Happy MTSS Monday! This is my last MTSS Monday post before spring break! In an effort to keep your expectations low when it comes to me posting on a regular basis, I will be taking spring break off ;) Cheryl of Primary Graffiti decided to jump on my MTSS Monday train! It's nice to see her inspired by another one of my ideas! Maybe MTSS Monday will become a "thing" and I will be the creator. Kind of like that time Dr. Seuss created the word 'nerd'! MTSS is basically RTI, if you're familiar with that term, but with a different name. We used to call it RTI but then the 'man' changed the name (probably just to confuse me) so now it's MTSS or Multi-Tiered Systems of Support....fancy. MTSS happens everyday from 9:15-9:45 in our school. EVERY student works on individualized activities. (Don't stop reading here...it's possible and can even become easy if you can find a way that works for you!) Some grade levels exchange students across the whole grade level...it's a circus. I can't deal. My first grade team and I decided we wanted to do MTSS in our own rooms. With our own students. This opens up our collaboration time to share resources....see last weeks post....as opposed to catch up on our own students progress in another teachers MTSS group. Tier 1 instruction is the general education program. This means that ALL students are receiving core instruction with flexible grouping and differentiation. Screening and progress monitoring are utilized to determine instructional needs and measure student progress. For students who are not making adequate progress, teachers combine their core instruction with additional interventions depending on the needs of the individual students. This additional support is considered Tier 2. In this tier you will see targeted, supplemental interventions aligned with the core curriculum. Tier 2 supports can be provided by the teacher or school support faculty (a reading or math coach) 3 times a week for 30 minutes. These interventions should be delivered through a small group format. Progress monitoring data is used to adjust instruction and intervention. There will be a small percentage of students who still may show learning difficulties with Tier 2 intervention. These students will need more intensive interventions. Tier 3 interventions are designed for students who do not respond to Tier 1 or 2 interventions. This is the highest level of support and is much more individualized. Students will meet one-on-one or in very small groups (2-3 people) 4-5 times a week for 30 minutes. At our school they almost always need 6-8 weeks of intervention data to move from Tier 2 to Tier 3 and beyond that to testing. Tier 2 documentation should show assessment results bi-weekly. Tier 3 assessments should happen weekly. In a couple of my previous posts I shared with you how I structure and organize MTSS in my classroom so I won't do that again here. I know this is starting to get a little long. I will share with you how I'm monitoring my students progress and keeping track of the extra practice and enrichment activities I provide my Tier 1 students. I posted an early version of these in my first MTSS Monday post. Since then I've fine-tuned each tier and added some very basic graphs that could be used to graph either Tier 2 or Tier 3 progress. I print the Tier 3 progress monitoring page and graphing page back to back. You will need a Tier 3 page for each Tier 3 student but you will be able to use it for the whole course of your intervention. After realizing our RtI model wasn't really working for us or our students, the teachers in my building decided to analyze the different components of our RtI model. This blog series will go in depth with how we scrutinized each of the following parts of the model: An overview High Quality Instruction Universal Screening Research Based Interventions Continuous Progress Monitoring Fidelity RtI meetings Professional Development I have been really excited about this post of the series because it the area that we really needed to grow in. Last year we focused a lot of attention on interventions, progress monitoring, storing data, and fidelity. At the end of the school year we came with A PLAN for our RtI meetings. This post from Conversations in Literacy was super helpful to us. It helped us to form our thinking about how we wanted to structure the meetings. Here's what we came up with: At the end of each intervention cycle (7-8 weeks long), my team and I will make sure we have all the intervention data for Tier II and Tier III students. This includes the intervention progress monitoring and a DRA progress monitoring. We want to analyze their progress on a skill based level (interventions) but also on the "big picture" level (DRA). Once we have all of this, we will meet as an RtI team to discuss the interventions that stay the same, need to be intensified, or need to completely change. These are the decision rules that we will be using this year: Each person at the meeting will have an RtI folder within it that contains the decision rules, our grade level benchmarks, and a list of the interventions that are available to our students. We will be sending home information to the parents to inform them about the interventions that their child will be