For a list of the Alumni Blogs, see the end of the post. I created a mini book for my project this month. I have a little tutorial AND a "show-off" video for you! This adorable little mini album is 4 1/2" tall and 3 1/2" wide, with a 1 3/16" spine. I love the traditional colors of the Festive Holly Paper Collection, plus I just love cardinals! I also used a bit of paper from the Sparkling Poinsettia Paper Collection, which is an older collection, but has the same traditional color scheme. I created three page sets for this little mini. Each page set has an accordion fold section, a flip page, and a pocket page. It is a lot packed into such a small space! The pages are perfect for wallet-sized photos and small notes. The pages are also great for showcasing the beautiful images of the collections. If you want to see every page in the book, please check out the video below. TUTORIAL: Here is a little tutorial for making your own mini. This is a very quick-to-make project! Cut two pieces of heavy-weight chipboard to 4 1/2" x 3 1/2". Cut a piece for the spine to 4 1/2" x 1 1/2". (The spine ended up being a bit too wide, so you could make the spine a bit narrower.) Cut black cardstock to 6 1/2" x 10 1/2" and attach the chipboard to the center, making sure to have 1/8" of space between each cover and the spine. Angle the corners as shown. Attach double-sided tape to the flaps and secure. Create a hinge system using the accordion fold method. Cut black cardstock to 4" x 6". Score at 1", 1 1/2", 2", 2 1/2", 3", 3 1/2", 4", 4 1/2", 5". Fold on all score lines in a valley-mountain fold pattern. Turn the hinge system over and place adhesive between the 2nd, 5th, and 8th sections, as shown. Adhere the sections together to form the hinges. Place adhesive over the back of the hinge system. Attach the hinge system to the spine. Place double-sided tape to the front and back of each hinge. Create three page sets, one for each hinge. Each set will have a pocket, an accordion book, and a flip page. Create the pocket pages first, as they will attach to the hinges. Cut three piece of black cardstock to 4 1/8" x 6 1/4". Score at 3 1/8" on the long side. Fold on the score lines and burnish. Place double-sided tape at the bottom of the left page. Do not glue closed yet! Attach the open end of one of the pages to one of the hinges and secure. Then fold the page over the hinge and secure the bottom and the other side, forming a pocket. The pocket will accommodate one of the Graphic 45 ATC tag. Repeat the process with all three hinges. Create an accordion fold book for each page. Cut black cardstock to 4 1/8" x 9. Score on the long side at 1/2", 3 1/2", and 6". accordion fold and burnish the folds. Place double-sided adhesive on the 1/2" flap. Attach the accordion fold to the first pocket page by the 1/2" flap. Round the corners of the 2 1/2" wide section. Repeat for each pocket page/hinge in the mini. You will have three accordion fold sections in total. Burnish all score lines to make sure the pages fold easily. Create three flip pages. Cut black cardstock to 4" x 2 3/4". Score a 1/2" flap at the top of the panel. Round the bottom corners. Chose one panel of each page set to add the flip page. Simply adhere to the page by the 1/2" flap. Decorate the pages as desired. Once you have all of your pages attached to the book, decorate as desired. Thanks for hopping by! Hop on over to Emily Niehaus' Blog next. I am so in love with this die, I have adhere the die cut adhere on green cardstock which I hand cut to match with this oval shape. Then I cut plenty of these beautiful fuchsia flowers and leaves, shaped them and created this beautiful flower cluster on one side of the card. Then finished with some flat back pearls, Flower stamens and lace. I so enjoyed this project and you will see some more project coming up using this beautiful collection. Thanks for stopping by.
4th graders just finished a lesson about totem poles. Students learned about the significance of totem poles and that they were (and still are) made by native tribes who lived in the Pacific Northwest region of North America. The big word for this project was stylize. We learned that some artists stylize their work by changing shapes, colors, etc. in order to give their work their own personal touch. Each student created one stylized animal in the style of a real totem pole. (There are some great resources on totem pole parts online here. Unfortunately, I didn't find this until we were almost done with the project!) In the past, I had kids paint the finished product, but I decided to try collage this year after seeing an example from another blog last year. I really like how clean the collage is. More importantly, the students were more successful using collage. My lesson plan can be found here. My keynote for this lesson is here. A PDF version of my keynote can be downloaded here. Feel free to use or modify for your own room!
Dear All, Surprise....This product will be a really sweet surprise for Album makers. Heartfelt Creations came up with really convenient ...
