Teach Your Students How to Use Computing to Explore Powerful and Creative Ideas In the twenty-first century, computers have become indispensable in music making, distribution, performance, and consumption. Making Music with Computers: Creative Programming in Python introduces important concepts and skills necessary to generate music with computers. It interweaves computing pedagogy with musical concepts and creative activities, showing students how to integrate the creativity and design of the arts with the mathematical rigor and formality of computer science. The book provides an introduction to creative software development in the Python programming language. It uses innovative music-creation activities to illustrate introductory computer programming concepts, including data types, algorithms, operators, iteration, lists, functions, and classes. The authors also cover GUIs, event-driven programming, big data, sonification, MIDI programming, client-server programming, recursion, fractals, and complex system dynamics. Requiring minimal musical or programming experience, the text is designed for courses in introductory computer science and computing in the arts. It helps students learn computer programming in a creative context and understand how to build computer music applications. Also suitable for self-study, the book shows musicians and digital music enthusiasts how to write music software and create algorithmic music compositions. Web ResourceA supplementary website (http://jythonMusic.org) provides a music library and other software resources used in the text. The music library is an extension of the jMusic library and incorporates other cross-platform programming tools. The website also offers example course and associated media resources. 44 Tables, black and white; 63 Illustrations, black and white
Orchestra Expressions is a beginning method for string orchestra that combines the best in string pedagogy with a focus on musicianship and musical context. Lessons always start with a warm-up, with more advanced warm-ups being taught as the method progresses. The method starts with four fingers down, extra large notation, and simultaneous development of both hands. Shifting is approached early on Cello and Bass, and basic theory is included in the method. Later in book 1 and through book 2, a large focus is put on teaching the historical and cultural origins of everything played; musicianship and the importance of understanding this context is taught.Book 1, Viola Book and CD. In Strategies for Success in Musical Theatre, veteran musical director and teacher Herbert Marshall provides an essential how-to guide for teachers or community members who find themselves in charge of music directing a show. Stepping off the podium, Marshall offers practical and often humorous real-world advice on managing auditions; organizing rehearsals; working with a choir, choreographer, and leads; how to run a sitzprobe, a technical rehearsal, and a dress rehearsal; how to manage the cast and crew energy for a successful opening night; and ways to end the experience on a high note for all involved. Throughout the book, Marshall emphasizes the importance of learning through performance and the beauty of a group united in a common goal. In doing so, he turns what can appear as a never-ending list of tasks and demand for specialized knowledge into a manageable, educational, and ultimately engaging and fun experience for all. Because the techniques in Marshall's book have been thoroughly workshopped and classroom tested, they are based in proven pedagogy and will be of particular use for the music director in acting as a teaching director: someone imparting theatrical knowledge to his or her cast and production staff. Marshall provides both extended and abbreviated timelines, flexible to fit any director's needs. Marshall's book is a greatly beneficial resource for music education students and teachers alike, giving an insightful glimpse into the range of possibilities within a music educator's career. Musicians and actors with varying levels of skill and experience will be able to grow simultaneously through Marshall's innovative teaching plans. Through collaborative techniques, steps in the book serve to educate both director and student. Thoroughly illustrated with charts, diagrams, and scores, Strategies for Success in Musical Theatre is an ideal companion for all who work with school and community based musical theater productions.
We’ve accomplished so much in the realm piano pedagogy over the decades. So many fine teachers, fine books, and fine pedagogical piano literature. The music education community can tout similar advancements, and yet we piano teachers tend to know so little of them. We know little of the theories and recent research regarding music learning,… Continue reading Piano Teachers as Music Educators

