It's 1943 and as war rages on, teenage runaway Rose hops off a train at King's Cross, hoping the capital city will provide a far more exciting and glamorous life than the one she's left behind in Durham. By marrying Leo, Jane is brought into the inner circle of the now old and frail Rose and they will both face up to the secrets of their past. After The Last Dance is split between the war-ravaged 1940s and the present day and I was intrigued how the two female protagonists would be brought together. Rose is young and naive when she arrives in London but she also has a bolshiness that helps her survive those first few days as a stranger in a new, vibrant city. Fast forward to the present day and Rose is now a wealthy, powerful and often oppressive woman and I was intrigued by her change in circumstance and character. She'd transformed from a pleasure-seeking and hopeful girl into someone self-important and judgemental that I didn't like very much so I wanted to know why she had become so harsh and bitter. The other characters - newlyweds Jane and Leo - were also quite difficult to warm to at the beginning. Both are troubled and selfish but while Jane is superficial and money-orientated, there is obviously something dark lurking in her past that has caused her to behave the way she does and I was eager to keep reading to find out more. I loved seeing the war years through Rose's eyes as she grows from a teenager to a young woman. Life with rationing and air-raids was harsh but Rose finds solace in Rainbow Corner, which is fun and glamorous and a world away from war-weary London. I'd never heard of Rainbow Corner before but the dance hall really came alive on the pages for me. I was fascinated by the jubilant home from home for the American soldiers and I could see why Rose would find herself drawn to it. Rainbow Corner is where Rose really starts to come alive and where she meets the people who will really shape her life and her future. There is a lot packed within the pages of After The Last Dance, from a coming-of-age story to an emotional rollercoaster tale of family, friendship and love. The two women's stories are perfectly woven together and although I thought the start was slow, I ended up intently trying to find out what happened to both Rose and Jane to bring them to their present day selves.

Artists Dylan Hausthor and Paul Guilmoth started Sleep Creek in 2016, when they lived together on Peaks Island off the coast of Maine, a place accessible only by boat. The islands boundary was their perimeter to make photographs. The project began as a documentary of a piece of land and the stories of its inhabitants, but expanded to include autobiographical elements. It portrays a landscape filled with trauma and beauty, a place where animals are only seen when hunted and humans balance between an unapologetic existence and deep secrecy. The haunting images are at once documentary and fictional, weaving myth and symbol and in order to confront us with the experiential. Sleep Creek is a landscape filled with trauma and beauty. Its a place where animals are only seen when theyre being hunted and humans balance between an unapologetic existence and an abyss of secrecy. These images manipulate a landscape that is simultaneously autobiographical, documentary, and fictional: a weaving of myth and symbol in order to be confronted with the experiential. Following the rituals of those within it, Sleep Creek is an obsession between the subject and the photographer a compulsion to reveal its shrouded Nature. Sleep Creek is entirely shot in New England, for the reason that this was the only region that the artists knew. Even though the place holds a strong regional identity, Paul and Dylan didnt want the work to represent or speak to a regional identity but to use the region as a backdrop for more unhindered ideas of story, myth, and character. That said, they do believe there is something specifically inspiring about the simultaneous history and youth of this part of America. In their own words: Colonialism is apparent everywhere, every square foot of woods has been tainted by something human, and every pond is always covered with algae. Jack and his mother call pain relief killers. Jack and his mother only have each other as company until old nick comes to bring them stuff their need but jack's mother wants old nick to bring them vitamins but old nick says they cost too much. Jack was born in the room where their live now. Jack's mother is breastfeeding jack and still is. I wondered if Jack's mother family miss her like she misses them. jack has never walked outside and never wore shoes in the five years since he was born and jack's mother does not own a pair of shoes either. I was sad to read that jack's mother was kidnapped by old nick. It was sad to read that the only way jack could get out the room was to play dead. Jack and his mother are so brave. I am addicted to this book it is hard to put it down. I heard it is being made into a movie. I would love to watch it. I would love to read more about Jack and his mother. I hope old nick goes to jail where he belongs. I hope jack and his mother are reunited with their family.Jack's Mother takes everything old nick so he does not hurt jack her precious son. It was sad to read that the year before she had jack she give birth to a baby girl that sadly did not live that long and old nick buried the baby in the garden under a bush but jack's mother told their lawyer about her daughter. The year after the tragedy of the loss of her baby daughter she give birth to jack in room by herself this time when her daughter was born old nick was watching the cord had knotted around the poor baby neck. I was sad to read that l am glad old nick is in jail where he can not hurt anybody. I am glad jack's mother was reunited with her family who thought she was dead and had a funeral for her. her mother and her father split up after she disappeared. there is 401 pages in this book. there is 5 different chapters in this book one is present, two is unlying, three is dying, four is after and five is living. I highly recommend this book l can not put in to words how great this book really is. Jack's mother is going to the dentist and getting her teeth sorted so she is not in pain anymore. It was sad to read that jack's mother took a overdose glad she survived. Jack is making great progress outside room. I was happy jack's sister's body was found so the family could give her a proper funeral and proper grave so the family can take her flowers and teddies or just visit the baby girl's grave. jack's mother can name her daughter and get her a headstone for the baby girl that never got to see the world before she went to heaven where she gets to watch over her family. Something I’m sure you all know about me by now is I tend to lean toward the more practical types of crochet patterns – “patterns with a purpose”. So I was pleasantly (very pleasantly I might add) surprised when I opened Twinkie Chan’s newest book and discovered each of these yummy crochet projects does have a purpose! At the same time they are super FUN!
We recently started reading about early English colonies like Roanoke, Jamestown, and Plymouth. Colonists had to have amazing constitutions to survive life in the new settlements, but what has been more amazing to my students (and me) is the trip from England to the new world on the ship. We did a little extra digging into the voyages on ships like the Mayflower. The Mayflower was a merchant ship and not really intended for voyagers. The 102 passengers mainly stayed in the gun deck or "tween" deck in a space that was about 80' long, 24' wide, and a ceiling height of about 5 1/2'. To give you a little comparison, a school bus is usually 40' long, so the Mayflower is the length of two school buses parked one in front of the other. In order to visualize the parts of the ship a little better, the students are creating cutaway Mayflower diagrams with 14 main ship parts labeled. We defined the ship parts first and then searched Mayflower diagrams and pictures to draw our own cross-sections of the ship. I found this SITE and this SITE with reliable definitions for the students, but there were plenty of other online resources. Google images had great results too. I gave the students this Mayflower Ship Parts Handout, and they completed the definitions first. After we compared definitions, students used legal sized white paper (and rulers) to draw, label, and color their diagrams. We did not quite finish before spring break, but I love the way the diagrams look so far. This has been a great activity to enhance my history content as well as work with proportion and measurement.
