This pajama pants pattern is very simple to make and follow. We’ll show you how to sew a pair of cute and comfortable pants in this step by step guide.
I have been receiving requests about making lounge wear – and I am sharing today the first item in my lounge wear series: the Hattie wide leg lounge pants. It is a very beginner friendly project and I am pretty sure you can get it done in less than an hour. Let’s look at the Hattie lounge pants in different angles: Tiana’s Closet sewing patterns are made in 10 sizes from XXS to 5XL so you may find a suitable size for yourself. If you are not sure which size suits you, take a look at the measurement table before doing anything here: SIZE GUIDE. The pattern is made using layered PDF, please check for your desired size before printing so you won’t waste your paper. I have included a first page with many details about sizing and printing, so please first read the first page and make sure you know what size you need! If you still do not know how to print a layered PDF, please check for the printing instruction in this post: PRINTING GUIDE. My patterns are now made in both A4/Letter paper and A0 paper format so you can print at home or at any print shop! For home printers, you can print this using your home printer and either A4 or Letter paper. I calculated the printing area so that you will be able to use either type of paper to print the pattern out perfectly. Always print the first page first and check with the test square if you are printing at the right scale before you print out the whole pattern – avoid waste of ink and waste of paper, save the earth! Some PC may print smaller than actual size even when you choose 100% scale – I don’t know why this problem exist, but my HP laptop cannot print true to size. I have to scale up to 103% to get the right size. You may need to check with your PC to see if it prints true to size, if not, scale up a bit. I was informed by a reader that you can also print the pdf as image to get the right scale, however I never tested it on my computer. SEWING INSTRUCTION You will need: Fabric of your choice. This pattern is intended for woven fabric, but you can also use knits (go down 1 size) Some 1 inch (2.5cm) elastic for waistband. The length should be your waist measurement minus 4 inches (10cm). Scissors, pencil or fabric marker, ruler, pins Sewing machine/Serger or needle and thread Printed pattern How much fabric do you need for this piece of garment? To be precise, you may need to check how much fabric you need before buying. It will depend on the selected pattern size, the width, and design of the fabric you plan to use. Just to be sure, print all the paper patterns and lay them out at the width of fabric you plan to use (usually from 90 to 150 centimeters or 35 to 60 inches). Measure how much fabric you will need. Don’t forget to account for pieces that need to be cut multiple times and pieces that are cut on the fold. Cutting instruction: After printing out and taping all the pattern pages together, you will get something similar to this: You will see that there are 2 sets of lines on each pattern piece. The inner lines are sewing line (and you sew along these lines), and the outer lines are cutting lines (you cut the fabric along these lines, remember the folding lines where you have to fold the fabric before cutting). The distance between sewing line and cutting line is seam allowance, and it varies from point to point. For example, the side seam allowance is about 1/2 inch (1.2cm), and seam allowance at hemline is 1 inch (2.5cm). This is the reason why I do not remove the sewing lines from the pattern. Please use it as a guide to know how much seam allowance you need to give at each seam. The fabric will be cut into following pieces: Front: cut 2 mirrored Back: cut 2 mirrored Waistband: cut 1 on the fold Place the pattern pieces on the fabric, pin the pattern pieces to the fabric to secure them in place. Using sharp scissors, carefully cut out the fabric pieces along the outer lines of the pattern. Take your time to ensure precise and clean cuts, as this will affect the fit and overall appearance of your garment. Make sure to mark all notches and other design features such as darts, pleats, draw marks etc. from the pattern pieces onto your fabric. When sewing the garment, pay attention to notches, they must match up. Sewing instruction: Serge the raw edges to prevent fabric from unravelling. Place one piece of Front and the corresponding Back right side facing. Pin and sew the outseam and the inseam. Repeat with the other pair to get two legs. You can add side seam pocket if you like. This is a guide on How to add a side seam pocket. Turn one leg inside out, push it into the other leg. Match the crotch and seam. Pin and sew the crotch line. Turn the main garment right side out. Attach the elastic waistband to the main garment. You can refer to this tutorial on How to sew elastic waistband/cuff Fold and sew the hem of the pants. Do you have that pair of lounging pants that you absolutely love?! You know the ones! They are super cozy and they aren't too short (I HATE THAT). Well, my friends, that is how I feel about my "Stewie Pants". Well, actually, they are my husbands's "Stewie Pants" but that's beside the point. ;) Awhile back my husband and I made a Halloween costume. Being that it was our first time, we weren't quite sure how much of the main yellow fabric to get. Erroring on the side of caution, we ended up getting about 4 yards more than we needed. Please don't laugh. To our credit, we did ask the lady at JoAnn's and that is how we were directed. Needless to say, we had A BUNCH left over. I have been really wanting to make some comfy lounging pants, especially since I am sad to say, my "Stewie Pants" have almost had it. Not quite yet, but they are getting there. Because I had so much of this yellow fabric, I decided to use it as a test. Worst case scenario, I fail, and this lovely yellow fabric will have to be discarded. Best case scenario, I have a pair of really cool yellow pants. Hey, the fabric goes back to what I was saying about being SUPER COZY. The color may just take a bit of time to get used to. This was my first time making something like this without a pattern. I am actually really happy with the way they turned out. If you have some lovely fabric you need to get rid of, this is a great way to use it. WHAT YOU NEED: Approximately 3 of fabric Thread that matches your fabric Scissors 3/4 inch Elastic-however much you choose for a comfortable waist band. Sewing gauge Ironing board Iron Needle Large metal paperclip or Large Safety pin Step 1: Fold your fabric in half. Neatly fold your old pajama pants in half. Place on top of fabric. Step 2: Cut around your pants, allowing extra fabric for seams. Make sure you stretch your elastic of your old pants to give you an idea of how wide you need to keep your new fabric on the top. You can see I just cut straight instead of curving. I allowed approximately 1/2 inch on the sides and about 2 inches on the top and bottom. Step 3: Lay a new piece of your fabric out, doubled again. Flip your cut out piece on top and carefully cut around it. Step 4: You should now have 4 individual pieces that look like this. *Note the curved part of the fabric. Step 5: I used a lattice type setting on my sewing machine here. I don't have a serger so this is what I did instead to reinforce this area. You don't have to do this if you don't want to. I did this just as a test to see if it hold up better when a do this to the edge. :) Step 6: Sew the long line on the left, top to bottom. Step 7: Open it up. Step 8: With your iron, press the seam open. Step 9: Next, we will start with the bottom hem. Step 10: Fold approximately 1/4 inch. Press with the iron. Step 11: Fold again approximately 1/4 inch. Press with the iron. Step 12: Sew as close to the edge as you can. Step 13: Make sure you line it up nice. :) Step 14: Now go back to your ironing board. Fold again, this time fold it to 1 inch. Press with the iron. Step 15: Sew. I did two lines so it was more decorative on the outside. I did one as close to the edge as I could and the other I just went in a little bit. That was just my preference. You can do just one line if you would like. *REPEAT STEPS 6-15 ON THE OTHER TWO PIECES!!! Step 16: Now we will work on the top. Step 17: Just as you did before in step 10, fold approximately 1/4 inch. Press. Then fold again approximately 1/4 inch (as you did in Step 11). Sew as close to the edge (as you did in Step 12). Step 18: Return to your ironing board and fold again for your elastic. I ended up making this a little smaller than I have shown here. Just make sure you leave enough room for your elastic so it won't roll. After determining how wide to make it, press again. Step 19: Sew along the edge as close as you can. Here, again, I sewed an extra line for decoration. (Once again, I apologize for not getting the picture. I was on a roll. :) *REPEAT STEPS 16-19 ON THE OTHER PIECE!* Step 20: Now lay one of your opened pieces with seams down. Lay the next opened piece on top of that one with seams up. Step 21: Now you will be sewing both of these curves. Step 22: Make sure you start just below where your waist will be. If you start right at the top you will not be able to get your elastic in. Step 23: After you have completed sewing the curves, it's time to start seeing pants. Grab the two middle seams and lift up and shake your fabric a little. Step 24: TA DA...they are starting to look like pants now. :) Step 25: Matching the seams at the crotch, sew the inseam. That is the U between your "legs". Step 26: Measure your elastic the length that you would like. Hook a metal paperclip or a large safety pin on the end of your elastic. Step 27: Carefully feed your elastic into the waist band. Once again, I forgot a picture but I have full confidence you understand what I mean. :) Make sure you don't pull your elastic too :far. I hate having to redo that part. When you get your elastic through, grab the ends of the elastic, go to the sewing machine and sew them together. Situate the fabric to your liking. Step 28: At the side seams, fold fabric to look nice and using a needle and thread, sew your sides shut. As you can tell by the picture, I need a little work in this area. Give me a break. This was my first time. ;) Step 29: And now you have a great pair of lounging pants--that you made---with no pattern! FUN!