Books Part 2 Wonderful book with great illustrations of the varied ways vegetables grow.. up, down, and around. Explore various ways to move arms, legs, whole body, etc., then teach song: Begin with exploring moving up and down; play slide whistle and have students move up and down, vary playing slowly, quickly, legato, staccato, etc. Then ask them to move one arm ONLY, then elbow only (very funny), hand only, thumb only. It's an interesting thing to observe! Teach song; every time students sing "up" they will move higher, "down", lower, and they can choose HOW to move "'round and round". Perform movements and song with book, then divide into small groups to create rhythms in 6/8 based on words like: seeds, grow, plant, flowers, sunshine, and various names of veggies. Develop first as a class and display. One rhythm possibility: Eat your veggies.. ta, ti, ta, ti. Play around with creating these ostinato, transfer to UPP (unpitched percussion) and add as a "B" section to song. Perform again with book. I LOVE this book!! The pop up version is the best.. truly! I used this to teach and label rest with kindergarteners last year and it worked so very well! My lovely friend and fellow music teacher, Noreen Hofmann wrote this song to Mortimer.. it is my favorite of the many "Mortimer" songs I've heard. Divide class in half once orchestration is learned; half will play/act the characters from the book, other half will play orchestration, switch. Spring Is Here is a cutie patootie book your kids are sure to LOVE! A great lesson from fellow teacher and blogger, Thom Borden! Recorder lesson, too!

You may purchase this 43 page resource at my store: www.orchestraclassroom.com This is my latest creation....a workbook for beginning orchestra students to help with note reading. I have found that some students come to class with some piano experience and they already understand music notation. There are also students who have had no experience with music notation and they often struggle to keep up. Some students play by ear and never learn to read notes! Students who are good at reading notes have a definite advantage in orchestra class. I am hoping that these worksheets will help students who have had no previous experience and help them understand note reading and basic theory. These worksheet do not replace teaching the concepts first, but I plan to use them as a tool to assess student understanding and give them practice at note-reading. A great time to use worksheets like this is the first week of school...before students bring their instruments to class. It takes a lot of time to assign lockers, folders, renting instruments, etc...and these worksheets are basic enough that the students can begin learning notation right away. Once students have their instruments, it is very helpful to teach the class in sections. For example, violins can work on a page in the workbook while you teach the cellists how to hold their instrument and adjust their endpins. Then the cello players work on the notebook while you teach violins and viola correct left hand position for their instruments. This 43 page workbook is now available for download here or here. After purchasing the download, you may print the workbook as many times are you need for your entire class and you will be able to use it every year. No need to buy separate theory books every year when you can just print this workbook!

Folk songs and chants are so important in speech, language, and vocal development. They are also an important part of our cultural heritage. The tell the story of our grandparents, great grandparents, and are worth passing on to future generations. This PDF includes a copy of the words for each song/chant that you can project onto the board, create posters or a flip book. Each song/chant has a vocal exploration. Project onto the board and follow the dashed line with your voice. Teacher will need to model the first time if kids have never done this kind of activity before inviting the kids to try it. Once they know how to do it, they love getting to come to the board to “be the teacher” and lead the class. I use big pointers so that they can reach. After you have done the vocal exploration as a class, you can do the vocal exploration worksheets where the kids get to create their own patterns to take home. There is a beat chart for each song/rhyme with icons. This is also a great "pre-music reading activity" because it allows them to track from left to right and move on to the next line when the finish the first line, also reinforcing literacy concepts from their classroom. Many of these folk songs have concepts that I would not present in preschool or kindergarten, such as la or ta rest, but they are well suited for other kindergarten/preschool concepts such as fast/slow, loud/soft, high/low, steady beat, four voices, and vocal timbre. I have included a copy of each song with ideas of ways to use it specifically for kindergarten and younger. Last but not least is a crown that has the title and clip art for each song/chant on the front and the lyrics/words on the back. I thought this would be a neat way for the kids to “take the songs and chants home”. So many times, music is not a part of our students’ home lives. Maybe these crowns will help parents find little ways to interact musically with their kids. Song/Rhyme List: Bow Wow Wow Lucy Locket Starlight, Starbright Cobbler, Cobbler, Snail, Snail Bee, Bee Bumblebee Doggie, Doggie Bounce High, Bounce Low Rain, Rain, Go Away Queen, Queen Caroline *I have plans to add to this set in the future. When I add to it, the price will go up, but those who have already purchased will be able to receive the updates for free!
