what fabrics to use for the borders, so for now I just love to stare at it, in all of it's creamy, colorful goodness! If you haven't done so yet, you really ought to give this one a try! It's hard to believe we are into the last few months of yet another year. Quilting a lot is one way that helps me cope with the long, dark, cold days of winter. I love sitting under a quilt while I hand sew the binding. For this last quarter of the Finish Along, I plan to focus on getting several tops done that are hanging in my closet. Let's take a look at the line-up, shall we? 1. Glorious Fall. Since this picture, I have added another row but I still want to add a bit more. 2. Scrappy trip (left over from last quarter) 3. Converging Corners ( also left over from last quarter) 4. These are the scrappy trip blocks made by ladies in a club I used to host. I'm sure they would love to see me get this together and donated : ) 5. Up Up and Away. This has been a top far too long 6. Stringy Pinwheels 7. x and + made from Comma 8. The quilt made from blocks sent to me from the Mid Century Modern girls 9. Lilly Belle 10. Hexi-bets 11. Plus Quilt. I love this thing so must make it bigger before I quilt it. 12. Twin Beach House quilts 13. These blocks need to become another quilt for Hospice What a ridiculous list!!! I decided to put lots of UFO's on the list this time so I can't get bored. One thing's for sure -- there will be an awful lot of batting and backing purchased over the next few months. On a personal note, I will be unplugging for a bit to concentrate on these two. They get married on Saturday. So excited for them : ) Enjoy your week. I'm in for a very busy one! linking up with Leanne for the 4th quarter

It's only been 6 weeks since the Fractured QAL started and I was so happy that we were going to take it slow, but I guess I just got on the "excitement" bandwagon with everyone else, because my top is finished! Yippee! I found the perfect backing fabric on our Saturday day trip to get apples. Hopefully this weekend I'll be able to get the backing, batting, and top pin-basted together in anticipation of quilting it next week. I'm going to do something pretty simple quilting-wise... probably straight, veritical lines. I'm really liking that look these days and think it might look great with this quilt. I visited Vicki's blog earlier this morning and was surprised to see what everyone else is doing. Wanda has already started a 2nd, 3rd, & 4th quilt using the Fractured block parts and several others have started their "Red Center" quilts with their own take on it! I love that. Everyone takes the pattern and makes their own little changes to it. Kathy really started something didn't she? If you are interested in seeing everyone's progress go here! Oh Oh! I just noticed that the upper right hand corner the last 2 blocks in the 2nd row from the top are upside down! Guess I'll have to fix that right away. Glad I saw it before I got it all quilted. I also started playing around with leftover block parts, since I originally was going to start a "Red Center." Then, I saw Julia's quilt and decided I really like the "Chevron" version. I haven't decided which fabrics to use yet, but it will be scrappy for sure! Probably a little bit of everything. Take care,

Ever looked at the edge of your fabric and think how pretty the markings are? Well, this list Fabric Selvage Projects will make you wish you've saved them.
My sister came to visit yesterday and she mentioned that she was thinking of getting some new pillows for her couch. I'm sure she had NO idea that I would whip out some upholstery samples and pillow forms before she could even finish her sentence. It was merely a passing comment. Well, she should have known better. Ha! I immediately started picking out suitable fabrics from my stash of sample squares that have been sitting in my closet for years. (thanks to my dear friend Amy.) Within about 30 minutes or less, I would say, she had 2 new couch pillows. Aren't they lovely??? For each pillow, I used 3 upholstery squares. No two squares are the same, but I love how well they coordinate and how much interest that adds! I made them with an envelope back so they could easily be washed. (She has 2 little boys, so this is a necessity!) And the icing on the cake? I had a few extra IKEA pillow forms on hand that are soooooo soft and smooshy and good. And they fit per-fect-ly. Sweet!

This beautiful quilt is Kristie's. I LOVE how it turned out! I used double warm and white batting and an off white thread through out the whole quilt. I started with the pebbles in the white diamond area's and then discovered I could continue them through the print fabric.....which created the rounded squares as a secondary design. The feathers are fresh and fun, fitting for the fabric! Kristie did an outstanding job piecing it. ~Jenny~

When I posted an update about my sashiko style stitching the other day I received some really lovely comments. And I thank you for all of them. I was, however, left with this feeling that lots of people are afraid of hand stitching. Don't think they could get their stitches small enough. Or even enough. Or something or another enough. Hogwash! Before I get started though let me make something clear, I am not an expert in any way, shape, or form. This is just my opinion and how I do things. Many may do it differently. And their way is most likely as good as or better than mine. Hand stitching is not about getting every stitch exactly the same length. Experience makes you more likely to have even stitches but it is not necessary. It is more the overall effect created by the stitches, and if anyone ever comes up close - quilt police style - to examine each and every stitch then poke them in the eye I am sure this is not someone you associate with normally and don't offer them a mince pie, cookie or cup of tea. When hand stitching with perle cotton you are not going for teeny tiny stitches. That would be counter productive. You are going for impact, enhancement of the quilt design, etc. Big is better, really and truly. The other thing you need to do is look at the back, because if you are trying to get the stitches on the back of your quilt to look exactly like the ones on the front then you are a way better person than me. Personally I am trying to do what quilting does, hold the quilt layers together, compliment the piecing and fabrics with the stitching, create something usable and pretty. As you can see above, the stitches are there, the pattern is there but the stitch length is shorter and the gaps between wider. It is what happens when you weave a needle in and out between quilt layers. Trust me here, when I first tried this I spent anal hours trying to make the back and the front exact. What a waste of time! Sometimes, horror of horrors, you might not properly catch the backing layer of fabric, or just get the needle through a little bit. The world will not end. Remember, two photos up, the back didn't look too bad? Now look even closer. Imperfections abound, if you are the quilt police and looking that closely. My other piece of advice about hand stitching with perle is to do with seams. When I am stitching something like the Christmas stars I did a couple of weeks ago I never try to get close to the seam. I go with the same 1/4" rule we use in our seam allowance. There are two reasons I do this. In my mind it looks better set back from the seam. And two, you have less layers of fabric to stitch through if you have pressed the seams in that direction in that part of the quilt. You wouldn't think two more layers of cotton would make such a big difference, but it does. I am not sure if this blog post helped anyone at all, but if it encourages just one person to buy some perle and try it out I shall be smiling. Susan