It's so easy to spot palazzo pants in the streets these days. I have seen (through the web) bloggers and fashionistas in these pretty styles at various fashion and dressy events. These pants give the wearer a glamour, yet completely effortless look, and of course, they are so comfortable to wear! The superb comfort of palazzo pants makes them a natural choice for the casual look. Look, everyone is working from home, so why choose the rigid jeans or pencil skirt? Just go for a pair of palazzo pants. Palazzo pants are also easy to mix and match. Want to stand out in the crowd? Choose plain palazzos in a vibrant color and wear with a plain contrasting top. Want to give emphasis to the flaring nature of your palazzos, go for a stretch top such as a classic tee, crop top or spaghetti top. The choices are endless, and almost any body type can find suitable palazzo pants for themselves. Now just turn to the pattern today. I am introducing my newest crush - the Laurel palazzo pants. Let's take a look at the technical drawing: The Laurel palazzo pants are created in 10 sizes from XXS to 5XL, so just look for one that fits you best! These pants feature an ankle length, front zipper closure and inseam pockets. It is not a difficult project at all! Of course for those who are dreaded of sewing zippers, I am going to create a version of these pants with elastic waistband (not sure when I will fulfill this promise though, because I am so busy with my own little business). Press towards center. 3. Sewing front zipper: Pin fronts right sides together, sew center front seam from notch mark to 2 cm (3/4in) above inner leg seam. Press the zipper closure one-piece facing onto wrong side. Sew the zipper under the allowance edge (left edge) along the edge. Sew free zipper tape to right edge, to one-piece facing. Fold the button catch along the center, then sew it along upper and lower short edges. Topstitch the zipper closure one-piece facing on the button catch on the left part of the garment. Topstitch the slit right edge catching the facing. 4. Pin one front piece and one back piece right sides together. Sew inner leg seam. Repeat for the other side. 5. Place one pant leg into the other pant leg, right sides together. Sew the center crotch. 6. Sew pocket bags to side edges of front and back correspondingly. Pin Front Pants onto Back Pants and sew from waist to pocket opening, then continue around pocket bag, then continue down to hem. 8. Fold the waistband along the center line, right side together, then sew front ends. Turn the waistband right side out. Sew outer waistband edge to outer upper edge of garment, right sides together, with the extended part for button on left. Turn seam allowance under on the inner side of waistband and topstitch in the ditch along the joining seam from the right side. 9. Make a buttonhole on right end of waistband, sew the button on left. 10. Serge hem, turn under, press and topstitch or slip stitch as desired. Voila! Now you have it - the Laurel palazzo pants! You can magnify this image if viewing it on a mobile phone whilst in a fabric store. Designed for mid weight WOVEN fabrics, the Sidewinder Pants work well in polyester, viscose, tencel, linen and cotton blends. The pattern also has good results in a light weight wool blend suiting for colder temperatures. Keep in mind that a mid weight fabric that drapes well is preferred. If the fabric is too heavy or stiff the back waist gather will not flatter. Patterned fabric - The side seam is a key design feature and important to keep in mind when choosing your fabric. Jacquards, small prints and plain (block colour) are the easiest to sew. Plaids also look good (refer sample images) but are best matched at the side seam (intermediate sewers will find this easy enough and there is a tutorial to help here). Sample images- our grey plaid sample is our stand out favourite and is constructed in a polyester/viscose weave with 2% spandex. The spandex is not essential but the fabric drapes beautifully, moves well and is easy to sew. The Sidewinder pants are designed for non-stretch woven fabrics so we do recommend you consider sewing down a size if you are using fabric with stretch. DIFFICULTY Confident Beginner (2/5). The Sidewinder pants can be sewn with or without an overlocker (serger) to neaten the seams. SIZE & FITTING Please note that if you are in doubt, please choose the size depending on your HIP measurement. Choose your hip measure closest to the size chart in the first instance (and then refer to the finished measure chart for the amount of ease if you are "in between" sizes). These pants have a gathered rear waistband (flat front) so the waist is easily adjustable. The hip measure should decide the size.
