A inceput sa lucreze in aer liber si sa realizeze mici compozitii, experimentand diverse tehnici. Prefera ca in mijlocul naturii sa faca doar schite, care serveau apoi ca punct de plecare pentru tablourile de mari dimensiuni, realizate in atelier. Participa pentru prima data la Salon in 1864, cu doua peisaje, si va fi o prezenta permanenta la aceasta expozitie oficiala pana in 1874, anul primei expozitii organizate de grupul impresionist. Il cunoaste pe Edouard Manet in 1868, iar in 1874 se casatoreste cu Eugene Manet, fratele mai mic al artistului. Il convinge pe Manet sa incerce sa lucreze in aer liber si il atrage treptat in cercul impresionist. Cu toate acestea, in calitatea sa de artist impresionist, Morisot incerca sa picteze imaginile vietii cotidiene, fragmente realitatii mereu in derulare. In 1894, famed art critic Gustave Geffroy described Berthe Morisot, Marie Bracquemond, and Mary Cassatt as "les trois grandes dames" (the three great ladies) of the Impressionist movement. Born into a wealthy bourgeois family from Bourges, France, Berthe Morisot

Berthe Morisot, Bourges 1841 - Paris 1895 Unter dem Orangenbaum - Under the orange tree (1889) The Nelson Atkins Museum of Artm Kansas City, Missouri, USA Berthe Morisot was probably the greatest female artist in the Impressionist movement and showed in all but one of the Impressionist exhibitions. This painting represents her daughter Julie (who also appears in Renoir's "Flowered Hat"), who became her favorite subject in the last two decades of her life. Julie appears in the garden of Morisot's winter home near Nice in the south of France. The setting is an exotic one with over-arching orange trees and Julie's pet green parrot in a birdcage to the left. As a well-off bourgeois woman (and therefore subject to rules of suitable public behavior), Morisot was unable to travel around Paris without an escort and, as a result, focused largely on domestic scenes.
