Welcome to the Wednesday 6! If you missed the first one, this is my new series (every other week) featuring ideas that totally inspire me. I'm so excited to share someone really special with you today, Shannon from Burlap & Lace. Not only is she a creative genius with major style, but she's sweet and hilarious, too. I've asked Shannon to share her fave 6 projects with us today, and boy, did she deliver! I know you're gonna love 'em! Hi LiveLoveDIY-ers! I'm Shannon from Burlap and Lace. I'm so excited to be posting here on Virginia's blog! I love her, and her beautiful home. She's basically my spirit animal, which is a lot coming from a crazy cat lady. It's almost like we share the same mind. I'm not sure if that's cool or scary. We'll go with cool. :) Anyway, Virginia asked me to share my six favorite projects as a part of her Wednesday 6 series! So here we go! (ahem...Virginia speaking. Tomorrow is my 30th birthday. I've never been anyone's spirit animal before, and I will take this as a sign that my thirties are gonna be awesome. Thank you, Shannon. Continue on...Sorry for the interruption.) First up is my TV Gallery Wall. I just collected frames from yard sales, thrift stores, and IKEA to create a large focal point to surround the TV. I figured that a TV is inevitable (if my husband has anything to say about it), so I might as well try to make it blend in with a gallery wall! I only had two rules when it came to creating this bad boy. #1: I stuck with silver, gold, black, or white frames and #2: I only framed things that I absolutely loved! I don't believe in color coordinating art on the wall. Find what you love and display it! I also painted the feet gold on an old dresser to make a TV console. You gotta work with whatcha got! (Pardon....it's me again. I just want to let ya'll know that Shannon's gallery wall & gold dipped footsies have sent me down a wormhole of inspiration. Ya'll know I love a gallery wall. And also, I'm pretty sure that's the same dresser that's in my bedroom. How very delightful. I promise to be quiet now.) My second favorite project is my DIY Spotted Art. I love to paint, and I love this spotted pattern that has been popping up everywhere, so I created my own! I just spray painted some cheap poster frames gold, and popped the art in them without a mat. They make a huge statement without being too bold! One of my favorite places in my house is my bar cart. I would say that it was my favorite place, but that would make me sound like a lush. :) This art makes the whole space a little prettier! It's so easy to create your own art to save money and to be creative. I did it in my living room, too! One of the easiest projects I've ever done is my DIY Pantone Paint Chip Memo Board. I gathered some Pantone paint chips in pink shades, and used double sided tape to adhere them to white paper. Then I popped it in a frame, and wrote on the glass with a white erase marker! I use it to write down my goals for the week, but you could use it as a calendar, a menu planner, or even a grocery list. So so easy, and it only cost me $4! One of the boldest decisions I ever made was to paint an entire hallway chalkboard paint. This happened late at night, and I did it before I could change my mind. I'm so glad I did! I use it all the time to doodle on, and our friends love it. We love entertaining, and I always decorate the wall with whatever the theme of the night is. Functionality aside, I also love how the black really contrasts with the rest of the house. I loved it so much, I also painted an entire wall in my office with chalkboard paint! This is definitely something that Virginia and I have in common- don't you love her chalkboard cabinets?! Another project that I love is my faux malachite tray. I love love love malachite, and emerald is the Color of the Year for 2013! What I don't love about malachite, however, is the hefty price tag. So I decided to make my own! I primed a clearance tray that I found at Target, and went to town brushing and scraping green and black paint together to create the marbled effect. It was a lot easier than I thought, and with a glossy coat of lacquer on top, it almost looks like the real thing! You can't beat it for a few dollars! In addition to DIY projects, I also have a weekly How To series on how to achieve the glossy magazine look in your own home. I find that a lot of my clients have trouble choosing the right sized rug, arranging pillows on your bed, and even displaying art in your home. But my favorite "How To" is my tips and tricks on pattern mixing! It's something that everyone has questions about, but let's be honest...who doesn't love bright colors and patterns? I'm a neutral gal at heart, but sometimes I gotta let loose every once in a while. And these are so fun! So that's a round up of my six favorite projects from my blog, Burlap and Lace! Make DIY Texture Paste! 2 Great Recipes for making this craft supply at home, plus how to use it. Tutorial by Rebecca Parsons.