receiving and how they can support those skills at home. If the interventions must intensify or progress is not being made, then we will be scheduling additional meetings to meet with the parents. Our goal is that meetings will be more fluid. There will not be any questions about when they will occur. They are already on the calendar and every Tier II and Tier III student will be discussed based on the data. Our goal is that we will be better serving our students because decisions will be made and changes will be made in a timely manner. This is our hope...and goodness...I really want it to work! One question that we have had....What if we get a new student that is not in a Tier yet? And what if a student all of sudden takes a turn and needs an intervention before our next RtI meeting? These are important concerns. So we created a consultation form that can be used anytime a teacher would like to meet with us about a student prior to our pre-scheduled RtI meetings. Then we can work together to come up with a plan for that student. It will be really interesting to see how this plan turns out in action this year. Hello Friends!!! It's Jen from Out of This World Literacy! I hope everyone is having a fabulous summer relaxing and sleeping in. I know many of my friends are moving roles in this upcoming school year. Some are switching grades while others are stepping out of the classroom to fill specific leadership positions. As a Literacy Coach, I know what it's like to take that leap out of the classroom and into a specialist position. It. is. scary! Teachers who shift into a leadership role often leave the comfort and support of a grade-level team. They can sometimes feel like they are out there on their own island. Other teachers suddenly look at them differently...even though these teachers don't see themselves as a superior. They are not administrators, nor is their pay any different than when they were in the classroom. But, because of their new 'specialist' title, they are now looked at differently. I have some advice and tips for anyone who is stepping bravely out of the classroom and into a leadership role. Whether your new title is Reading Coach, Literacy Specialist, Interventionist, RTI Coordinator, or so on, I hope this list of advice can help you! TOP 10 TIPS FOR TEACHER SPECIALIST: 1. LISTEN, LISTEN, LISTEN! 2. Don't fall into the gossip traps 3. Think about the effects of your words before you speak 4. Ways to get on the teachers' good sides right away... a. Give stuff away at staff meetings! Don't hold on to all your classroom goodies! You don't have a classroom anymore! Make a FREE box and put it at the front door at the first staff meeting! b. Offer to come into classrooms, read a story, and introduce yourself to all the kids! Make a sign-up sheet for teachers so you can visit. It gives teachers a 20 minute break and it gets your foot in the door of all the classrooms! c. This last one is cheesy I know...but...SMILE! Be positive! A great attitude is contagious! And a smile can literally make someone's day. Whatever you're dealing with, smile, be positive, and that will go such a long way! 5. Be Patient! 6. Never trust teachers to read all their emails! If you have something important to share, chances are they will not read all their emails. You will likely need to send reminders. We all know how busy teachers are. Friendly reminders for meetings and so on are a must! :) 7. Always carry a calendar or ipad in the halls! Teachers will stop you and ask about things. They will ask you to come into the classroom, or send them something. It's hard to remember everything. Have something to write your quick hallway conversations down with! Otherwise, you will likely forget and unintentionally upset a teacher! 8.It's OK to say no! 9. Never act like you know everything! 10. Build yourself a layer of seriously thick skin! Special Education teachers are the masters of data collection! At times, collecting data can be overwhelming, especially when you sometimes have to outsource the collecting to other teachers, specialists, or teaching assistants. Tracking accommodations is necessary to make sure an IEP is being followed and can be helpful in determining which accommodations should be added to or removed from the IEP. Believe it or not, collecting data on accommodations and modifications does not have to consume your life! Share Information Be sure to share vital information with all teachers and assistants that work with your students. I have an accommodations organizer that I organize all of the information of my class. The information is in one place which is helpful for sharing information with assistants, special area teachers, and substitutes. When I first began teaching, I did not bother sharing such information with special area teachers until it was brought to my attention that a student of mine did not complete a test in physical education class. That student had trouble reading and was supposed to have his tests read. The PE teacher was unaware of his accommodations and therefore did not deliver them. I use a special form that reminds me of who needs to be informed of accommodations and modifications at the beginning of the school year and after an IEP annual review. Train Your