Whew!! The first day has come and gone...actually, the first TWO...we went back on Wednesday - which I actually like because it gives us three "get to know you" days.... BUT, we have been SUPER busy!! Let me show you what we've been up to.... I know..I know...I haven't shown you classroom pix yet - but that's a long post, so I am going to do that one this weekend for you... Anyway... Here's what we did the first day... Since my room is beach themed, I thought, what better "community" activity than to do it with a beach ball?? So we tossed the ball to each other and everyone had to say, "Hi, my name is....and my favorite thing we did this summer was..." and then they wrote their name on the ball. And we hung it from the ceiling - right dab SMACK in the middle. THEN, we did our time capsule... They turned out super cute! (sorry for the wonky pics...I've tried it THREE times -grrr) I just took what I've been doing for years and made them cuter - you know, since I'm addicted to clip art - hehe.. Then, I measured them with a piece of yarn... (yes, I've already gotten permission to post pics of my students from my parents - that goes home in the first day packet) and used that piece of yarn to hold the papers together - and wrote their name on the outside - and I "buried" them (in a drawer) until the end of the year. You can grab them on {THIS} post! AND we've done Reagan's quilt! Yes...there are some missing ones...slackers - haha! AND we've done the glyph I made to go with Corinna's surfer kids she posted. Click {HERE} for her surfer.... and {HERE} for the glyph I made to go with it. My centers are all set for next week... In the Math tubs, I have my School Days centers and some of Reagan's Back to School Math Centers (again...wonky pictures - sorry!) And in my Literacy buckets, I have my School Days Literacy centers.... OH! Forgot to share another form we use in the beginning of the year that I made cuter :) My friend shared this with me years ago and I love having it... It's our parent survey - I keep this in my communication binder in those plastic sleeves...and then keep all the notes they give me behind this paper in the sleeve....and the log form hole punched behind the sleeve. Click {HERE} to get a copy of the survey. And last, but not least... LOOK what the hubs gave me the first day :D He's a firefighter - so they are PERFECT - LOVE THEM!! Hope y'all had/have a great first couple of days! Let me know if you find my freebies useful =) Love hearing from you! Feel free to pin too!
Oh, the first day of school! It's such a fun, but chaotic day. Most of my first days are a little bit of a blur. This is why I have to write very detailed lesson plans or I'll forget everything from that day. I always try to have the same activities for that first day

This was one of those days where I left class knowing that most of my students "got it" It was very effective and fun in the process. The advance work and preparation were worth every minute and, in reality, did not take as many minutes to set up as it may appear. After we completed the obstacle course activity, I had them gather around the "Eternal Life" sign at the end of the obstacle course. We discussed how it will feel to say to the Lord, I fought the good fight, I finished my course, I did my best. 2 Timothy 4:5-8 In Paul's final epistle, he declares: Watch all things Endure afflictions Do the work of an evangelist Make full proof of thy ministry I have fought the good fight I have finished my course I have kept the faith There is a crown of righteousness laid up for me We compared Paul's afflictions and trials to some that we have in our time. We discussed the need for us to fight our own good fight, finish our course, and earn our own crown of righteousness. To reinforce these principles, I set up an obstacle course for my class. Here are the main components of this activity: Objects (obstacles) within a boundary Labels on the objects (Bad thoughts, inappropriate media, bullying, lying, cheating, immodesty, early and serious dating before 16 and/or missions and college, smoking, etc.) 3 Noise makers (see photos-I used plastic bowls and spoons) representing the Noise and Temptation from the world. Have these 3 students stand on one side of the obstacle course and bang on the bowls as the students on the opposite side try to give direction on how to avoid the obstacles and make it through the course. They can also yell out instructions that will lead those on the course to stumble and bump into obstacles. Signs for those on the opposite side that list Good Choices and following the Spirit (daily prayer, scripture, dressing modestly, partaking of the sacrament, keeping the Sabbath day holy, etc) Have these students yell directions that will get those on the course safely to the end without hitting obstacles. Blindfolds for those going through obstacle course ( Due to the number of students in my class,I had 3 students at a time go through but 1 at a time would be better) "Eternal Life" sign at the end of the course Crowns of righteousness at the end of the course Any other objects to make it more difficult (I used pool noodles across chairs) There are a lot of photos below, but each one may answer questions and give a better idea than my written explanation. Labels on each obstacle... More labels... Pool noodles between 2 chairs Sign at end..they had to touch it to complete the course. Noise makers... On your mark, get set, go... I did not make this a race...just like life is not a race against each other and we are all on our own course to return to our Heavenly Father. Each of us will get there in a little bit different time and way. The "good choices" on the side lines giving direction. Finding her way... The voices for good... The noise and temptations of the world... even though there were only 3 of them, they were louder than 10 good voices. At one point, they got up close to someone on the course. I told the students that this is how the temptations of the world work..they get louder and closer, so you need to be prepared to listen and follow the still, steady voices (the Spirit)

Classroom Award Tips and Freebies! Most schools have some sort of award program at the end of the year to recognize students for achieving the Honor Roll, having perfect attendance, or excelling in other areas. Most of my students received an award, but there were always some who didn't receive anything at all. Typically these children were the very ones who had struggled all year and who were facing difficulties and a lack of parent support at home. I couldn't help but feel sorry for them. So I decided that our classroom would have its own awards program and that every student would get some type of award. I was not trying to diminish the importance of the schoolwide awards, but simply to acknowledge that all of my students were special in some way and deserving of some type of award.

