If there’s an opportunity for a secret room or hidden feature in a home, I take full advantage. If you’ve watched my show or follow me on Instagram, you might have caught on to the fact that I’m all about these special projects. Why not have some fun with the place you spend the most time in? My goal is to always add fun, functional, and unique features into a home. When it comes to #BuildYourHappy, it’s all about asking yourself what will make you smile…and that’s the best place to start. There've been many projects over the years, and today I’m sharing a handful of my favorite hidden projects that make me happy. So whether you’re gathering inspiration or in the middle of working on your own special home project, I hope these spark joy in one way or another. 1 | Hidden Pantry [% article-gallery image_1:https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1656/6339/files/Jasmines-Favorite-Secret-Rooms-Over-the-Years-Jasmine-by-pantry.jpg?v=1687999007 %] [% article-gallery image_1:https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1656/6339/files/Jasmines-Favorite-Secret-Rooms-Over-the-Years-Jasmine-in-pantry.jpg?v=1687999007 %] This secret pantry seen in Season 3, Episode 1 of “HELP! I Wrecked My House” will forever be a favorite. I love the styled shelves on the exterior of the door, and the spacious pantry once pushing it open. Instead of a standard pantry door, the shelves add a place for decor and storage. We were also able to make this pantry larger by taking space from the neighboring coat closet! 2 | Hidden Desk [% article-gallery image_1:https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1656/6339/files/Jasmines-Favorite-Secret-Rooms-Over-the-Years-kids-paintings.jpg?v=1687999007 %] [% article-gallery image_1:https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1656/6339/files/Jasmines-Favorite-Secret-Rooms-Over-the-Years-Secret-Chairs.jpg?v=1687999007 %] I’m pretty proud of this one! From first glance, you wouldn’t think this is a desk, it simply looks like a piece of furniture that helps store and organize supplies, books, and crafts, right?! But the secret is, I had this custom built to create a hidden desk. The desk doesn’t take away from the dining room area, instead it creatively saves space. After the kiddos are done with homework or art projects, the family is able to push the chairs back in for that seamless, clean look once again. 3 | Hidden Nightstands [% article-gallery image_1:https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1656/6339/files/Jasmines-Favorite-Secret-Rooms-Over-the-Years-Jasmine-in-front-of-cabinet.jpg?v=1687999007 image_2:https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1656/6339/files/Jasmines-Favorite-Secret-Rooms-Over-the-Years-Jasmine-in-front-of-cabinet-open-drawer.jpg?v=1687999007%] The hidden projects continue! In Season 3, Episode 9 of “HELP! I Wrecked My House”, I incorporated a Murphy bed into an office. While that cleared up a lot of space in the room, I wanted something more. I decided on custom built-ins installed onto each side of the bed that created both a nightstand and small closet. You would never know these are here whether the bed is up or down. 4 | Hidden Pool Table [% article-gallery image_1:https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1656/6339/files/Jasmines-Favorite-Secret-Rooms-Over-the-Years-Jasmine-by-Table.jpg?v=1687999007 %] [% article-gallery image_1:https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1656/6339/files/Jasmines-Favorite-Secret-Rooms-Over-the-Years-secret-pool-table.jpg?v=1687999007 %] Have you ever seen a dining room table that doubles as a pool table?! For a family of game-night lovers, I had to make this work. So when it’s time for dinner and hosting guests, the dining table exists, and when it’s time for some fun and friendly competition, the top of the table comes off to showcase the full-sized pool table. Not to mention, the pool sticks and billiard balls are hidden in the dining room bench. Pretty cool if I do say so myself. 5 | Hidden Play Area [% article-gallery image_1:https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1656/6339/files/Jasmines-Favorite-Secret-Rooms-Over-the-Years-Countertop.jpg?v=1687999007 %] [% article-gallery image_1:https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1656/6339/files/Jasmines-Favorite-Secret-Rooms-Over-the-Years-Jasmine-in-Cabinet-Room.jpg?v=1687999007 %] I like to think if I would’ve loved something as a child, then it’s totally worth incorporating into a home. This hidden play area is featured under a kitchen island, because, why not?! It’s a creative space for the kids to hang out, imagine, and create. I love this idea to save space but still have a dedicated space to play. [% article-gallery image_1:https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1656/6339/files/Jasmines-Favorite-Secret-Rooms-Over-the-Years-Cabinet-Room.jpg?v=1687999007 %] 6 | Hidden TV [% article-gallery