My little sweeties are always forgetting to raise their hands for permission to speak out and it's been about to drive.me.plumb.CRAZY! Enter the handy, dandy ..... ("Did you say I can win a prize?") Blurt Chart! I saw this Blurt Chart awhile back and decided to whip one up. Mine is not as cute but it serves its purpose. Thank the good heavens! Here's how it works in my room. Each number represents a child. Beside each number I have one blank post-it note. The original chart I saw used 3 but I needed less to offer that more instant gratification feel for my little ones. Whenever someone blurts out they have to go remove the post-it beside their name. Whichever student is the last one with a post it left beside their name is the winner and gets a special treat! Do you ever have a problem with your students blurting?
If your child needs to work on beginning letter sounds, these turkey beginning letter sound sorts are such a fun way to practice doing it!
Four years ago when I took a leap of faith into an intervention position, I realized how few resources there were out there for reading and phonics intervention groups. I read SO many books about developmentally appropriate phonics and how to go through the proper foundational steps in order for students to master phonics and […]

I took a risk on such (what I thought was) an expensive resource, but my goodness gracious it has come through like a clutch! My kiddos are intrigued and challenged. Work on retelling the Gingerbread Man with your kindergarten and first grade students with this Gingerbread Man retelling bracelet!
This fun environmental print activity is used in September to jump start our reading. Most of my kindergarten students say "I can't read!" And I prove them wrong with this environmental print project. It gives them the confidence to understand that letters come together to make words and that you can be a good reader by looking at the picture or symbol that goes along with the word to figure it out. These are environmental words/symbols they have seen and are usually familiar with. They CAN read!!! Environmental Print Parent Letter I send home a parent letter (click here for free download) asking for examples of environmental print. We use these to make a chart to use in our classroom. We talk about the beginning sounds of these words, how many letters they have, and practice sorting them by color, beginning letter, places/food/toys, etc. Students cut out their own environmental print pictures and practice reading/sorting them independently. They talk to friends to tell how they sorted the pictures. Then we make an environmental print student reader. Students pick the environmental print cards they want to glue onto their paper and use writing skills to write "I can read" and glue the environmental print picture into the box provided. This activity is great for working on the sight word can! Then, students find a friend to "buddy read" their sentences to. They loved this activity! Click here to download

So I am happily linking up with Farley over at Oh'Boy for Currently! I'm gonna double dip because I like a new little Monday linky so much. But I'll hold that till the middle so keep scrolling! I know I am LUCKY that the hubby does all the laundry. I have to help get it all down stairs and then it is also my job to put away, but he washes, dries, and folds. SO I can handle the put away! I took the little one to urgent care yesterday because she sky rocketed to 104 temp Saturday night. Also her throat looked dreadful. So looks like a touch of strep or tonsillitis. But we got some antibiotics down her and she is good as new. She is still a bit tired but that is all!! So glad it ended quickly. Don't you just hate when your kiddos are sick?? Sissy's birthday party is Saturday morning at the local children's farmstead. I have a TON to do to get ready!! SO today will be a busy day and I am sure it will continue through the week!! Now you see the desire for boots! Farm cowboy theme party!! Needing lesson plans finished! Have the week planned, but need to put it all on paper! Also no time for a pedi with my to do list but just need someone to stop by and slap a coat of paint on!! Lastly for my heart I need to get back to working out! So much easier to squeeze in a workout in the summer. But I feel so good when I get it in!! The organized thing....For me I start the school year and feel super put together and ready to go, then the year goes on and the unfiled paper pile gets higher and the staplers disappear...Anyone else feel my pain? So my goal is to keep up with all the organizing I put in place!! Now my post within a post! Linking up with a new linky that I really like! Here is my little motivation for Monday!!! I have finally converted my hubby to be a Duck Dynasty lover!! So let's not let Si down! Be a teacher that makes a difference Jack!! Much Love Autumn & Ruth
Morning Meeting is one of my favorite parts of the day. We have to start our day with it, or our day just isn't quite the same. Morning meeting is the time in which we start our day on a positive note, share with one another, go over what's happening that day, review rules and expectations, complete calendar, sing, and spiral review. It's packed full of fun! I have morning meeting files for ten months of the year, August through May. I will take you through the May Morning Meeting just to give you an idea of what we do in my classroom. I get lots of questions about how I display my morning meetings, since they are digital files. I do not have a SMART board, sadly. I just have a PC and a projector that projects onto a regular screen. My files are all PowerPoint files, so they are easily editable. There are slides that you may want to write on. So, what you can do is freeze the image with your remote and write on it that way if you have a Mobi like I have above. Or you could project it onto your dry erase board and write that way. You may have a way better idea though! We always start our morning meeting by telling each other "hello" and by sharing positive thoughts or something from the night before. I choose a student to go over our whole brain classroom rules. We also go over one of the essentials from Ron Clark's Essential 55. Afterwards, we sing our monthly song! I always have a themed song linked, as well, in the bottom corner. We do calendar during this time, too. It's a link to Starfall's calendar, so it's interactive. You can add student birthdays, special events, and who lost a tooth to that calendar. The students love getting to be apart of creating our calendar! I choose a meteorologist each day to check the weather outside. I choose by randomly pulling out a student number from this little bucket. Green side up means I haven't yet chosen those students. Red side up means they have already been chosen. They take my karaoke microphone to the door to give their weather report to the class. They take this job very seriously! There's also a link to check the temperature and the upcoming forecast. After the weather report, we graph our findings. Each day, we are getting to analyze data, which is great practice! I also include several slides for number of the day. These are the slides that you would want to write on! Secret Number is a class favorite! This is a great way to incorporate some review. I choose a number in my head and then give the students clues. Such as, it's less than 50, great than 40, an even number, and has a 6 in the ones place. What is my number? I give them one clue at a time, and we mark out the numbers that can be eliminated after each clue. Each month includes different slides that hit a first grade standard for review purposes. These are the ones that you could totally customize to fit what you are covering. This slide in particular covers retell and a writing standard, while incorporating some science. I always include a link to the stories on Starfall, which are great for hitting your phonics rule and practicing a reading skill or strategy. Finally, we end with a song! I get asked a lot about time. I spend 15-20 minutes on morning meeting. It's quick! I do not hit all of the slides each day; I pick and choose. You may have more and less time, but I promise you can make it work! I sell these First Grade Morning Meeting files separately by the month, or you can save by purchasing them as a bundle for the entire year. Do you do morning meeting in your classroom? I would love to hear all about it!
Getting ready for the week. I am working feverishly on my homework this week, so I didn’t get my picture done. But I did have a chance to snap a few pictures of my centers for this week! So I am going to link up with Deedee at So our centers for this week are: Pilgrim Tally Marks, students identify the numbers on the girls apron and write the number in the circle. My kids are ROCKING at CVC words right now! They have to identify the word on the turkey and stretch it out and write it in the boxes. Dessert Sounds, my kids have to identify the picture and write a sound (beginning or end sound depending on your students ability) This one is a little different than my other centers, the students have to identify if the corn or pumpkins have more, then write the number in the circle. And my favorite, cute little Indian boys with sight words, the students identify the sight word, and write it in the box. These are all in my “I am Thankful” unit. I hope you have a great Sunday, and if you have tomorrow off, don’t rub it in