I'll be honest I haven't been the best about home church. Especially when it comes to primary for my little Liv! One of my goals this year is to make home church, primary lessons and FHE a priority! My sister and I decided to make a primary/FHE lesson each week! This last week in Come Follow Me-For Primary we focused on Following the Prophet, specifically on Doctrine and Covenants 1. I made cute little handouts and treats for each child. Rice Krispie treat traffic lights with a chocolate topping and red, yellow and green skittles on top. I cut them to be exactly the right size. I place them on a cupcake liner and then in a cellophane bag. Tied it with a few ribbons and attached the little note to tie into the lesson. I know how to do this part! haha Working with Primary age kids I don't know how to do so well. Enter Brittany! The mastermind of Primary! She use to be a Kindergarten teacher, currently a preschool teacher and has had many callings in the primary! She knows what she's doing here! Us adults cut and glued road warning signs on large popsicle sticks. We discussed about how each of them help warn drivers on the road. We had a picture of President Nelson, cut out a Prophet Match Game and Brittany also created a little Follow the Prophet Maze! I'm so excited Brittany thought of a Come Follow me Journal that we can keep all of our lessons in all year long! Liv loved it too! In case your TOTALLY oblivious like me. Here's what we did for the scheduling! Sunday-short introductory lesson, Liv is 3 and loves to talk, we didn't cover much and that's ok! I talked about how we need to follow warning signs from the Prophet just like we need to follow warning signs on the road. And how these warning signs keep us safe and happy! We sang a few songs: Jesus wants me for a Sunbeam, Once there was a Snowman, I am a Child of God, and Follow the Prophet; then I introduced the topic. We played the prophet Match Game and then we watched Sacrament Meeting on Zoom while Liv ate her lunch. On Monday night = Family Home Evening, we talked about the same things we did on Sunday and then did all the activities. We played the Prophet Match Game, a Follow the Prophet game-where you hide the picture of the prophet and then give the child clues to where the Prophet is, like saying if they are getting warm/cold. Liv colored her Come Follow Me front page and did the Follow the Prophet maze. We talked about the signs again and watched THIS video, I added that we need to follow the warning signs from the Prophet just as we need to follow the warning signs in the scriptures. Liv had her treat and loved every minute of it all! I've learned already to keep it as simple and straight forward as possible! I've also learned that Liv loved every minute we were "doing church" together and it is completely worth it! So here's to hoping for many more lessons in 2021! Brittany was kind enough to give us the files she put together. You can find most of the printables HERE! You can find the Follow the Prophet handout tag HERE!

Time to be a little honest here. In this space I like to write about our learning adventures at home, the fun times, and the joyous moments with my little ones. But, truth be told, things aren't always peachy. In fact, for awhile last year, things were flat out terrible. My busy boys were simply

You Can Leave Your Hat On... ... I believe he sang, Joe Cocker, all those years ago... And here, in my favourite garden, a hat may be advisable to shield you from the sun, but on some days you need not worry about any other clothing, as The Naked Gardeners welcome visitors in their birthday costumes on certain dates throughout the season... However, on Friday last week when I revisited Abbey House Gardens in Malmesbury, it was a normal day, where the only nudity on display was offered by a few statues in the glorious, creative and inventive gardens that constitute this green gem. The photo above was taken from the tiny island in the river, a perfect spot from which to admire the majestic backside (no pun intended!) of the house. I love the contrast of the wilder, "junglier" area down by the river, after having admired the slightly more formal garden rooms in front of the house. The sun loungers looked very appealing on this sunny day, as did a game of chess... The front of the house is covered in an array of gorgeous green leaves and more colourful floral phenomena... And when we sat down for a drink in the café by the koi carp pond, Robbie came to say hello. Well, Robbie admittedly seemed more interested in the biscuits my fellow garden admirers were munching than in any real bird-human bonding, but even so, I fell in love with this little feathery fellow! Now look at those curves! I LOVE this section of the garden, with the funky gigantic green head, the lollipop trees and all the shaped box hedges and trees...! Gorgeous giant poppies, red, pink and white, all looking as if made of silky paper... Now, I am not the kind of girl who forces people to do things, nor do I tend to give unsolicited advice to my friends, but I may just have to make an exception here... You simply HAVE to visit this garden one day! It is a very special place and if you do not find at least one spot in the five acres of green loveliness that makes you weak at the knees or at least filled with a desire to plant your bottom on the lawn and just be for a moment, soaking up the view from your tranquil spot, well, then I am not sure what to say! There are loads more photos from this garden under the heading Abbey House Gardens in my Categories - please feel free to browse them should you like to see more. Blog posts are not exactly bombarding your screens from The Swenglish Home at the moment. Summer hibernation has set in, I am afraid, and I spend more hours outdoors than in at the moment, far, far away from screens and keyboards. I hope you are also enjoying the warmer season. A special thank you to all of your who still pop in to visit my quasi-dormant corner of the blog world, and a special-special thank you for kind comments! With much love, Helena
