Today's post is going to share a few simple games to add to your word work time. Read the book Hop on Pop by Dr. Seuss. Illustrate Game Cards Have the students make illustrations to match the word on the game card. I think it is much more beautiful when we use children's art word rather than clipart. Match The Rhyme Working with a small group of children I start with the cards facing up. I would pick a card and the students would have to find the card that rhymes. Find the Rhymes Working independently, students find words that rhyme and put them together. They could record them in their word study journals. Memory Game Play a game of memory. The object of the game would be to flip over a card and find a match. ZOOSE!!! The cards can be played for a game of ZOOSE! In the past, I have shared a game called Moose but instead of Moose we will use a silly word ZOOSE. You take a card and if you read it you get to keep it. If you pick the ZOOSE card all of your cards go back in the deck. click here for Dr. Seuss Rhyming Cards

Students draw and/or write out: - Their name - Their age - Their birthday - A picture of themselves - A picture of their family - Their favourite colour, food, school subject and hobby Students can then share their puzzle pieces in a whole-group sharing circle. I'm so excited about these preschool journals. They are a 'new to us' project for this year. I love how they are coming along. We picked up composition journals over the summer for each friend. Here's what we have so far. Self portrait: (This bottom friend must be a germ or bacteria cell) I love love love their little preschool drawings. We will redo this one at the end of the year. I know that the parents will treasure this collection of little projects. Here's favorite color: So far, we have something for each letter. I think I can keep going with this. Aa is for apples on the Aa. It's little inked finger prints on the letters and then we drew on a few stems and leaves to make them look like apples. For the letter Bb, we had two choices. First, they could turn a B into a bee. Or, they could stamp bees on a Bb. I only have one bee stamp, so I wanted another Bb option. Just about everybody wanted the stamp option though. Here's C week. Coin rubbings on the letter Cc. Also, if the kids do a little drawing or something and give it to us, we're sticking some of them in the journals. This little friend was drawing me a lot the first few weeks of school. She would draw rows and rows of me. This one she said was 'two Ms. Beth." We used tracing your hand as sign in one day. Usually, for the first part of the year anyway, this is our sign in, tracing their name or writing their name. I think we'll include this once every few months anyway. Here's how we're fitting this into our day. We either have it as the sign in for the day or it's at a table. The kids do something quickly at the sign in table as soon as they enter (name, tracing hand, etc). Usually, I have one table set up each morning for journals. We have other tables with other table toys or themed activities. I try to make sure each friend stops there once a week to complete the project. Some really like it and can't wait to do it on Monday and want to do it each morning. Others, need called over on Friday and promised it will be quick, but that's just a few. It hasn't been time consuming or a burden to plan yet. The parents that have been in for leader day so far are loving it and can't wait to see what's been added. Here are other posts with our journal ideas: journals again June 8, 2013 journals Jan 19, 2013

Vest No. 1 is a classic slipover that fits perfectly on top of shirts and dresses. While inspired by classic men’s wear, this vest has feminine details, such as the double folded neckline. The vest is worked top down in stockinette stitch. First you knit the top part of the back, then both front pieces, close the yoke in the round and work the rest of the body. Neckline and armhole opening egdes are picked up from existing stitches and therefore no final sewing is needed. An exotic and colourful Moroccan Couscous with chickpeas, roasted red peppers, diced carrots, toasted almonds and plump raisins are tossed in a fragrant dressing of fresh garlic, tangy lemon juice, fruity extra virgin olive oil and an aromatic combination of fragrant seasonings: ground coriander, cumin and cinnamon. Simple and delicious, the dressing really highlights the roasted vegetables, which have already been sweetened and intensified in flavour during cooking. The chickpeas, and excellent source of protein, fibre and vitamins, add their own wonderful flavour and texture to this festive dish. Another feature of Moroccan Couscous is that it can be varied in endless ways: the carrots and red pepper can easily be replaced by sweet potato, pumpkin or eggplant; pistachios, pine nuts or walnuts can be used in lieu of almonds, and chopped dates, apricots or prunes can easily be replaced by the raisins. Light and delicious served either warm or cold, this colourful Moroccan Couscous salad is excellent paired with grilled lamb, chicken or even a traditional Tagine. Moroccan Couscous with roasted vegetables, chickpeas & almonds Serves 4 4 tbsp extra virgin olive oil 2 carrots, cut into quarters lengthways and thinly sliced 2 red peppers, diced 1 zucchini, thinly sliced 1 red onion, cut into wedges and separated 1/2 cup slivered almonds 4 tbsp freshly squeezed lemon juice 2 garlic cloves, minced 1 tsp turmeric 2 tsp ground cumin 2 tsp ground coriander 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon 2 tsp salt 2 cups couscous 1/2 cup raisins 2 1/2 cups chicken stock, brought to a boil 2 cup canned chickpeas, rinsed and drained 1/4 cup fresh cilantro, finely chopped plus extra for garnish 2 tbsp fresh mint, finely chopped plus extra for garnish Preheat the oven to 475°F. Toss the carrot, red pepper, zucchini and red onion in a baking dish with 1 tablespoon of the olive oil and bake for 15 minutes. While the vegetables are cooking, lightly toast the almonds in a frying pan until they're golden brown. Remove from the pan and set aside. In a small bowl, whisk together the remaining 3 tablespoons of olive oil, lemon juice, garlic, cumin, coriander, cinnamon and salt, and mix well. Five minutes before the vegetables have finished roasting, mix the couscous, turmeric and raisins in a large bowl and pour over the boiling stock. Cover with plastic wrap to seal in the steam, and let sit for five minutes. Then fluff the couscous with a fork to separate the grains and stir through the carrot, red pepper, red onion, almonds, chickpeas, mint and cilantro. Pour over the dressing and toss together until well combined. Serve on a large platter, either warm or at room temperature with a garnish of cilantro and chopped mint.