image_1:https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1656/6339/files/Jasmines-Favorite-Secret-Rooms-Over-the-Years-Jasmine-looking-at-fireplace.jpg?v=1687999007 %] [% article-gallery image_1:https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1656/6339/files/Jasmines-Favorite-Secret-Rooms-Over-the-Years-Fireplace.jpg?v=1687999007 %] Sometimes you don’t want the TV to be the focal point of a room, I get it! On Season 2, Episode 3 of “HELP! I Wrecked My House”, this custom hidden TV was the star of the show. While I do love and utilize Frame TVs in projects, this takes it to the next level. Controlled by a remote, the artwork moves up and down covering the TV when it’s not being used. 7 | Hidden Playroom [% article-gallery image_1:https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1656/6339/files/Jasmines-Favorite-Secret-Rooms-Over-the-Years-hazel-in-secret-room.jpg?v=1687999007 %] [% article-gallery image_1:https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1656/6339/files/Jasmines-Favorite-Secret-Rooms-Over-the-Years-hazel-sitting-in-secret-room-painting.jpg?v=1687999006 %] In one of my more recent projects, Camp Roth, I created a secret playroom in our basement. Removing the back of the dresser, I utilized the space under the staircase to create Hazel’s dream play area. So from the outside, you would never know there’s an entire room in here! This is definitely something my family and friends will enjoy and remember about our home. Are you looking to create your own secret room or hidden feature in your home? Take Home Folders/Homework Folders... Let's talk about how to set up, label, organize, and manage Take Home Folders. Getting my folders set up is always a huge priority during summer break. I NEVER wait for students to bring their supplies to school on Meet the Teacher night because I want to have my folders set up and ready to go for the first week of school. I also want all students to have THE SAME FOLDER. I always choose green for my Take Home Folders because green means go. These are the only folders that go home. All the other folders stay at school. If you start shopping the Back to School sales in July, you can get a class set of folders for a couple bucks. In fact, do yourself a favor, and buy about 10-15 extra folders because undoubtedly you will get a few new students during the year or some folders will be lost or damaged. Some years I've bought the cheap folders (without the prongs) and laminated them. I used an X-Acto knife to slice open the pocket openings. This worked fine, but I would usually replace the entire class set around Christmas. Other years, I've found awesome deals on the poly/plastic/vinyl thick, sturdy folders. Those really hold up a lot better in my opinion. Maybe your principal will even splurge and buy a class set of nice folders for you?!?! ::Fingers crossed:: Once you've found a class set of awesome folders, it's time to get them labeled. I put the kiddos name (and number) on the front of the folder. If you don't have your class list yet, just skip this step. On the inside of the folder, I put two sticker labels. The left side says “Keep at Home” and the right pocket says “Return to School.” Print these on 2x4 inch standard shipping labels. On the back of the folder, I have a label with my name and room number on it incase another teacher or student finds it in the hallway or on the bus. I also put my e-mail or phone number. This part is totally optional, but I figure it doesn’t hurt to have it on there. As I mentioned before, some years I've bought the folders with the prongs so I could use a sheet protector to hold the students' reading log and behavior chart. Other years, I didn't buy the pronged folders and just slid these papers inside. :) Insert behavior chart and reading log inside the sheet protector so it doesn't get lost in the shuffle. Here is an example of the reading log and behavior log to communicate with parents. Even if you don't use a color chart in your classroom, this behavior log could still work for you. Simply jot down a quick note about the child's day: "Great effort today!" "Don't forget to raise your hand before talking out." "Had some trouble in the cafeteria but otherwise AWESOME day." "Thanks for being a leader today!" Realistically, a teacher doesn't have time to write a personalized note to 25 students every day. That's when STICKERS come to the rescue. I can pass out a sticker to every student who earned one in less than 60 seconds. I don't want anything super time consuming, but I do like a way to keep in touch with parents. I think it also holds kiddos accountable for their day. #oldschool With that being said, if there has been a bigger issue at school, I would definitely call or e-mail the parents to touch base. To learn more about the 5-Step System I use for Take Home Folders, check out Part 2 of this series. Please also check out my Take Home Folder VIDEO to get more ideas and details on setting up, organizing, and managing folders in the primary classroom. Download the labels and forms in my TpT store.

