Hello my friends, it's easy to create a Valentine's theme when your kitchen is mostly red and white. That's the case with our basement kitchen. It's been almost 4 years since we finished our basement. I wanted it to have a farmhouse feel, so I opted for some open shelving. I filled them with mostly white dishes, striving for a simplistic look. For Christmas I added a lot of red and green. When I began to change it up afterwards I thought, why not leave the red out until after Valentines Day. A sweet heart, a gift from a blog/Instagram friend was tucked into one of the bowls. My love for polka dots and checks remains evident. (wink) I've always had a thing for vintage tins as well. Just something about the fabulous graphics! More reds that make my heart swoon! And I've never met a cherry that I didn't like. :) And that leads me to my new purchase from Hobby Lobby. Big, gorgeous red cherries. I placed them on the kitchen table along with a jar full of cookie cutters. A couple heart ones were pulled out for display. The cute checkered placemats were a Christmas gift from myfriend, Amanda. I snagged this bench at a yard sale. I painted it red and added the grain sack stripe and number. I've mentioned that I am helping with an estate sale. I've been pretty good at not buying alot, but there are a few things that I just couldn't pass up. One of them were these cute trivets. The S&P/sugar set belonged to my hubbies grandmother. And look at this giant rolling pin. I tried hard to resist it!! Just couldn't after my friend, Joanne placed it on top of my hoosier. Now I need to elevate my red & white enamelware. See that darling scalloped paper? I brought it home from Portugal. Now you know how this girl rolls. (pun intended). Hello my friends, as some of you may know; I am not a huge chocolate lover. Oh yes, I enjoy a bit of chocolate now and then, but when it comes to cake, ice cream, and even chocolate. I prefer white over brown. :) BUT cherries and chocolate together. . .now that's another story! My friend, Joanne bought the cutest assortment of vintage cherry chocolate boxes off of e-bay last year. I think she has 6 of them. Each one was so stinking cute! Needless to say, I was full of envy. (wink) I couldn't help myself from looking to see what was available this year. This sweet thing caught my eye. I bid the minimum amount and was quite surprised when I won it. Especially since there were 3 others watching. Isn't it the sweetest? Something about biting into a cherry chocolate. It's a little explosion of happiness in your mouth! I must say, it looks rather fabulous on my Pioneer Woman jadite cake stand. If you've ever stepped into my basement kitchen you know I have a weakness for anything cherry themed. Last week I ran into Hobby Lobby for some floss. That's when I spied this cherry garland. So then, Viola! A cherry themed Valentine mantle was born. For you chocolate lovers, a piece of chocolate cake with a cherry on top! A sweet blog and Instagram friend made and sent me the darling heart last year. Are you familiar with Laurie from Magpie Ethyl? She creates the cutest things! This little cherry girl is one. I ordered her a few years ago. She gives so much attention to the details. Love her sweet face and the little cherries on her button. I wonder if this box of chocolates had a cherry or two inside? And what on earth does this mushroom have to do with a cherry themed mantle? Absolutely nothing! The cherry garland wasn't long enough to reach the end of my mantle, so I needed something cute to anchor it to. The other side is tucked under my cake stand. Along with the cherry garland I hung a small red and white pom pom garland and a bead garland. I found a bag of red beads at our local thrift for $.75 cents. Quick and easy to string them on jute. Of course we need a few Valentines on a Valentine mantle! I stacked a couple of my cake carriers on the hearth. The top one I won on a give away a few years ago from Cindy at Old Time Farmhouse She always has cute things to sell in her shop. The other carrier I bought at a vintage flea market. One year I made Valentines to hang on some of my vintage treasures. I have this fun printers cabinet on my hearth as well. It has fabulous green chippy paint on the sides. I love it, but it's hard finding things to put inside it. I added some old doorknobs and a few Valentines. This ruby red lipped gal is a head vase. The estate I helped with had tons of head vases. This is the only one I bought. So there you have it, my cherries and chocolate Valentines mantle. Now I need to go eat a cherry chocolate! Really wish I had one right now. It was bound to happen sooner or later. I've made four desserts in the last seven days and hope to make another one in the next day or two... the new one to take to the thrift shop for the volunteers. I just have to figure out what it will be. Last week when we went to the grocery store I bought two bags of frozen whole pitted sweet cherries. I didn't really have a recipe in mind, but they looked so tempting on the picture on the bag I decided I would probably find something to use them for. There's always a smoothie as an idea. Well, it didn't take me long to find a recipe in my cookbook, Art of Amish Cooking for Cherry Pudding. I was prepared this time when I saw the word "pudding" to not expect a creamy sweet dessert. Mrs. Ada Yoder of Iowa used 2 cups cherries (pie cherries). When I tried to measure the large frozen cherries, I decided to just use the whole 16 - oz bag. I laid them out on a dinner plate in a single layer to thaw some while I was mixing up the "pudding". I hadn't prepared my husband so when I asked him if he wanted some of the Cherry Pudding, he said yes. Even though it wasn't what he expected, he did eat some and said it was good, but they should have called it something else besides "pudding". 😁 CHERRY PUDDING 3/4 cup sugar 2 tablespoons butter or shortening (I used butter that I softened to room temperature) 2 eggs 1/2 cup milk 2 cups flour 2 teaspoons baking powder Pinch of salt 2 cups cherries (pie cherries) (I used a 16-oz bag of frozen sweet pitted cherries, thawed slightly.) Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Spray a 2 quarts - 8 x 11 - inch baking dish. Mix sugar and butter til smooth, then add eggs and milk. (I changed to a whisk from my wooden spoon.) Sift flour, baking powder, and salt and add to sugar mixture. Add cherries and stir up well. Spread in baking dish and bake 40 to 45 minutes or till set in the center. Cool before cutting. Serve with sweet milk (or ice cream). Store covered in the refrigerator. 3rd graders have been working on their artome projects - and this time they're making Japanese cherry blossom paintings! I've seen this lesson a million times over on Pinterest.. and decided to give it a whirl (I believe it originated from A Faithful Attempt). We began by looking at a powerpoint that I put together that contained a ton of images of cherry blossoms, a little background on Hanami (a traditional Japanese custom of enjoying the cherry blossoms in bloom) and the 'National Cherry Blossom Festival' (an American festival held in Washington D.C. in remembrance of the occasions in which Japan gave the United States thousands of cherry blossom trees as a symbol of friendship). Students started their art by tracing a circle shape onto their papers with a pencil, and then using liquid watercolors to paint the area around the circle (they could choose either a warm or cool color scheme). The next day they painted in their tree branch with tempera paint. Then finally on the third day, they painted their blossoms (making sure that each blossom had 5 petals!) with tempera paint. During our spare time (after painting branches on day two) we also created some kirigami cherry blossoms out of some extra scrapbooking paper I had.
