I don't know if you have noticed, but I LOVE ROOM TRANSFORMATIONS! I probably love them more than my students do....and my students want them all the time! This one was new for me this year! I've always wanted to do an operating room, but didn't know exactly what standard I wanted to cover! Well, I finally figured it out (obviously)! ---------------------------------------------------- SET-UP & MATERIALS COVERING WALLS: Whenever you want to cover up your walls to transform your space, I highly recommend using tablecloths from the Dollar Tree! They are super light-weight and easy to hang up. I always hang them up with tacks. I have ceilings where tacks push in very easily and it takes no time at all. Typically it takes me between 45 minutes to an hour to cover 80% of my room and my room is LARGE. OPERATING ROOMS: To create the rooms, I hung up one tablecloth on each side. This help create a small space where students could feel like they were in separate operating rooms, but I was still able to see all students. LIFE-SIZED OPERATION CHARACTER: These were made from butcher paper. I taped a piece that would fit nicely on each table onto my SmartBoard and traced over a picture I found Google. Once I was done, I traced around my pre-made operation "organs" so that I knew they would fit. I DID NOT trace around the ones from the Google image. OPERATION ORGANS: I free handed them! I looked at the images online and copied! Of course they are larger than normal. I wanted them large enough so that students could write character traits on each one. I only made 9 out of the 13 on the original board game. See the picture below to see what I mean. STUDENT COSTUMES: I purchased everything from amazon and created the badges which are linked below. Gloves where provided by my school. All items where waiting for the students are their assigned operating room. -Face masks -Caps -My doctor outfit DOCUMENTS: Thank You, Ma'am The Scholarship Jacket (Mature words and content) Possibility of Evil Badges, doctor files, & patient files I made one for each group. I paced all of the stories, doctor, and patient directions on one clipboard and provided enough clipboards for each student in the group. PowerPoint Presentation-surgical room sounds -The first slide lasts for 50 minutes -Second slide has the flat-line video (Lasts for 15 seconds) -Third slide shows what the students need to do to save their patient (Lasts for 2 minutes) -Fourth slide goes back to the original beep. (SLIDES SWITCH BY THEMSELVES! All you need to do is click the start button of each video.) ---------------------------------------------------- CONTENT RL 3 Describe how the characters respond or change as the plot moves toward a resolution. Identifying character traits can be very tricky for students especially when they have to infer them and then tell me how a character's traits develops the plot. We practiced this skill for two weeks before I felt like they were ready for this transformation. The goal is that they demonstrate mastery of this standard. STEP ONE: Read the patient's file. This is a short story I provided each group. Now, I always teach to the top. I do not differentiate during transformations. I provide more assistance if need, which is rare. Kids can do amazing things when you give them the chance! Once the entire group finished reading (they read it together), they could move onto step two. STEP TWO: Identify the character's "symptoms" aka character traits. Student's analyzed the file for all the components to identify each trait (refer to the document linked at the bottom). I heard so many awesome conversations during this time. As student's diagnosed the patient, they would raise their hands and call Dr. Schrempp over (me). They would have to provide me the evidence from the file that support that diagnosis. If they were correct, they earned an organ! Then, the group would record the trait on the organ and translate it back into the patient's body. In the end, each operating room identified nine qualities. This part took about and hour and a half! BUT of course I had to add a little twist.... PATIENT FLAT-LINED: I made a timed PowerPoint that at about the hour mark the screen switched and all the sudden the flat-line sound went over our speakers. My student's FREAKED! Student's learned that their patients were dying and they only way they could save them was by solving the hard math problem that was on the board. They only had one minute to solve because the human brain only last about 3 minutes without oxygen. You can choose whatever problem you like! I'm all about rigor so my students had a nice long multi-operation expression. & I'm happy to say that all surgeons saved their patients. EARLY FINISHERS: I only had 2 out of the 4 groups finish about 20 minutes before the rest. You should always have a backup plan for when this happens. I used ReaditWriteitLearnit's character trait autopsy files from her TpT. I handed the task cards to each group and they worked on their already made person. Checkout the link for more details! I have provided all of my documents above. Please sure them as you please! I kept the parts for names editable so that you can add your own character names. Remember I have to rights to all of these documents. If you plan on using them, you must give me credit. Please tag me in your Instagram photos! I'd love to see this all in action!

