As a Charlotte Mason educator, music appreciation is important to our homeschooling. We strive to learn about different types of music, early in homeschooling. Things like outdoor concerts and patriotic concerts are something we attempt to do often. We all know how important music is to our lives, but music appreciation is more than just enjoying listening to your favorite kind, but also to experience classical music. Charlotte Mason introduced her students to the classical music that was prevalent in her world and still is in ours. This is what makes it classic! It is amazing how intrigued a person

Description from Knitty, Summer 2007: Coachella is hot! The dry heat of the Coachella Valley desert in Southern California inspired this cool racerback tank. Knit in a slightly looser-than-specified gauge, the construction of this tank beats the heat with a draped neckline and a mostly bare back. A perfect look for basking by the pool in Palm Springs or for rocking the Coachella Valley Music Festival down in Indio. The placement and shape of the armholes distort the front of the piece when worn to create a curved, draped neckline. The front edge of the armholes should fall at approximately the middle of your armpit on either side. I designed this garment to accommodate a halter bra; you might also be able to find racerback bras that fit under this top without showing. [p.s. it's pronounced co-chella] Extra pattern notes from the designer: I thought I might give a couple notes for people who are interested in the pattern. I’ve noticed a couple recurring themes in people’s emails and comments and I thought I might address them here. Fit: I want to say that I really think it could look good on people of a lot of different shapes and sizes. I wrote the pattern for a wide range of sizes and even added short row shaping to the largest sizes. If you are blessed with a large chest, I am sure you have thought a lot about the issues involved in your particular body geometry, and feel free to modify the pattern as needed. I really like the book Big Girl Knits-- it has a really good intro section that I read when I was writing this pattern and I highly recommend it to anyone. Also: I am wearing a bra in every one of those photos. It isn’t one of those useless strapless bras either, it is a standard convertible halter bra. I’m surprised to read people lamenting that they can’t wear a bra with it. I designed this pattern specifically, from the beginning, around the requirement that I be able to wear a bra. Yarn substitutions: I have to say I didn’t know there was so much anti-nylon-yarn feeling among knitters! I love this yarn, and I’ve had it in my stash for a while looking for the perfect project for it. I thought it was especially good choice for a published pattern since it is widely available. If you don’t feel the same as I do about Berocco Suede, there are so many other yarns that could work and substitution should be super easy. I will say this-- I definitely recommend knitting a little looser than the recommended gauge for the yarn you choose. If you knit it loose, the edging will roll less and look nice, and the drape will be better. If you knit it at the recommended gauge or tighter than recommended, the cloth will be less drapey and the edges might roll too much. Last, like any piece of clothing it’s all about your individual style and styling it with the rest of your wardrobe. I have worn it with a white tank underneath it, and it looked pretty cool. I wore it once with a contrast color scoopneck t-shirt on underneath, and it looked pretty good though that wasn’t really my style. Obviously if you have bra issues and don’t want to buy a halter bra, don’t want to show your brastrap, and don’t want to go braless, this would be the way to go.
📸 8 Lightroom presets for concert photography, live music and band photography, festival photography and even more. 📌 Compatible with Adobe Lightroom Mobile and Desktop 📌 Editing live music photography can be really tough. The artificial lighting, differing lighting conditions and variety of colours can make it challenging to firstly get a good shot, and secondly get any kind of consistent theme throughout your photos as you would with other subjects. Through many years of experience I have finally found a way to generate a consistent style to whatever a live performance or concert throws at me. 📌 These presets are ones that I use myself. You can view my images on my website www.willbaileyonline.com or my Instagram page www.instagram.com/willbaileyphoto to see my end results. 📌 It should be noted that these presets offer a basic starting point to the style of your photo. They are in no way 'slap-on' filters similar to what others offer. I like to flick through my list of presets and see what I feel will work with the photo. Once I've found a style that suits then I go through all of my options and adjust the photo, all the way from my white balance, basic tones, camera/lens calibration and further. I will play with the sliders until I get the results that I am happy with. 📌 Some presets will not work perfectly on every photo. Given that no two photos are the same and no two subjects are the same it is often that certain presets will work better on some photoshoots than others. The colour of the lights, natural contrast of the photo, exposure, and everything else all contribute to how effective a preset will be — not to mention personal preferences. 📌 One thing that I have learned to be careful of when using presets for live music photography is checking that skin tones are realistic. Often applying a preset to a photo that has harsh colours can throw the skin tones off. An easy fix that I have found is to adjust the hue/saturation/luminance sliders to the point that you get somewhere you're happy with. 📌 Adobe Lightroom Presets can help to increase the speed of your editing workflow, they can allow you to produce outstanding effects that you might not be able to replicate on your own, and they can also provide a fantastic educational resource if you want to teach yourself how to create different types of filters and effects for your photography. I am always happy to help you use the presets in order to produce the best photos possible, please get in touch with me and I will be more than happy to assist you. No refunds or exchanges can be made on digital products once they have been downloaded.
