It may have been the first national publication to prominently feature The Coup, who at that time were Boots Riley, DJ Pam the Funkstress, and E-Roc. This was around the time of Genocide and Juice, their classic second album for Wild Pitch. G-Funk era was in full swing and here was this revolutionary, radical Bay Area hip-hop group with a female DJ, coming up with a completely different narrative -- one that was politically, socially, economically, and culturally conscious -- but still funky. It was that Oakland funk, that Black Panther funk in true hip-hop.