Here is the layout I made last month, in this l/o I listed things that I'd like to improve on (eating a proper breakfast, getting more exercise etc.) I think that as scrappers we tend to stay behind the camera instead of infront of it and sometimes may shy away from getting our photo's taken. Here are some tips on getting a good photo of yourself for your layouts and your avatar pics'..... PHOTO TIPS: I know that half the battle of this challenge will be getting a photo that we are happy with. Here are a few tips in getting a good shot: ~ OVER EXPOSE YOUR PHOTO ~ For the layout (above) I took a photo I was fairly happy with and decided to change it to sepia tones to coordinate better with the papers I used. BUT when I changed it to sepia, the small sun freckles on my face looked like an aweful rash!! To fix it I 'overexposed' the photo. This is an old 'Hollywood Glam' trick. You'll notice that in all the old B&W pic's of Marlynn Monroe, Rita Hayworth, Vivian Lee......mainly all you see are their main features.....eye's, nose, mouth....that's it! no blemishes, wrinkles, lines.....just blank clear skin. This is achieved by over exposing your photo. Most photo editing software will have a place were you can adjust the exposure. Just keep brightening the photo until you've achieved the look you want (you can also 'darken the darker area's' to get even more contrast). ~ TRY TAKING YOUR PHOTO FROM A SIDE ANGLE ~ taking a photo from a side angle can give a softer prettier look and will open up the eyes more. (I really don't have very large eyes, but in the photo above they 'show' well because of the side angle). ~ HOLD THE CAMERA HIGHER ABOVE YOUR HEAD ~ when taking a photo of yourself, hold the camera at a higher angle, this will reduce the 'double chin' effect that you may get with a head on shot. ~ LIP GLOSS ~ This is a trick I learned from Heidi Swapp!! She always carries a little bottle of lip gloss in her purse for photos (not just of herself but her children too!) ....I'm not talking about deep colored lip gloss, just something to add a little shine to the lips. I get my girls to put a little bit of a light pink lip gloss on before I take a portrait shot, you'd be surprised in the difference it will make to give a photo more 'life'! ~ TRY CHANGING THE COLOR TO BLACK & WHITE/OR SEPIA ~ Sometimes you might think a photo of you is 'okay' but you want something a little more glamorous. Try changing your photo to black & white or sepia (most photo-editing software have this feature...I believe you can also perform this task in Piscassa....a free online photo-editing site) ~ USE A WHITEBOARD TO CAST AN EVEN BRIGHT GLOW ON YOUR FACE ~ If you have assistance in taking your photo, this can be a nice little trick to get an even cool light on your face. Have someone stand in front of you holding a large piece of white board, beside the photographer (you can use a large piece of white bristol board for this) ....it will reflect a nice even light on your face. ~ CROPPING ~ For a different look, try cropping your photo in an unusual way. Cropping show that only half your face shows, or only your eyes, or a feature of your face that you really like!....this can give a nice 'artsy' look to your photo. Hope this helps in getting us to see more layouts of my favourite people! TOMBOW sent the girls from Bo Bunny some amazing adhesives to work with this month! I'm thrilled today to be a guest at Crafting by Designs, a fun and inspiring challenge blog. The theme for this challenge is Vintage, and you all know that's my jam. I was inspired to play with Distress Oxide inks and some of Tim Holtz's new Ideaology products. For this card I tinted texture paste as described in my article HERE. I used one of Tim's new stencils. This is one of my favorite stencils of his ever! I layered the paper dolls with his new floral cutouts, which have the butterflies included. The sentiment is from his new Quote Chips. I love these so much!!! The jumbo size rocks my boat. The stamp at the bottom is also Tim's from an older release, which I picked up for a song at HL. For this card I did a stencil monoprint with DOX over an DOX inky background. I really loved the accentuated chalkiness on the monoprint. I used the same collage elements, but the result is entirely different than the first card, however just as fun. I hope you enjoyed seeing these, thanks for your visit! This post is in conjunction with the Art 'n Soul Newsletter article "Technique of the Week" This post is less of a technique and more about trying out the new Distress Oxide inks. I was skeptical in the beginning, but now I