Hello and Happy New Year my dear followers! Wish you all the best in the year 2024! It’s been a while since I posted my last free pattern, because I spent the last few weeks enjoying the holidays and taking care of my two adorable boys. Now I’m back with lots of energy and enthusiasm! The pattern for today is a men’s oversized sweatshirt, with blocking detail. It is a wonderful stash buster – so you can use your smaller pieces of fabric to create a whole new garment. Let’s have a closer look at the design: Tiana’s Closet sewing patterns are made in 10 sizes from XXS to 5XL so you may find a suitable size for yourself. If you are not sure which size suits you, take a look at the measurement table before doing anything here: SIZE GUIDE. The pattern is made using layered PDF, please check for your desired size before printing so you won’t waste your paper. I have included a first page with many details about sizing and printing, so please first read the first page and make sure you know what size you need! If you still do not know how to print a layered PDF, please check for the printing instruction in this post: PRINTING GUIDE. My patterns are now made in both A4/Letter paper and A0 paper format so you can print at home or at any print shop! For home printers, you can print this using your home printer and either A4 or Letter paper. I calculated the printing area so that you will be able to use either type of paper to print the pattern out perfectly. Always print the first page first and check with the test square if you are printing at the right scale before you print out the whole pattern – avoid waste of ink and waste of paper, save the earth! Some PC may print smaller than actual size even when you choose 100% scale – I don’t know why this problem exist, but my HP laptop cannot print true to size. I have to scale up to 103% to get the right size. You may need to check with your PC to see if it prints true to size, if not, scale up a bit. I was informed by a reader that you can also print the pdf as image to get the right scale, however I never tested it on my computer. SEWING INSTRUCTION You will need: Fabric of your choice. This pattern is intended for sweatshirt fabrics. Scissors, pencil or fabric marker, ruler, pins Sewing machine/Serger or needle and thread Printed pattern How much fabric do you need for this piece of garment? To be precise, you may need to check how much fabric you need before buying. It will depend on the selected pattern size, the width, and design of the fabric you plan to use. Just to be sure, print all the paper patterns and lay them out at the width of fabric you plan to use (usually from 90 to 150 centimeters or 35 to 60 inches). Measure how much fabric you will need. Don’t forget to account for pieces that need to be cut multiple times and pieces that are cut on the fold. Cutting instruction: After printing out and taping all the pattern pages together, you will get something similar to this: All my patterns already include 1cm (3/8in) seam allowance. Just cut the pattern pieces as is and use a 1cm seam allowance when you sew. The fabric will be cut into following pieces: Back: cut 2 mirrored pieces Upper Front A: cut 1 piece Lower Front A: cut 1 piece Upper Front B: cut 1 piece Lower Front B: cut 1 piece Sleeve: cut 2 mirrored pieces Sleeve Cuff Ribbing: cut 2 Waist Ribbing: cut 1 piece on the fold Neck Ribbing: cut 1 piece Place the pattern pieces on the fabric, pin the pattern pieces to the fabric to secure them in place. Using sharp scissors, carefully cut out the fabric pieces along the outer lines of the pattern. Take your time to ensure precise and clean cuts, as this will affect the fit and overall appearance of your garment. Make sure to mark all notches and other design features such as darts, pleats, draw marks etc. from the pattern pieces onto your fabric. When sewing the garment, pay attention to notches, they must match up. Sewing instruction: 1. Place two Back pieces right sides facing, pin and sew the center back seam. 2. Place Upper Front A and Lower Front A right sides facing, pin and sew to join. 3. Place Upper Front B and Lower Front B right sides facing, pin and sew to join. 4. Place the two Front pieces right sides facing. Sew the center front seam. 5. Place the Front and Back right sides facing. Pin and sew the shoulder and side seams. 