What new crafts / skills / techniques will you learn this year? An oldie but goody to bring in the new year!
I know its late but I needed to express my love still <3 (Edit: poem by Shel Silverstein)
I have a new freebie set ready this week! This set has three puzzles all about bunnies! Not quite in time for Easter, but it's generic enough for any time of the year. One puzzle is a maze in which solvers have to help the mommy bunny gather up her baby bunnies from around the garden. Another puzzle teaches students about bunny related words while they find them in a word search. And the last puzzle challenges students to help a bunny across a river to find her pile of veggies! This puzzle is a new puzzle for me, and I'm excited about it! The solvers has to follow a pattern of shapes, hopping along each shape 'stepping stone', to get to the other side. My kids and I enjoyed doing these! (You can find more of these puzzles in my All About Shapes puzzle pack too!) All About Shapes is available in my TpT store for $4.00 and contains 20 puzzles for young solvers. These puzzles are geared towards kindergarteners and first graders, but pre-schoolers should be able to handle many of these puzzles with help from their parents. This pack contains 3 dot-to-dots, 3 river crossings, 3 mazes, 3 word searches, 4 coloring pages, 2 counting riddles, a sudoku, and a crossword! It's packed with fun ways to practice shape recognition and even learn some new shapes! You can download the Cub Corner or purchase All About Shapes at my TpT store! UPDATE: I no longer have the Cub Corner sets in my store. Just click on the picture to download. Also, the All About Shapes set has been retired, so you can download a free copy by clicking on that picture. Enjoy!
WHAT YOU WANT vs. WHAT YOU NEED What You Want 1. To never feel anxious about my partner taking distance 2. Not having to ask for I need
Happy Sunday! Common Core math has been a big shift from what many educators and parents have been used to in the past. I have personally embraced the shift towards a deeper understanding of mathematical practices and welcome the shift towards assisting students to build a strong number sense. As a student, I could have benefitted from this style of teaching. I was one of the students that wanted to know "why" when learning mathematical algorithms. My district has adopted the Engage New York curriculum and it has been interesting to see how one particular curriculum has been designed to meet the Common Core standards. I see both positives and areas for improvement with the program. I have really enjoyed the engagement pieces of the program. There are many fun games and activities designed to engage students and practice skills. For some areas of the program I have seen a need for additional practice of skills. To meet my students' needs I have created supplementary materials and have incorporated these materials into my daily routine, as necessary. I strive to create lessons that incorporate a hands-on and interactive component. I have created many cut and paste activities to meet the Common Core standards and they have been very engaging and helpful for my students. When I show my students the cut and paste activities there is always an audible "Yay!" from the children. Check out some of the activities below! There is an image that I first encountered on Twitter that instantly captivated me: “If only our eyes saw souls instead of bodies, how very different our ideals of beauty would be.” If only… Here is another image that I discovered on Pinterest: “How others see you is not important. How you see yourself means everything." And while I love the potential that this image represents, I also recognize the challenges. This could represent pushing ourselves father than we are truly capable. This could mean giving in to the dangers of eating disorders or other self-injurious behaviors because we are never satisfied with what we see... Yet, when we combine the two images and teach our children and ourselves to see souls and not physical attributes, how stunning the potential. And finally, there is this image: "See the able, not the label." How might these images help you lift the value of inclusion? 8 Effective Study Tips For AsLike many students, I do not have photographic memory and need to study hard and effectively to be successful in school. The study tips listed below has allowed me to ace classes and exams over the years and I hope that they will help my fellow students out there in the world.1. Make the material personally meaningfulWrite your notes in your own words and form various cue associations, such as images and experiences. Rote memorization can only go so far. 2. Use mnemonic devices & diagramsCreate a story involving large chunks of information or items or separate them into acronyms (Be as funny or as crude as you would like). For information that is hard to describe, try drawing diagrams and be creative with color coding to help you visualize. 3. Fill out or make the study guide. If a professor creates a study guide for you, trust me on this and fill it out the best you can. However, if they do not provide one, create your own. This requires you to go through your notes, consolidate them, and organize them in a way that you understand which is very valuable. 4. Test your knowledge. You can ace your exams by strengthening your brain to retain information. By practicing and self-testing, you will know the material by the exam days. Create flashcards, whether tangible or online (e.g. www.quizlet.com), and go over them regularly. They are excellent memory reinforcement tools and sites can offer games to help you stay engaged. Don't stress and cram the night before an exam. However, there is nothing wrong with light refreshers of the material.5. Minimize interferenceIt is very important to know the best environment that you can study in. Do you study better in a noisy or quiet place? Can you focus better with music on? Do you get distracted by the internet and social media? If distracted by sites, use a web extension that can block sites for a certain amount of hours. Also, put away your phone!!6. Find the best way YOU learn.I personally know that I learn better when I read and write the material I want to memorize over and over again. However, for my study buddy, she needs to hear and repeat material out loud as an auditory learner. Find out what your learning style is through the above diagram or the VARK Questionnaire (http://vark-learn.com/). 7. Take breaksOverworking your brain limits absorption of information. Taking breaks helps destress and focus. This does not mean for an hour or more, but take at least 15 minute breaks in between long study sessions. Eat some snacks and drink some water during this time.Another recommendation is using the Pomodoro technique, which is a timer that breaks down productivity into intervals and short breaks. There are various online sites and apps that offer this or something similar. 8. Get a study buddyIt's better to suffer together. Just kidding. Having a friend or classmate to study with can help you split up work or simply provide someone to review the material with. Additionally, they can explain information that you may not understand thoroughly and vice versa.