Hey, y'all! I'm about to share some of my fave home-based learning projects but...this is just the tip of the iceberg! I have a TON of art lesssons on my YouTube channel for you and your artists to explore. Be sure and subscribe as I'll be adding many more! Currently, we as educators find ourselves in the most unusual of situations: away from our students for an unforeseeable amount of time and wanting to still connect, teach and create. If you are like me then your district has requested that you attempt to do just that with home-based learning. Because this is unchartered territory, the idea of teaching remotely is confusing, daunting and overwhelming. Where to even start? I've been putting some serious thought into this topic for the last couple of days as I create fun art activities for my students to do at home. I'll be sharing them all right here (for free, of course!) but in the meantime, I wanted to share with you the home-based art lessons I plan to use. Each of these lessons, videos and PDFs are FREE for you and your students can use right now. Feel free to include in your take-home packets or modify to fit your student's needs. Let's begin with this Monochromatic Self-Portrait lesson that is appropriate for kindergarten on up! Just click for the video! Because many students may not have markers at home, you might suggest crayons for them to add color. This Colorful Village lesson was one that all of my students loved! I did it with my first through fourth graders and it was a huge hit. In case students don't have paint at home, markers and crayons can be used. Without those supplies, this could simply be a great drawing task for them to work on creating three-dimensional buildings. Here's the video: These colorful houses were so fun to create! My fourth graders always loved this Romero Britto-inspired self-portrait project. I do think that younger children would love it too. Again, consider suggesting students swap out supplies used for what they have on hand at home. Chris Uphues is easily my student's favorite artist! And can you blame them for loving him so much, his work is just so full of joy! You can check out the entire lesson here. The link to this blog post also includes free downloadable PDFs! Introduce your students to both James Rizzi and Vincent van Gogh with this fun lesson. Click the link for free handouts! Here's the video: Of course, if you want to get kids creating, then you could always have them create their own sketchbook! I plan to create a video to show kids how to create one easily. In the meantime, they could use the Sketchbook Decoder Sheets found here to personalize their sketchbooks! If these look kinda familiar, we have done a similar project with my Getting to Know You sculptures. That project is also one that could be done at home with improvised materials! Times like these could get you down...but we can't let it! So why not have students create drawings of people, places and things that they are grateful for? Click here for two free PDFs! If you are required to send home a packet as we were in my district, you might consider downloading and printing out this sheet and including a circle sticker. These can be found at the dollar store. Children could access a telling of The Dot on YouTube and create their own work of art in the frame! If your students have access to paper, scissors and glue, this easy Greg Mike-inspired project would be a blast for them! Without access to construction paper, students could simply use the paper that they have on hand. A lesson that is always a hit with my students is making this pop-out star. They love creating the patterns and then writing about themselves. Again, think of an alternative set of supplies for students to use so they can create at home. Alright, y'all! Stay tuned as I have much more to come. I hope that gives you and all the young artists out there a fun place to start!