6. Fold the Sleeve right sides in, align the underarm seam and sew. 7. Sew the Sleeve Cuff Ribbing to the Sleeve. I have been making a bunch of jogger pants for my elder son who is going to kindergarten this year, and his little brother who is starting to walk – and I really enjoyed it. It takes me only half an hour to cut and sew a complete pair of pants, and with whatever fun prints my kids love (my 5 year old kept asking for a pair of construction vehicle printed pants and I finally found a piece of fleece with lots of crane trucks and dump trucks lol). In the making of pants for my sons, I also make a pdf pattern for a range of sizes from 12 months to 12 years old. I figure it will be more convenient to just print them out whenever I need them. I use the general measurements for kid’s clothing from the book Metric Pattern Cutting for Children’s Wear and Babywear by Winifred Aldrich (it’s an amazing book sold on Amazon). You can find the size guide for kid’s clothing on my website HERE. Tips: Choose the size based on your kid’s height instead of age! You can print this using your home printer and A4/Letter paper. SEWING INSTRUCTION You will need Fabric of your choiceElastic (1in/2.5cm width)Scissors, pencil or fabric marker, ruler, pinsSewing machine/Serger or needle and threadPrinted pattern What fabric can be used for this project? The jogger pants can be made with various fabric – fleece, cotton, flannel you name it. How much fabric do you need for this piece of garment? To be precise, you may need to check how much fabric you need before buying. It will depend on the selected pattern size, the width, and design of the fabric you plan to use. Just to be sure, print all the paper patterns and lay them out at the width of fabric you plan to use (usually from 90 to 150 centimeters or 35 to 60 inches). Measure how much fabric you will need. Don’t forget to account for pieces that need to be cut multiple times and pieces that are cut on the fold. For this pattern, you will need to use a sewing machine that has the function to sew stretch fabric (zig zag stitch for example), or use a serger which is designed to sew stretch fabric nicely. Cutting instruction: The pattern comes in 6 pieces: You will see that there are 2 sets of lines on each pattern size. The inner lines are sewing line (and you sew along these lines), and the outer lines are cutting lines (you cut the fabric along these lines, remember the folding lines where you have to fold the fabric before cutting). The distance between sewing line and cutting line is seam allowance, and it varies from point to point. For example, the side seam allowance is about 1/2 inch (1.2cm), and seam allowance at hemline is 1 inch (2.5cm). This is the reason why I do not remove the sewing lines from the pattern. Please use it as a guide to know how much seam allowance you need to give at each seam. Fabric will be cut into following pieces: Front: cut 2Back: cut 2Pocket Piece: cut 2Pocket Lining: cut 2Waistband: cut 1 on the foldPant Cuff: cut 2 on the fold Make sure to mark all notches and other design features such as darts, pleats etc. from the pattern pieces onto your fabric. When sewing the garment, pay attention to notches, they must match up. Sewing instruction: 1. Serge/zig zag stitch the raw edge to prevent fabric from unraveling. 2. Place a pair of Front and Pocket Lining right side facing, so that the slashed edges of the Pocket Lining and the Front Pant match. Sew along the pocket edge. Staystitch seam allowance toward the Pocket Lining. 3. Place the Pocket Piece and Pocket Lining right side facing, matching the notch on the Pocket Piece. Sew to attach 2 pieces together. 4. Lay the Front and Back right side facing (make sure the pocket lays flat). Pin and sew to join the Front to the Back. Do this with both legs. 5. Sew the inseam of the legs. 6. Turn one leg inside out, put it into the other leg, matching the crotch curve. Pin and sew the crotch curve. 7. Sew two ends of the Waistband. Fold the loop in half so that the seam allowance is hidden inside. Pin the waistband to the main garment (careful with the pocket opening). Sew to join the waistband to the garment, leaving a 2in/5cm opening to insert elastic. Insert elastic and sew to close the opening. 8. Sew two ends of the Pant Cuff. Fold the loop in half with the seam allowance hidden inside. Pin the Cuff to the opening of the pan leg, sew to attach. Now you get the final garment, easy huh? If you are familiar with the process, you can finish it in just 15 minutes! After the successful launch of our Refillable Body Wash back in October 2022, we wanted to explain how we as a business and other brands within the beauty sector can become more sustainable with the worlds-first paper, plastic-free and home compostable pouch for liquid. Who is Greenspark? Greenspark is a tech platform that works with brands and consolidates donations then passes them on to much larger charities, such as Plastic Bank. Their tech integrates with our website so that each