know I LOVE these new inks. Oxide inks are a hybrid of Pigment ink and Dye ink. Where Dye inks soak into your paper, Pigment inks sit on top and take longer to dry. The Oxides have the best of both of these worlds. They blend like a dream, and they stamp better as well. They also incorporate the best of the water-reactive properties of regular Distress ink. there are 12 colors currently available, and Ranger is overwhelmed with orders, so we have to get in line; but we WILL get them in! Right now we have 8 of the 12 colors for demo'ing at Art 'n Soul, and we will be happy to demo them for you. For my card, I first blended Fossilized Amber, Spiced Marmalade, Fired Brick, and Broken China, adding a little Wilted Violet at the end. I sprayed the card, using the Tim Holtz spritzer bottle, which makes large and small droplets. You can almost do no wrong with these inks, whatever I have done looks good. However, I wanted to stamp and emboss with White Diamond embossing powder, and I decided that my inks were a little too light for the white to pop out properly. This panel is actually very pretty in real life, and it is at Art 'n Soul for you to see Starting over with new colors was no problem, because playing with these inks is just so much fun. For the second try, I started with Wilted Violet. I added Broken China (I LOVE the combo of these 2 colors), Cracked Pistachio, and Spiced Marmalade. Since the inks have pigment, they are so easy to blend If you compare the colors side by side to regular dye based Distress colors, they will look just a little different. This is because these Oxide colors with pigment sit on top of the paper, and the regular dye based ones soak in. I spritzed it to get the water spots, and decided it was still too pale. I made sure to dry the spots and went over the card with some Faded Jeans, Fired Brick, and intensified the colors in the Wilted Violet, Broken China, and Cracked Pistachio. I love how rich the colors are This time I thought the colors were dark enough, and so I added more droplets with the spritzer, and dried the card thoroughly. I stamped my image and sentiment with Versamark ink and embossed with White Diamond embossing powder by JudiKins. I added a little of the Wilted Violet to the center of the largest flower in the stamp. I hope you'll give these new inks a try. I think you'll find them as fun to work with as I did. Welcome to my first post of the day - there is another in a few hours. We have a new challenge at A Vintage Journey where we are doing - Monochromatic. Well I decided to do Distress Monochromatic! It has been a while since I have done a tag and had a good distress play - so when I went to a crop recently I just took everything blue. I was playing around - there are actually 5 tags - I will share the other 2 later. As I was getting messy I scribbled on the back what I had done and as I knew I was going to mount them I recorded the details when I got home - so here is a little chart. This is just for the backgrounds, not the embellishing. I also took to the crop a load of scraps lying around my desk - things I had stamped or die cut and not used. As long as they could be made blue I wanted to use them. I added some cogs, die cut letters, butterfly and game spinner. I added fabulous wildflower die cuts - after painting with distress paints, a little wooden butterfly, some tissue tape and sentiment. I stamped on this one as it didn't have texture paste and added some more wildflowers and the travelling bird from one of Tim's older stamp sets. Finished. Done. No more pages to fill, ready for it's permanent place in history! Today i wanted to post a bunch of art. My schedule has been so crazy, you are probably wondering where my art has been??!! I absolutely, create every day, mostly in my drawing journals. Here's half a book, enjoy! I completely filled my little my little green Handbook journal this weekend. The book has 128 toothy pages which means that i illustrated 256 pages! Here are about 70 of those pages. Can you imagine this blog post if i had ALL 256 pages posted! That's a lot of cawfee sipping as you scroll through the pages! Many of the pages are my brainstorms and ideas for projects, classes and workshops. Lots of watercolor in this journal. This particular brand of journal, Handbook loves paint and marker! It's my favorite for bright, vibrant color. Love the little pocket in the back that you can store your treasures. The elastic band is great for wrapping it all up! And so, it's a wrap! …it's on to the next one, "My Little Red Journal". So many fresh blank pages awaiting my artful wisdom...