The shag is a quick, fun, and very social dance from the beaches of South Carolina, which makes it the perfect dance to learn for a party.
Minimal Prep! This escape room allows students to use their knowledge of note values, note positions on either treble or bass staffs, and time signatures to solve the case of Who Stole the Baton? Three alternate endings are included so that you can change the ending between classes or chose which musician (instrument) you want to be the culprit. You only have to hide one pair of puzzles (in one location), everything else is print and play! Great for music class, choir, orchestra or band, this escape room is designed for students to work in groups of 3-4, but students could work alone or in larger groups. Can I use this from a cart? Yes! You do not need a dedicated music room for this escape “room.” The clues that need to be hidden, should be hidden near “A FACE.” An image of a conductor conducting is included so that you can print that and use it as your “face.” You could tape that to a regular-size manila envelop and put the clues inside. What is the prep? Prep involves printing and hiding one pair of clues (together). Optional Prep: cutting a single page of hint cards and putting the clues for hiding into separate envelops for each team. How do I use the alternate endings? Students are given a fictional orchestra seating chart at the beginning. Puzzles 3 and 4 give them the coordinates for one musician’s seat (e.g., H-10). There are three versions of Puzzle 4 that will change the letter and hence the orchestra section of the culprit. Each version has a different instrument shadow so you can easily keep track of which ending you just used. Puzzles 1-3 also have instrument shadows so students will not be suspicious. Will I have to buy any extra materials? No, you do not need any fancy locks or to use any Google forms. One envelope per team is recommended, but optional. What supplies are needed? Paper (8.5in x 11in) A printer (black-and-white copies are fine for most puzzles) Optional: scissors, envelops What background knowledge do my students need? Students should know the values of common notes (eighth note, quarter note, half note, dotted quarter note, whole note, quarter rest, half rest, full rest). The notes are never named in the student materials, so this works for British students as well. They should also know that 4/4 time means four beats per measure. Students should also be able to identify the note positions on either the treble clef or bass clef (both options are included). What reading level do my students need? There is only one page of text for students to read (the Maestro’s Note about what happened). The Flesh-Kincaid reading level is 3rd-5th grade depending on if I include the jargon words (e.g., musician, orchestra, instrument; these are longer than the rest of the text) in the analysis. You can assign students to groups to ensure a mix of reading ability. What will my students do? Working in small groups of 3-4, your students will cooperate to solve 4 puzzles to find out (1) where the conductor’s baton is hidden and (2) who has stolen it. A single child can complete this (e.g., homeschooler or individual music lessons), but it may take longer and require more hints. The puzzles are: Puzzle 1: Students will look at highlighted note positions in sheet music to read “A FACE” which will lead them to the location of Puzzles 3 and 4. This puzzle is available for both treble clef and bass clef. A half-page photo of a conductor is included that you can use for this. Puzzle 2: Students will use a key to decipher a message hidden in a sheet of percussion music. This message will reveal where the baton is hidden. Puzzles 3 and 4:The final puzzles need to be combined to read the coordinates on the orchestra seating chart to determine who stole the baton. Puzzle 3 includes sheet music in 4/4 time. Students will add bar lines to divide the music into measures (this gives them a number). Puzzle 4 includes a grid of 30 squares that each contains notes. Students will use their knowledge of note values to color in the squares with 4 beats (this will reveal a letter). How long does this take? 30-40 minutes. There is an alternative version the hidden message (cipher) puzzle that you can use to make the activity shorter. What is included in this digital download? This is a zip folder that includes the following pages as PDFs: Easy-to-follow printing and set-up instructions • A complete walkthrough with solutions to all puzzles • A diagram of an orchestra setting chart • A note from a conductor about the missing baton • A song for note position puzzle in treble clef • Alternative version of the note position song in bass clef • A song with a hidden message • Alternative version of the hidden message song with a shorter message • A cipher decoder/key • A bar line puzzle • A note value puzzle • A summary to read at the end that explains why orchestras are set-up like they are • Hint cards for students • A half-page sized photo of a conductor conducting if you need it for hiding clues • A poster for your door or cart • A “you found the baton!” poster • British English versions of the puzzles where “color” is changed to “colour” * Follow me for updates and be the first to know about new products and sales! * * Remember, you can receive credit towards future TpT purchases by leaving fair reviews! I have frequently been asked and I have seen similar questions posted on Kodaly and Music Ed Facebook groups. "I