Last week I shared one of my FAVORITE Pixar shorts "Mike's New Car" on Instagram as a way we practiced recording cause and effect relationships in our classroom. Although the number one way our students should practice reading skills is through their own books, my students REALLY enjoy when I throw a Pixar short at them to practice skills with. These shorts are SO SO cute and you can literally find one for EVERYTHING. I had LOTS of requests to share my favorite Pixar Shorts and skills they can be used with in the classroom. My BIGGEST suggestion to you is to simply watch any Pixar short you think you might want to use and decide what skill it would work best for. Most of them work for plot, but seriously just watch them! You will see SO many different ways they can be used! They are AWESOME and your kiddos will LOVE them. I also had lots of requests for the graphic organizers I use with these Pixar shorts in my classroom! I created a pack for you guys that contains over 20 different generic graphic organizers that can be used with any Pixar Short. The file has a PDF version if you want to be able to just print and go, and an editable version in case you'd like to add in some starting points for your kiddos before printing. Click HERE to check out this pack on TPT. Alright... now for the moment you've ALL been waiting for... a list of ALL the Pixar shorts I use and LOVE LOVE LOVE! I know I haven't included every single short out there, so if you see one missing that you love, let us know in the comments! Click here to grab the FULL list of Pixar shorts.

Hello everyone! Welcome to Kindergarten in Room 110! We are so excited to meet all of you and begin an amazing year together :) We have been working hard over the summer to prepare for a brand new classroom and create fun-filled activities to start the year off with a bang :) As you know, this is Gatestone's first year having Full-Day Kindergarten (FDK). There are many new changes that come with the new program and we are excited to share those with you! The first and most noticeable change you will see is the classroom environment. We have aimed to create a classroom that is, in our opinion, visually similar to one's home. In order to ease the transition of being at home all day and now coming to school 5 days a week, we wanted the classroom to feel like a second home for students, full of warm and neutral colours, greenery, and natural materials. Not only will this help with the transition, but it will also help students remain calm, self-regulated, and focused. We tried to stay away from bright, primary colours and store-bought posters. Posters bought at Scholar's Choice or the Dollar Store really don't mean anything to children, especially at this age. However, if students look and see their creations on the wall to demonstrate the same things a poster would, it becomes much more meaningful. We'd like to share with you some pictures of the transition that took place over the summer. Many hours went into creating our new classroom so we hope you like it! Inspiration The use of natural materials was a must. We loved the idea of using things we could find in nature. We also loved the idea of using brown kraft paper instead of bright-coloured fadeless paper. The black really pops! The picture frames with student work is also a fantastic idea :) Dollarama here we come! We loved the idea of having a wooden vase so of course we had to make one of our own! Miss Pliura also saw this decoration on the right at Roots- the whole store was an inspiration, really! Loved this idea for a writing centre. We purchased mini clipboards instead. How neat is this?! Jars with craft supplies in them is a beautiful way to showcase different colours. Before Mrs. Nighswander had a lovely classroom that was functional for her students. We loved the flow of her classroom and the sectioned off areas for different types of play. We wanted to keep this functionality while changing up the colour scheme. We are so fortunate to have a SMARTboard iRover in our class. We can move it to wherever we want! During We stripped the classroom bare, cleaned it from top to bottom, and began to set it up using new furniture and plenty of new classroom materials. We had a vision in our mind of what we wanted the classroom to look like; neutral tones, lots of greenery, and a minimalistic feel. We had to decide which furniture to keep and which was still useable. We were also getting some brand new furniture as well, such as a library shelf, work bench, and a storage unit. There was bulletin board glued onto the wall and peeled all the paint of with it. We didn't have any green paint left, so a light coloured brown was used instead (that's just the primer!) We aren't too sure how we were denied a new kitchen set, seeing as how the doors to the fridge would barely shut, so Miss Pliura took it home and sanded it down, used a wooden stain, and fixed the hinges (with plenty of help!). You can see on the left all the scuff marks it had. The picture on the right is what it looked like after sanding. You'll see the difference