Team If you have paraprofessionals in your classroom working with students, it is important to train them in how to deliver and how to track accommodations and modifications. Some interventions are more detailed than others. Observe your team while they are working with students and provide feedback as needed. The time you put in to properly train your team to record data the same way you would is so well spent! Use Checklists When I first started teaching, I used to write notes on a post-it that included which accommodations and modifications were used on assignments along with their effectiveness. It was very time consuming and often times, I forgot to add some things. Finally, I came up with a few checklists and forms to help the process. Level of Support One of the forms I use tracks the level of support a student needs from an adult. I use this one to determine the need for a 1:1 teaching assistant. It is useful before adding a TA and to collect data to see if continuing the intervention is a necessity. The adult that works with the student at that time fills it out while working with the student. Accommodations and Modifications Tracker I use this form two ways, depending on what I am collecting data for. As an IEP meeting approaches, I like to review the need for the interventions on the IEP. I can track the types of interventions are needed for different types of assignments and activities. More importantly, I can track the effectiveness of such interventions. I can also cut this tracker apart to staple it onto work samples. The work samples can be to show the Committee on Special Education the student's growth or regression. I also like to send work home with students with the form filled out from time to time so parents can see what kind of help the student needs in order to complete assignments at school. Frequency Tracker Another way I like to track the use of accommodations and modifications needed in school is with a frequency tracker I created. This gives me a quick visual of which interventions are being used and which are not. I focus on this during the weeks before a meeting so I can determine which accommodations and modifications need to remain, be added, or be removed from an IEP. Data collection is so important but it doesn't have to take over your entire life. Once you create a few checklists that fit your classroom or purchase one of the many checklists and charts from my TpT store, you will save yourself a ton of time and will have more data than you've ever had before!

Yesterday a dear friend of mine and a fabulous teacher shared her AMAZING organization skills. Check out her blog post HERE. :) Since my classroom is still in the works, I don't have too many fun organization pictures. I'm a strange mix of a Type A/B teacher. I am organized where it matters, but I also survive off sticky notes and throwing papers in a random file drawer. Everything is organized in my head but not-so-much to someone looking from the outside. Here's my big advice: It's easy to get caught up in what everyone else is doing. If you're not a super organized teacher, then that's cool if that works for you! Pick and choose what you need to do to make your classroom practical for your teaching style. Moving on to some tips and tricks I really want to share a few strategies that have worked for me and might work for your as well. Behavior Tracking with Post-it Notes: Since I am focused mostly on behaviors all day, I like to assign each student a color and then document or tally specific behaviors I am monitoring. I can then input the observations into my spreadsheet/log online and shred the sticky notes at the end of the day. It only takes about 5-10 minutes since I'm a fast typer. ;) The form itself is laminated, so I just replace the Post-it's every day. I provide one for my support staff as well. Mine is on a mini clipboard from Wal-mart, but this can work with a larger one as well with larger Post-its. I am still modifying the behavior tracking forms, so I don't have these ready to share, but once I do I will let you know. It is still an idea you can run with though. The plan, copy, prep, paperwork form is pretty self-explanatory. It can be downloaded HERE, if you are interested in using it. There are a couple options as well for those who need a space for grading over paperwork. It's an easy way to keep track of what you need to do. This form is also laminated, so I just replace the stickies as needed. TODAY AT A GLANCE Something that took me awhile to figure out was how I wanted to keep an outline of what I was teaching for the day. These pages are lifesavers when it comes to organization AND simplicity. These are available in my Teachers Pay Teachers store (also editable and there are a couple options for colors). You can write on them with a pen OR laminate and write on with a sharpie. It's easy to wipe off with a cleaning wipe (Clorox, Lysol etc.) SUBJECT TUBS This works so well because of my small class size. I'm able to place notebooks and folders in them as well as copies and activities for each subject area. Also self-explanatory but it keeps piles of worksheets off my desk which is what I basically did the last few years. What tips do you have for classroom organization?!
