Wow...my hat goes off to those of you who blogged regularly throughout your first week back to school. I literally was lucky to make it home without falling asleep at the wheel! Teaching procedures to 8th graders is SO much easier than teaching them to 6th graders. In fact, since I am new to the school, many of them were super helpful in telling me how things are done there and so on. The bell schedule is a little different than the one I was on last year, so I have new dismissal times to memorize. I would just ask my kids how much time is left and wouldn't you know...most of them ACTUALLY know how to read a clock!? Amazing. I was so impressed with how my students behaved all week. These are some of the most polite kids I have ever taught. My classes are widely diverse, but the kids don't even acknowledge it, which is awesome. I am so privileged and blessed to have these kiddos to call my own. After our first day of getting to know you activities (I actually saw all of my classes for about 30 minutes a piece that 1st day!), I knew we were ready for team building on day 2. I had already gone over my syllabus on the first day which I hadn't ever done before, but I felt like I could since I didn't have to give a school tour, etc. I am the one who needed the school tour! (True story...my kids walked me down to the textbook room so that I could issue them textbooks!) I know I have COMPLETELY rambled, so let me get right to it! I read about The Marshmallow Challenge earlier this summer and KNEW that I wanted to try it in my class! If you want to read more about The Marshmallow Challenge, click here. I spent about $10 on supplies for 6 classes which equates to about $0.06 per student. I am so willing to spend that on any lesson that students are going to get something out of. Here is the basic challenge: Students use the following materials: 20 pieces of spaghetti 1 yard of tape 1 yard of string and 1 marshmallow I also include scissors for easy cutting The challenge is that students must create the tallest freestanding structure out of these materials with the marshmallow on top--in 18 minutes or less. It is super easy to do this, but the marshmallow is the key to keeping it upright. Many students build the structure as tall as they can and then put the marshmallow on top...and then watch it collapse before their eyes. We all think of marshmallows as light, airy, and fluffy, but in this challenge, they might as well weigh as much as a brick! I did have several groups that were successful, but sometimes I was too excited that I forgot to take a picture! The tallest one was in 7th period and it was 22 inches. I did not let the students tape anything to the desks and that is what was harder as well. Here are some of the successful groups: This was the first one done in 1st period, and they were so proud. They had started doing some large contraption that of course fell right over after putting the marshmallow on top. This must have been Plan B. Or Plan E. Either way, they were only 1 of 2 groups that were successful in that class! This was the winner in 1st period at 18.75 inches. They said their inspiration was the Eiffel Tower! I was so shocked that this one stayed up! This one was the 3rd period winner. This was the winner in 7th period and overall! 22 inches...super proud of these boys! I can't wait to see what else I can throw at these kids to do this year. They are all begging me to do this again so that they can fix their mistakes--I promised that we would do it in the spring to see how much they had improved! The best part was the recap at the end of the challenge where we discussed that most everything in life has a "marshmallow aspect" to it where it kind of throws a wrench in the plans and how we can overcome it in math. Did I mention I love my kids?!? If you made it this far in my post...thank you! If you are looking for an easy way to incorporate this into your classroom without much setup, you might be interested in this product that can be found in my TPT store: Looking for more Back to School activities to use in your math class? Do you have a special, single, skein of yarn that you’ve been reluctant to make socks out of, and are super-keen on making something that you could wear to show it off instead? When I recently inherited some yarn from my sister (which fortuitously turned out to be 100g in weight), I decided to make this! There are two variations on the pattern - one with a plain stockinette body (the black bolero), and the other with a k1, p1 ribbing (the red bolero). I think that given some measurements, it should fit almost anyone. If you’re making it for a child, they’d be able to wear it for years to come too. :) I’ve since updated the pattern. Please download version 2, and feel free to contact me with any questions or errors in the pattern!

