Lying within Australia's Coral Coast is the Pinnacles Desert where visitors will come face to face with large ancient limestone pillars.
This is a rock formation found 19 miles from the Arizona/Utah border just outside of Page, Arizona (Highway 89, Utah Mile Marker 19). There are many of these strange toad stool hoodoo formations in this valley. The landscape is layered in red and white sediment and dotted with these hoodoos. If there are places that exceed your imagination then Trona Pinnacles are among them. The white pinnacles in the middle of the desert look and feel like a place from another planet.
A beautiful photo of Trona Pinnacles, An unusual geological feature in the California Desert National Conservation Area. The landscape consists of more than 500 tufa spires (porous rock formed as a deposit when springs interact with other bodies of water), some as high as 140 ft (43 m), rising from the bed of the Searles Lake (dry) basin. The pinnacles vary in size and shape from short and squat to tall and thin, and are composed primarily of calcium carbonate (tufa). They now sit isolated and slowly crumbling away near the south end of the valley, surrounded by many square miles of flat, dried mud and with stark mountain ranges at either side.

There are so many things we can learn from our National Parks! This bundle includes activities that can be used in middle and high school classrooms to teach concepts about geology, earth science, rocks and minerals using activities based in some of our national parks. This bundle includes: Death Valley Topographic Map- Students cut out and create a 3D topographic map of Badwater Basin in Death Valley National Park! Yellowstone Hydrothermal Features- Students investigate the four major hydrothermal features (geysers, hot springs, mud pots and fumaroles) in Yellowstone National Park, then they make a booklet about what they learned! Petrified Forest Lab- Students create their own petrified paper towel as they learn about petrified wood in Petrified Forest National Park! Megasequence Booklet- Students cut out maps and put together a booklet of the large rock layers in the United States. These layers cover the area of most of the National Parks! Badlands Rock Layers- Students learn about and create a 3D model of the major rock layers in Badlands National Park. Different Types of Volcanoes-Students will research the four major types of volcanoes and then create an informational poster about what they learned. You can click on the above listings to see more about them. Check out my National Parks Bundle for more science related activities! Do you want to teach about the National Parks every week? Check out this National Park-of-the-Week Slides activity to engage students in the parks each week! Check out these other National Park resources! The most incredible places to see right in your own backyard.
The Clay Cliffs are huge sharp pinnacles and ridges with deep, narrow ravines separating them. They are made of layers of gravel and silt, deposited by rivers flowing from glaciers existing 1-2 million years ago. Compared to the nearby mountains, which are 250 million years old, the Clay Cliffs are relatively new. Rain is slowly washing down the cliffs and it's releasing pebble that is piling in between the ravines. The ground around is soaked with sedimented mud that creates a slippery and sticky surface, hard to walk on. General scale of the mounds is between 5 to 50 meters.