bottle sold is tracked and the donation taken, making it a smooth and integrated process for the brand and consumer. So far 1.5 million pieces of ocean-bound plastic have been rescued by Greenspark members. They offer the brand the ability to remove ocean-bound plastic, plant trees or carbon offset. With our refillable drive, Proverb has chosen to work with ocean-bound plastic. The Proverb donations, via Greenspark, then go to Plastic Bank. Who is Plastic Bank? Plastic pollution is among the greatest threats to our oceans and marine life. The United Nations estimates that every year 8 million tonnes of plastic waste ends up in waterways and if we continue to consume and discard single-use plastics at this rate, by 2050 there could be more plastic in our ocean than fish. Plastic Bank® builds ethical recycling ecosystems in coastal communities while creating positive economic opportunities for those who help collect it. Currently, more than half of plastic produced is designed to be single-use, and less than 9% is recycled. Today, over 5 trillion pieces of plastic litter the ocean. The most famous accumulation of discarded plastic is the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, an area of floating plastic pollution approximately three times the size of France. To fight plastic pollution, society must move away from the linear model of “Take, Make, Dispose”, and instead embrace a circular model that recycles and reuses the same resources indefinitely. Plastic Bank promotes the circular economy by monetising plastic waste. Their collectors receive a premium for the materials they collect which helps them provide basic family necessities. The collected material is reborn as Social Plastic® which can be easily reintegrated into products and packaging as part of a closed-loop supply chain. Plastic Bank prevents ocean-bound plastics from reaching our waterways and reduces the number of new plastics being created by encouraging companies to switch to recycled sources. What is happening with ocean-bound plastic? With every Proverb product sold, we donate money to help fund the work of Plastic Bank through Greenspark. They give us an exact measurement of how many pieces of ocean-bound plastic it will remove, so both Proverb and the customer can measure their personal impact. Serge/zig zag stitch the raw edge to prevent fabric from unraveling. 2. Gather the top edge of the Lower Back and Lower Front pieces to match the bottom edge of the Back Yoke and Front Yoke respectively. 3. Make 4 pieces of tie straps. This is a tutorial on How to make spaghetti straps/drawstrings. 4. Place two Back Yoke pieces right side facing, pin and sew the neckline. Trim and clip the seam allowance for smoother curve. Staystitch the seam allowance to the inside piece if needed. 5. Place one pair of Front Yoke right side facing, put the tie strings in between two layers, one at the very top corner of the center front line, one about 4 inches (10cm) from the first string. Sew the neckline and the center seam. Clip corners, seam allowance and turn the fabric over. Staystitch the seam allowance to the inside piece if needed. 5. Place Front Yoke and Back Yoke right side facing, pin and sew the shoulder seams. Fold the lining layer in and press to flatten. 6. Place two Lower Front pieces right side facing, sew the center seam starting from the hem toward the neckline, stopping and backstitching at the notch. Fold the unsewn seam allowance inward and sew to keep it from turning out. 7. Press the seam allowance on the Front Yoke to the wrong side. Place the Lower Front in between two layers, right side facing up, pin and sew very closely to the folded edge to join. You can refer to the first video of this post for a clearer visualization. Repeat with the back of the garment. 8. Turn the main garment over and sew the side seams. 9. Gather the cap of the Sleeve piece, matching the measurement of the armhole opening on the main garment. Sew the under arm seam of the Sleeve. Fold the seam allowance at the bottom end of the Sleeve and sew the hem, leaving 1 inch opening. Measure a piece of elastic so that it fits nicely on your bicep and cut. Thread the elastic piece into the casing created by the sleeve hem and sew two ends of the elastic together. Sew to close the casing. 10. Turn the Sleeve right side out. Pin it to the armhole opening on the main garment so that the right sides are facing. Match the notches, pin and sew to attach the Sleeve to the main garment. 13. Fold and sew the hem of the top. Give it a good iron and you’re done! If you think sewing with two layers of the yoke is too tedious, you can skip it and use bias binding to finish the neckline.