am interested in learning more about Kodaly. What book resources should I get?" So I thought I would compile a list of ten of my personal favorites. Now, if you know anything about Kodaly teachers, we really are hoarders when it comes to resources. You can absolutely never have too many. Some books might have great pedagogical ideas, sequences, song lists, or folk songs. Some folk songs might have additional verses in other books or they might be a variant (did anyone else have to go collect variants in their levels??) Now, let's be clear on what I am NOT saying. I am NOT telling you that you need to rush out and buy these 10 books if they are not currently on your bookshelf. I am not telling you that these are the top 10 in all of Kodaly world. I am not saying that there are not even better resources out there. I am not telling you that these will replace Kodaly training. Absolutely nothing will. But if you... A) want to learn more about the Kodaly concept B) have taken or are in levels and want to see what books other Kodaly teachers are using or C) are in a Kodaly resource book addicts' club (hellllloooo, you are my people!) then this post is for you! SO, in no particular order: 1) Yearly Plans by Ann Eisen and Lamar Robertson This was so valuable to me when I was going through my Kodaly training before I had made my own yearly plans. It lays out month by month for each grade level what you should be preparing, presenting ,and practicing and includes song suggestions and practice activities. It is meant to be a companion to the American Methodology, so if you get this, I strongly recommend that you also own the American Methodology. 2) 150 American Folk Songs to sing read and play Lovingly referred to as the "150". This book was a required text when I was in level 1 and it is such a great resource for finding folk songs. It organizes them by tone set, which makes it really easy to find songs when you are working on specific concepts. 3) Sail Away 155 American Folk Song to sing read and play The "155" is a collection of EVEN MORE folk songs, because, let's be honest, we can never have too many. Like the 150, this one is organized by tone set. 4) ANYTHING by the New England Dance Masters (a few of my favorites are Chimes of Dunkirk and Sashay the Donut) When I started at my school I was told that they had a tradition of a folk dancing night and that each grade level was to perform a dance on stage. At the time, I hadn't been exposed to much folk dancing, but through Kodaly, our community folk dances at KMEA, and various workshops I have not only come to really enjoy it, but feel comfortable and confident teaching them to my students. Definitely get these books with the CDs and if you can, the DVDs when available. I LOVE watching Peter and Mary Alice Amidon teach the dances. The break it down into steps and a pay really close attention to the little details that really help students be successful in learning them without feeling frustrated. 5) Lullabies to Circle Games by Jo Kirk (I have not found a place to order this online, but if you are interested in it, you can reach Jo Kirk on her website) This has tons of fingerplays, lullabies, and songs for children from before birth through elementary school age. I strongly recommend this book for parents and those who might teach early childhood or preschool music classes, but there are things I pull from it for K/1/2 still. 6) Handy Play Party Book What I love about this is it gives me information about what I can DO with the songs (the singing game or the play party) which maybe I hadn't previously been aware of. 7) The Song Garden (Book 1, 2, 3) by Carol Heath - I believe these are out of print. I couldn't find them on Amazon or Ebay when I looked, but they are a treasure trove. Unfortunately, these three are just collections of songs. There is a book that goes with these that tells what you do with each song and how to teach it, but I don't have my hands on it... yet. 8) An American Methodology by Ann Eisen and Lamar Robertson This was basically our bible in level 3, and that's where I really learned how to utilize it and what the breakdown of physical/aural/visual looked like and countless activities for each during each concept. It also included a variety of ways to practice each concept that are really helpful to me when lesson planning. 9) Kodaly Today by Houlahan and Tacka This book was so incredibly helpful to me after level 1 when I was starting at a new school and trying to implement the Kodaly method which was new for all of my students. This book has a section specifically for older beginners and it has some really great song lists. 10) First, We Sing! Book Two (and Book 1) By Susan Brumfield I love both Book 1 and Book 2 from Susan Brumfield. She was at KMEA and I got to see her present this past year. The books come with CDs that include her students singing the songs and are great models for your students. These recordings are perfect to leave when you have a sub and the students already know the game but that vocal model can help them to sing in an appropriate range while you are away. I like that a lot of the songs in these books were new to me and there are some nice multicultural pieces in them. BONUS 11) Anything by Jill Trinka - I would be remiss if I did not mention Jill Trinka's song collections. They include a huge variety of folk songs and singing games and are definitely worth the purchase! So what are YOUR go to books in your collection? I'd love to hear!