The girls finally got to make their wigwams. We followed the directions in the MFW teacher manual and they came out so realistic. They used cut-up cereal boxes for the frame and brown construction paper for the "shingles." After gluing on the shingles, we covered the entire outside with white glue. When they dried the girls cut smoke holes in the top. They looked and felt much like real bark and are very sturdy. Both of the girls added their own accessories. Emily made hers from clay and Katie used cardboard and paper. Very creative! Squanto, Friend of the Pilgrims really touched Katie's heart. Many nights, she wanted me to keep reading so she could hear what happened next. She was very about Squanto's family dying before he finally returned to his village. But she perked up when she learned that Squanto really helped the Pilgrims and considered them his new family. We all had a great discussion about how Squanto's life was in God's hands. Had it not been for the English keeping him as a slave and his inability to return to America, Squanto would most likely have died with the rest of his tribe long before the Pilgrims landed on American soil. Furthermore, Squanto shows us that people of diverse backgrounds can live in peace and harmony and can teach one another many useful things, even how to plant corn and catch fish! Almost Home is another great book based on the lives of those who journeyed across the Atlantic on the Mayflower. I particularly love how well the story captures living history in great detail. And the glossary in the back is helpful for some period terms that we didn't know. You may know what a coif is, but do you know what a trencher is? Hmmm... To say that Emily doesn't like English is an understatement! It's not my strong suit either. I scored well in English when I was in school, but I remember very little of it. I'm not the most versed writer and I don't have a broad vocabulary, but that doesn't stop me from writing or talking. Much is learned by just reading. Even so, I realize that there are requirements to meet and certain things should be learned, even when they seem boring and useless. So, we carry on grudgingly, trying to learn each step of the way. And I'm right there alongside Emily, learning with her. In science, we learned more about mammals. We covered monkeys, apes, elephants, leopards, whales, and other mammals similar to all those. We learned about various ways that people tried to support the theory of evolution and that all have been disproved. I'm thinking that field trip to the zoo is in order soon. :) We took Thursday off. My ladies Bible study started this week, which meets on Thursday mornings. Typically, I would require the kids to do school work during that time. But we've been working so hard and were a little ahead, so I was going to just let them play. It turned out, a lady at church needed help organizing toys in one of the children's rooms, so the girls spent most of their time doing that. We socialized afterwards and ran a couple of errands, so we didn't get home until about 3:00. On most Thursday afternoons we will do some school work, unless we go on a field trip or need to run errands. Our leader asked if Emily could help out with the little kids during Bible study, starting next week, and wants to pay her! I told her I'm fine with it and I think it will be good for her. We had a bit of excitement on Friday. I woke up super early - 6:00 AM, which is way early for me! I'm a night owl, not a morning dove. I watched a movie and dozed off for about an hour after. so we were just getting started on school around 10:30 or so. That's about the time when Katie said "why is the lid off Spotty's tank?" (Spotty is our firebelly toad.) I thought she was joking until I looked over and saw the lid sitting on the table. I asked her if the frog was inside. She looked and frantically said "no" and began crying hysterically. I added fresh water to the tank the night before and forgot to put the lid back on! Oops!!! My stomach started turning. It's amazing how huge our house seemed at that moment! I looked in every corner of the kitchen/dining area first, since that's where Spotty's tank is. No luck. We got a flashlight and started looking under all the furniture in the living room. We found other things, but not the frog. Katie was still crying so I stopped, put my hands on her shoulders, told her to calm down, and said "let's pray." In less than five minutes, the frog was spotted in the kitchen! It truly was a miracle! We all took a moment to give thanks to God for allowing us to find Spotty so quickly. Hallelujah! Linked up with Weekly Wrap-Up

You might like to watch this video with Emma Lou on working with the Flipfold Inserts https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wxX94X84kUo . I decided on the Flipfold Insert I wanted to use and thought about the way I wanted it to come together. I began by deciding where I wanted the magnets to hold it closed and glued the magnets down using the Designer Dries Clear Glue. I cut the two pieces of the paper collection to fit the top of the Flipfold and then used the dies to cut the paper so it matched the scallops in the piece. Next cover all the areas inside and out of all the folds and then I began to add the waterfall pages to the album. I used two rows of Scor-Tape to each one because I wanted that to be strong so they could withstand a lot of use. I did not do a lot of decorating on the waterfall because I didn’t want the extra thickness and I also wanted to leave it for photos and journaling. I did find there is a lot of real estate in a small foot print. I made pockets for the inside of the front panels using black cardstock and the Fleur Borders and Pockets Die then I made tags to fit in them. One of the tags has a place to tie a string so I used the metallic string for that. The final decorating done on the inside of the card is on the front of the fold down page and I made a pocket there and used the Border Basics Dies to add more interest. I also used the bling on a string to add some interest. I also cut out a tag from the paper collection and glued it to the pocket. I made a large tag for the pocket and used the Ornate Borders and Pockets die to top it off. I also glued some bling on a string down the left side of the tag. Now that the inside of the album is finished it is time to decorate the outside. I stamped, cut out and colored the cute little darling, fence, flowers, leaves and those adorable birds using watercolor paper. Everything is colored with Memento ink and Distress Inks and a brush. Once dry I added some glitter to to the fairy wings. I used dimensional tape behind the birds to make them look fat and then I added glitter here and there just for some interest. Shape the flowers and add the prills to the centers. Arrange everything the way you like it and glue it all down. The album is ready to go.