The November kit has been a favorite for me! I love the color palette of the featured papers, Kaisercraft's Rustic Harmony. It appeals to my love of vintage scrapping! This layout features one of my favorite subjects, sometimes not so sweet Tisha! Peggy and the girls gave Tisha a nickname when they visited me back in September, Me-Me. Why Me-Me? Well 'cause in Tisha's mind, it's all about me. She insists on being the center of attention and will joyfully push poor Noodle out of the way so that she is getting all the petting and treats! I wanted to add some sparkle to my layout so I dabbled a bit of paint and Stickles on the Kaiseercraft roses that came in the flower add on and then nestled the flowers in a vine from the Swirlydoos Boutique to create my floral cluster. This vines are just leaves and are perfect for creating your own cluster. There are 5 different but similar vines in the store, you really need some of these! ;-) These letters came in the embellishment add on and I just inked over them a tad and then outlined the edges with a gold Sharpie pen. For this layout I used a really vintage photo from my husband's side of the family. I used some borders from the sticker sheet in the main kit on the edges of my layout and layered some texture from my stash underneath. I used Art Anthology's Stone Effects in Sandstone to do some stenciling in the background. The brown flowers are from a previous kit and the others are from my stash. That's a Creative Embellishments swirl underneath the photo embossed with Shimmerz EnamelZ Molten Metal embossing powder, both from my stash. And last, a simple layered card. I used some Core'dinations cardstock for the card. Then I layered on the green floral paper that I diecut with a Spellbinder's die, added a tag, a sentiment sticker, a few embellies and all done! It is that time again... my family has a plethora of birthdays and anniversaries over the summer months. I have been working on some artful sentiments to send. I invite you to create along with me, as I demonstrate how to make your own delicate hand-painted, butterfly collage art card. 1. Using a copyright free image or photograph of a butterfly, transfer the image to a piece of typing/copy paper via your computer and printer or a copier. 2. Cut a small piece of 200-thread count bleach muslin fabric slightly larger than the butterfly, and lay the fabric over the image. 3. Using a mechanical pencil, trace the outline of the butterfly onto the fabric. 4. Be sure to capture any important details shown, such as the body or large wing markings. 5. Using your favorite acrylic paints, select colors that match the butterfly image. Apply paint to the fabric, remembering to wash your brush thoroughly when changing to a new color. 6. Once you finish painting your image, take a pair of sharp, small scissors and carefully cut the butterfly out. 7. Be sure to trim close enough to remove all traces of the unpainted bleached muslin fabric around the outside of the wings and body. 8. Now gather a blank greeting card, envelope, and miscellaneous collage materials such as vintage papers, lace, other fabrics. 9. Arrange the various collage materials and attach to the front of the blank greeting card using paste or double stick tape. 10. Stitch your painted butterfly to the collaged greeting card using a needle and thread. One or two stitches is enough to hold the butterfly securely in place. Congratulations!. Layered stamps create a simple but stunning handmade card

Hello everyone and thank you so much for taking the time to drop in here. Today I am sharing a step by step that I created for the latest challenge over at A Vintage Journey: The theme is Add some Texture and below is a project that shows how you can add texture in different ways. I created a folder for two size 10 tags, made out of two DL sized envelopes. Below I show you with pictures how I put it together, it's easy and very effective I think. To cover the outside I took a piece of the new Tim Holtz Kraft resist papers from the Motifs pack. I took one of the Kraft coloured papers, cut it to 8.75 by 8.75" (22.2cm) and covered it with a layer of Gesso, the resist still shows through a bit, which I like as it adds a subtle bit of texture. Next I added some texture paste through some Layering Stencils on the right side, and just a thin layer Crackle Paste on the left side into which I stamped with an old text stamp. On the picture it says "embossing folder", really it should say Layering Stencil, sorry about that... A little more texture on the top right: Now a quick note on these pastes: I recently purchased both the Wendy Vecchi texture and crackle pastes and they are fantastic! Then while clearing out some old stuff from my stash, I found some really old Dreamweaver texture and crackle pastes that I have had for years, and you know what, they are absolutely identical, - so if you happen to have some old ones, don't bother to get the new ones. The Wendi Vecchi ones are made by