it made soon! We wanted the cork board and the chalk boards to match. Our original plan was to cover it all with kraft paper, like in the inspiration picture above. However, we couldn't keep it from creasing and it just didn't meet our expectations (see picture below) :P We found bulletin board contact paper that matched the original cork board perfectly, so we decided to use that on the chalk board to make it all match. We used white bins to fill up the cubbies you see on the right and used a black border to frame the bulletin boards. After We loved the idea of having some home decor as soon as you walk in the door. The tree trunk vase turned out great! Scrapbook pages filled with pictures will soon fill the holder on the left. Can we just talk about how amazing this kitchen set turned out!? It's beautifully sanded and appealing to the eye. We received some adorable pots and pans that resemble real life cooking tools - We think Dramatic Play will be a big hit! How great is this workbench? (with a real-life mini vise!) Students can use blocks, tools, and other classroom materials to make anything their little hearts desire :) Blueprints for blocks, anyone? As you can see, we're still working on putting up our alphabet, but soon these bulletin boards will be filled with words, child's names, etc. In the middle of our bulletin boards we have our animal character Reading Strategies which we will learn about throughout the year. We are also super lucky to have a SMARTboard, which is where all of our Literacy and Math lessons take place. The kids also have the chance to play on it during Learning Centres :) Did you notice the curtains? Not only do they look nice, but they also prevent little hands from touching things on the shelves during our important lessons. We got these adorable little chairs from IKEA; they are perfect for a comfy Book Nook where kids can sit down and read/browse through some books. We also received an iPod stereo where we will connect our iPod and students can listen to audio MP3s to certain books (the ones with the red stickers!) Lots of cozy stuffed animals and pillows to make them feel at home :) This is the beginning of our Science centre. We started off with just some small, natural materials along with some mirrors and magnifying glasses! Who doesn't love sand! The sand table will be lots of fun :) In our long IKEA shelf, we have stored Playdoh and our train set. In our storage unit, we have plenty of fun manipulatives for students to use. And last but not least, our Creative centre. Here, students can make beautiful pictures, write a letter, or build a crazy creation using all of our craft supplies (thanks, parents!). We are still waiting on our Art easel, and when that arrives, students will be able to paint here :) We hope you enjoyed this LONG post about our classroom transformation. We are so very proud of our classroom and can't wait to begin using it to learn, explore, and play. Have a great night! ~ Miss Pliura & Mrs. Tortola :)

This is an amazing art and math lesson that I got from a teacher at a conference who did teach a district over from me, but is now getting her PhD. She always had amazing stuff to present at conference. (You're amazing, Mary Franco!) Anyway, this lesson involves Paul Klee and multiplication. I made a little three page Smart Notebook lesson about Klee's work "Once Emerged From the Gray of Night" (where I used to show a poster of it) and have the students talk about what's more important--the words of the poem or the colors and composition? Then we talk about putting two things (like writing and art, or math and art together). It's SUCH an amazing lesson, here's a sneak peek: So, students get a little background knowledge of Klee, then we talk about tessellations and multiplication (and practice on the Smart Board). Then, students get a page of one-inch graph paper and write out a one digit by one digit multiplication problem with a two digit answer. I tell them to choose one that's hard for them to remember, or their favorite one. They then repeat that problem seven times, dropping down and over one square for 4 times, then down and back a square for three times, making them into interlocking tessellation shapes: After they've drawn it all out in pencil and I've checked it, they choose ONE color of fine-tip marker to trace it with, then use colored pencil or watercolor pencil to color. The coloring is a bit of a challenge for them, because they need to forget that they're numbers and only look at the space. They then color it in patterns/designs to make it visually interesting and play with people's minds ('math? I dont' see any math!') It's an awesome lesson that really challenges their thinking. This one really shows the patterns and designs. Oh, it's also important that their numbers COMPLETELY fill the one inch box of the graph paper. I always try to do this lesson at a time of the year when classroom teachers are complaining about students not remembering their math facts. I usually do it with fifth grade, but I did it with sixth one year at the teachers' request.