Art to Remember is scheduled to ship out to Bradley this Monday, November 18th and we should receive all the art by that Wednesday. My goal is to have all students bring home their keepsakes by Tuesday, November 26th. Kindergarten students created a mixed media art project this week to celebrate Native American Heritage month. The tepees were made with construction paper, markers, and Popsicle sticks and the backgrounds were painted. 1st grade students are creating 3d tepees and will be completing them soon. We are using brown lunch bags to create the tepees. 2nd grade students also created art to celebrate Native American Heritage month. This project was a mixed media project. We used brown butcher paper, markers, construction paper, and beans. The main focus of this lesson was on symbols. We discussed how Native American Indians drew pictures to tell stories. 2nd graders also made these very cool looking birch trees. We used a technique called masking and used watercolor paint. We added tree shadows to add a nice finishing touch. Students had the choice of either a blue sky or a sunset sky. These birch tree forest turned out wonderful! 3rd graders had fun being "mad scientist" and creatied their own science lab. First we drew our science labs and then painted them... but in a different way. Students learned a new technique - blowing on wet paint. This technique gave the appearance of explosions and helped to make their science labs look as tho a real mad scientist had created it. 4th grade students are finishing their Leaf project and should have them completed by next week. 5th graders are working on different projects at this time. I've learned that all my classes work at different speeds and trying to keep them all on the same schedule is impossible. My goal was to have all students start on their "Fall Harvest" art last week, but we still have many students working on completing their Modigliani self portrait. Hopefully by the first few weeks of December, they will all be caught up and working on the same project. For those students who have started on their "Fall Harvest" art, they are half was complete.

This week marks the beginning of Spring! Though there is nothing at all spring like around these parts yet. We have snow on top of our snow, and ice below that. This has been one long winter. But it will end. One day we will wake up and it will not look quite so white
We do this every year... and it's always a huge mess. one year my son kept cutting gun shapes and went around and shot us... but this year I thought we could try some patterns... first:

I have tried my best to give each and every detail of under water corals, shells and fishes. I have started by making handmade shadowbox. I have colored it with blue acrylic color. On the base I colored some sandy look and earth under water. Here in below picture I have created cute little octopus, big one and little one. And also one fish. here some corals which are made using peach and maroon 3mm quilling strips with some grass. These are cute three gold fishes with black strips. Here are the group of some tiny blue fishes moving here and there I created Corals with flesh tint color strip and purple strip. Also some shells with pearl in side it. One Red Star Fish. Some watery Stones in circular shape using black and off white strips. some shells at the bottom. Here also some corals with Orange , Yellow strips. And some grass off course. I pasted some fringe flowers between grass at right side. Again some shells with pearl. here is a view of half portion of my creation. I also created cute Red Clown fish. Full view Hope you all will like my effort. Please comment. i am attaching this post for Indian quilling Challenge group No. 30
Somewhere in my delusional mind, I decided I could someday complete a ridiculously large and complicated paper-pieced quilt that I saw in a book and fell in love with. The book is “A Paper Pi…
Over the years I've had this blog, my various posts about 4th grade wampum belt weaving project, using pony beads, have been among my most popular. You can find these posts here, here, here, here, and here. Yup, that's 5 different posts, some with samples, and some with instructions. Often, people have landed at one of these posts via Pinterest, where the project has been shared many times and are therefore missing the whole story, since some of the posts are sequential. So I've give you links to them all so you can find any info you could possibly want, I hope. I've had numerous requests for the planning graph that we used for designing the wampum belts (that you see in these photos), and until now, I've been unable to oblige. When I retired, I left all the files and copies with my replacement. But I've finally snagged a copy, and scanned it, and you can now find a link to it in my Document Weblinks tab on the top of the blog. Or if you want even a more direct path to the doc, here's a direct link to it! Poof! It's yours! Feel free to copy it, or as an idea how to make your own. My students used them to plan their design, to count how many of each color bead they needed, and to follow the pattern row by row when weaving. There's potentially a lot of math in there for those of you who struggle to incorporate math into your curriculum! Have fun!!