Practice place value with this quick, easy and super-fun Cat's Hat, place value mat game. Teacher Comments: “Fun!” “ Great resource to help kids understand place value!" “Very creative. A cute way to review.” "My firsties LOVED making these hats!" Students take turns calling out a 2 or 3-digit number. Using a dry erase marker, students write the number on the hat brim and then place that many number tiles in the appropriate columns. This is also a quick and simple way to whole-group assess. When students have filled in their mat, they raise their hand. You can see at a glance who is having difficulty. The hat and number tiles come in a large, full-page size, as well as a smaller, 2-on-a-page pattern to conserve paper. I’ve also included a 3D “Cat in the Hat” place value craftivity, that makes an interesting manipulative for an independent center, assessing, or playing a game with a partner. Teacher Comments: “It's a great way for my 2nd graders to practice place value!" "This was so easy to use with my first graders!" "This was an amazing product!” “My class loved using these." I’m Diane from Teach With Me, hoping a Seuss hat helps make practicing place value extra fun. For more Seuss Themed Activities, click on the link. Two years ago, I published my first pattern ever : the Alaska hat. Recently, I felt like this tree pattern that I had created a while ago had to be on a sweater. So here we are! Alaska is a seamless top down raglan sweater, with a cropped length and fitted 7/8 sleeves. First, you’ll knit the top part of the raglan back and forth. Then, you’ll knit speedy stockinette in the round for the most part of the sweater. You’ll reach the trees so quickly you won’t believe it! This sweater is easily adaptable if you wish to add length to the sleeves and body. Sizes XS, S, M, L, XL, 2XL, 3XL, 4XL Finished bust circumference : (30.5”, 35”, 39.25”, 43.5”, 48”, 52.5”, 57”, 61”) // (76, 89, 99, 109, 122, 132, 145, 157) cm. Who says wristwarmers or fingerless gloves need to be knit? I've been knitting a few pairs of wristwarmers/fingerless gloves (whatever you like to call them) for xmas pressies and the other day I got to thinking that it would be way faster to just sew a pair up. So this sleep deprived mama said to
the curly bucket hat in the 90ies was my absolute favorite as a kid and I really don’t feel like I’m too grown up to wear my own hand knitted version! even more because, it is both soft, cool and warm - what's not to like! hopefully you'll knit along too :)))deima’s bucket hat is knitted top down. when the hat itself is knitted, it is closed off and stitches are collected up to the shade. it is quite beginner friendly and i've tried to explain it as thoroughly as possible. however, the boucle yarn can be a bit tricky, but if you're up for it - then go for it! yarn: 2 strands of alpaca bouclé from drops (shown in color 7402 og 0602)gauge: 14 stitches x 20 rows stockinette stitches = 10 cm x 10 cm on needle 5 mm - US 8.needle size: 5 mm - US 8 (80 cm round needles)size: onesizemeasurements: the circumference of the hat measures 50 cm, but it will fit anything from size 54-58 (european hat sizes). If you have a smaller/bigger headsize, you can add/substrackt a few increases on the last round when you knit.yarn total: 2 skeins of alpaca bouclé from drops yarn options: kremke’s bouclé (note, this type is thinner, but softer - you can knit the hat with 2 strands held together with 1 strand of alpaca bouclé from drops, for a more chunky winter warm hat) happy knitting! the pattern is digital and will be sent to your e-mail as a pdf-file.

This is what I teach my kindergartener's their first week in art. The cap is the hat that keeps the ink in. If we take it off, it dries up. Pattern now in English, French and German. French and German patterns have been translated by professional translators. A relaxed sweater for wearing whenever, wherever. I designed this sweater for my husband, and now I rarely see him in anything else at the weekends… I think that means he likes it, but I asked him why he’s wearing it so much. He told me it was smart, but not too smart, it fitted well and it was super comfortable. Sounds like we’re both happy. These are the key features that make this sweater work: The deep textured panel adds visual interest and draws attention to the upper body. The sleeves are shaped for a comfortable and neat finish. The neckline is slightly loose to make sure the sweater isn’t constraining. The sweater is seamed to give structure and a great fit at the shoulder and armhole. Heavy worsted or aran weight yarn can be used. All measurements are given in imperial and in metric. The instructions are fully written out, and there is an additional chart for the textured stitch. My testers think this pattern is suitable for an advanced beginner or intermediate knitter. You need to be able to cast on, bind off, knit, purl, k2tog, ssk, pick up stitches for the neckband and sew a seam. Actual Chest Measurements: 37½ (39½, 41½, 43, 45, 47, 49, 51) in/95 (100, 105, 110, 115, 120, 125, 130) cm. This sweater is designed to fit with 2 – 4in/5 – 10cm positive ease, choose a size that is 2 – 4in/5 – 10cm larger than the wearer’s chest measurement. Have you ever been invited to take a hike up a mountain and wondered why you would do it, until you reach the top, and then realize it was all worth it for the view? This design is sort of like that. You knit what seems to be an ordinary top down pattern with a couple of extra increases and decreases, and some garter stitch details along the way, all the while quite possibly wondering what you are doing them for. But once you bind off and try it on, you see the effect that those extra little steps have had. The result is a simple and flattering pullover; one which has details that give you pause when you look in the mirror and make you appreciate the view! Intended to fit with approximately 2-3 inches of positive ease at the bust. Shown here with about 6 inches ease for a more oversized fit. Use any worsted weight yarn that gives you the correct gauge!
