Slacker-A Rare Original Vintage Movie Poster for Richard Linklater's Episodic Tale of Random Events in 1990s Austin, Texas. Employing a series of linear vignettes, Slacker presents a day in the life of Austin, Texas following social outcasts, misfits, and Twenty-something slackers. These characters don't fit into establishment norms and move seamlessly from one scene to the next, randomly coming and going into one another's lives. In an astonishing debut, Director Richard Linklater throws out the rules of traditional moviemaking. There's no star, in fact, there is no central character. The camera simply flows fluidly from one chance encounter to the next and although the structure appears aimless, the film remains thematically focused throughout. Highlights include a UFO buff who adamantly insists that the U.S. has been on the moon since the 1950s, a woman who produces a glass slide purportedly of Madonna's pap smear, and an old anarchist who sympathetically shares his philosophy of life with a robber. If you've ever been to Austin or spent a sleepy summer in a college town you'll appreciate the parade of pseudo-intellectuals and good-natured conspiracy theorists that provide much of the grist for the script. Although it looks (and sounds) entirely improvised, every scene was carefully scripted and choreographed, and the result is one of the more unique and original American features of the last forty years.