Dreamweaver and truly, they are the same and even though I had not used mine for years they were perfect still and probably a whole lot cheaper.... Ok, on to my project. The next step was to add some colour with Distress Paints, colours listed below. I wanted to try and achieve a soft look for my paper, to emulate the look of the Wallflower paper collection. I stamped my favourite butterflies from the Papillion set onto tissue paper and also took two scraps of the top layer of a paper serviette and adhered them with Glue n Seal, I also added some stenciling with Distress Inks. Below is a close up where you can see how by adding a bit more paint with your fingers you can blend the tissue seamlessly into the background: By now I folded the paper in half length wise as that is how it would fit around the envelopes. I also added some more stamping and stenciling: Now for the inside, I decided to use the actual Wallflower papers for that. First I lined the inside of the envelopes, by measuring carefully and cutting the angles to help slide the paper inside the envelopes: Next I took another envelope and cut it apart to create a template to line around the opening of the envelopes, you'll see in a moment what I mean: I used this template to cut two other bits of the wallflower papers, but not before having added some more texture with one of the Texture Fades embossing folders. Below you will see it all glued in place: As you can see, I also added a little more stenciling.. To add the cover to the outside of the envelopes, I first added a bit of dyed seam binding to each side to be able to tie my folder shut and then simply glued the cover around the outside of the envelopes: Now onto the tags: I used two #10 Manila tags and trimmed about 1 cm from the bottom so they could fit comfotably inside the envelopes. Here is the first one: I used the same techniques as on the front cover but only used Distress Inks for the backgrounds. The vocal images on both tags are from the Found Relatives cards. Here is a close up of a steampunk charm I added to the top: And here is the second tag: And a closeup of the top, the sentiment on the little banner is from the Donna Downey Empowered Words set. And here you can see how both tags fit snugly inside the little folder: Well, that's it, well done if you are still with me and I hope I made it all more or less clear.... This post is in conjunction with the Art 'n Soul Newsletter article "Technique of the Week" This post is less of a technique and more about trying out the new Distress Oxide inks. I was skeptical in the beginning, but now I know I LOVE these new inks. Oxide inks are a hybrid of Pigment ink and Dye ink. Where Dye inks soak into your paper, Pigment inks sit on top and take longer to dry. The Oxides have the best of both of these worlds. They blend like a dream, and they stamp better as well. They also incorporate the best of the water-reactive properties of regular Distress ink. there are 12 colors currently available, and Ranger is overwhelmed with orders, so we have to get in line; but we WILL get them in! Right now we have 8 of the 12 colors for demo'ing at Art 'n Soul, and we will be happy to demo them for you. For my card, I first blended Fossilized Amber, Spiced Marmalade, Fired Brick, and Broken China, adding a little Wilted Violet at the end. I sprayed the card, using the Tim Holtz spritzer bottle, which makes large and small droplets. You can almost do no wrong with these inks, whatever I have done looks good. However, I wanted to stamp and emboss with White Diamond embossing powder, and I decided that my inks were a little too light for the white to pop out properly. This panel is actually very pretty in real life, and it is at Art 'n Soul for you to see Starting over with new colors was no problem, because playing with these inks is just so much fun. For the second try, I started with Wilted Violet. I added Broken China (I LOVE the combo of these 2 colors), Cracked Pistachio, and Spiced Marmalade. Since the inks have pigment, they are so easy to blend If you compare the colors side by side to regular dye based Distress colors, they will look just a little different. This is because these Oxide colors with pigment sit on top of the paper, and the regular dye based ones soak in. I spritzed it to get the water spots, and decided it was still too pale. I made sure to dry the spots and went over the card with some Faded Jeans, Fired Brick, and intensified the colors in the Wilted Violet, Broken China, and Cracked Pistachio. I love how rich the colors are This time I thought the colors were dark enough, and so I added more droplets with the spritzer, and dried the card thoroughly. I stamped my image and sentiment with Versamark ink and embossed with White Diamond embossing powder by JudiKins. I added a little of the Wilted Violet to the center of the largest flower in the stamp. I hope you'll give these new inks a try. I think you'll find them as fun to work with as I did.
