At the middle school level, the focus is on the following symbiotic relationships: predator-prey, mutualism, parasitism and commensalism. In a predator –prey relationship, one organism hunts, captures and consumes another organism (prey). The prey typically has adaptations that help them avoid predation. Examples of organisms in a predator-prey relationship are lion/zebra and polar bear/seal. In a mutualistic relationship, both organisms benefit. Examples of mutualism are clownfish/sea anemone and aphids/ants. Over time two organisms may evolve into one organism, as seen with lichens. Lichen is a plant where strands of algae have linked to the roots and branches of fungus. Together these organisms conduct photosynthesis and obtain minerals from the ground. In this situation, what was once a mutualistic relationship has evolved into a single organism. In a parasitic relationship, one organism (the parasite) benefits and the organism (the host) is harmed. Examples of parasitism are botfly/humans and dodder/shrub. In commensalism, one organism benefits and the other one neither benefits nor is harmed. Examples of commensalism are flatworm/horsecrab and cattle egrets/cattle.

Includes: 2 Graphic Organizers, Greatest Common Factor and The Distributive Property, Sample Problems and Task Cards ***No Prep Product*** Do your students struggle to find the connection between Greatest Common Factors and the Distributive Property. This resource walks students through the process of creating equivalent expressions step by step. Do you teach students who are working below grade level, have learning disabilities or students who are struggling to learn English? This lesson plan allows you to go step by step using the gradual release model. You will (I Do) model a problem while students take notes on a graphic organizer. Together (We Do) solve simple problems using only the algorithm. Then you give students the task cards(You Do). The problems on the task cards may be solved individually or in groups.. I give my students 2-3 minutes per card and switch. Then we go over the problems on the task cards and allow the students to do most of the talking. You will be impressed with the results. Teaching students to use the distributive property can be challenging. These lessons make it very simple. These lessons review using the rules of divisibility to find common factors and the GCF. Then the students learn how to take the GCF and factor the expression. To end the unit I have included a set of practice problems. Contains answer keys and teaching notes for easy presentation
