The color wheel dates back to the mid 1600s. Sir Isaac Newton and A.H. Munsell shared the color wheel concept of likening color notation to music.

Stunningly hand painted MAKKUM 6-TILE TABLEAU! The central theme is a sailing ship of some sort on the high seas with the sails being the focus of the tableau. There 2 sailors depicted and the rudder has a "head/bust" on top. There are seabirds aloft and a huge billowing cloud behind the sails. There are a total of 3 other sailing ships depicted The blue palette is soft and the darkest cobalt blue is the bowsprit. The feeling I get from upon viewing this art piece...is a "blustery day on the sea"...it's not stormy, neither is it calm. The bottom right tile on its corner, is marked " MAKKUM. " but i observe no other mark and that's unusual if it were a Makkum Tichelaar make. There are other Makkum potters, but they don't mark their wares that way either. Hmmm? (if you have info on this mark, i would appreciate a heads up) Perfect for that special Dad for Fathers Day or a super-kewl man-cave gift! SPECS- about 15.5"H x 10 7/8"W overall, each tile is roughly 5 1/8" square CONDITION - Excellent! - tiles were white-plastered to a piece of plywood. The grout is uneven and is missing some grout here and there. - there are glaze pops that don't quite break the surface of the glaze, but can be seen at an angle and felt. - bottom right tile that has the MAKKUM signature, there's a centimeter of missing glaze...it appears to be production related, not post production. This same tile on the top right corner is also missing a piece of glaze cause by production. (glaze skips) - left center tile also has two minor/small glaze pops. - (the blue stuff you see on the plywood is tack i used to make it stick to an easel, i'll remove it for shipping) MY SUBJECTIVE GRADING GUIDE > Outstanding - pristine, like new Excellent - excellent as it's antique/vintage (minor issues) Good - moderate issues Fair - more than moderate issues, okay for display, but not a prized piece Poor - major issues = a bargain deserving of continued existence 🌴 🌴 🌴 🌴 🌴 🌴 🌴 WHERE AMERICA'S DAY BEGINS! 🌴 🌴 🌴 🌴 🌴 🌴 🌴 🌺 HÅFA ADAI from the tropical island paradise of GUAHAN (Guam/USA) 🌺 MAKKUM TICHELAAR Info > 1594 to present Makkum Tichelaar is considered the oldest Delft manufacturer dating from 1594. (not to be confused with a similar claim of the oldest Delft manufacturer in Delft, de Porceleyne Fles) (both claims are true) Their pieces are hand-painted to this day! Pieces go for thousands of Euros! I had an opportunity to visit the town of Makkum, but since it was Koninginnedag (Queen's Birthday), the factory was closed but I was able to visit a corner shop that had hundreds and hundreds of older pieces! It was pure nirvana for an addicted Delft collector! On 1 November 2014 they stopped producing stock for their permanent collection of consumer products. As from 1 January 2015 they have put together a collection of their traditional earthenware that is available only through their webshop. These products are produced in batches. This means that orders are grouped and in principle are produced only once every quarter. "The difference between Makkum Tichelaar's wares and other Delftware, is that they paint on the tin glaze and then refire. This leads to a little of bleeding, like Flow Blue wares. Delftware is painted on the bisque, so their wares are a little more sharper and more pronounced. The blue painting with cobalt oxide gets, because of the fusion with the underlying glaze, a brilliance that has been impossible to make with later decoration techniques. The decorative pottery is created with love and each piece is entirely handpainted. No print or stamp techniques thereby helps the painter." ⚘ 🌷 ⚘ 🌷 ⚘ 🌷 ⚘ 🌷 ⚘ 🌷 ⚘ 🌷 ⚘ 🌷 ⚘ 🌷 ⚘ 🌷 ⚘ 🌷 ⚘ 🌷 ⚘ 🌷 ⚘ 🌷 ⚘ 🌷 ⚘ 🌷 ⚘ Delft Chargers were highly sought after display pieces as an alternative to framed oil paintings. Royalty, nobility, wealthy merchants and even rich farmers acquired these examples of hand painted art! Many of the depicted themes were actually copies of popular (now famous) original oil paintings of the Dutch artists and masters. The other themes primarily were Chinois patterns copied from the Ming imports. When rich farmers held a large celebration, they would clear out the barn and then hang Delft Chargers either on the horse stalls or the walls of the barn as part of the party decor for the rustic party venue! “Old Delft” were expensive and mostly used to flaunt their owner's status and wealth by displaying in their formal dining rooms and other public rooms of their estates. These Delft pieces were exported all over the Western world including the New World as found in Williamsburg and other colonial towns in both North and South America. Delft manufacturers were threatened by Chinese imports, but when China went through their times of troubles and the kilns destroyed and potters killed, the Delft makers capitalized on the sudden rarity of Chinese exports and imitated Ming and Wanli/Kraak patterns to supply the continually growing demand. Eventually Delft potters began using their own patterns and incorporating what has become “iconic” themes of Dutch Windmills, Canals, Nautical and Biblical renditions. When the Chinese Imperial government stabilized, kilns were rebuilt, but found they had lost most of their market share. To regain that share, they began copying the Dutch designs. The humor in all this, is that many of the Dutch designs were copies of Chinese patterns! With all these cross-copying of patterns, meaning was lost and “fanciful” unreal patterns resulted! 🌷 🌷 🌷 🌷 🌷 🌷 🌷 🌷 🌷 🌷 🌷 🌷 🌷 🌷 🌷 🌷 🌷 🌷 🌷 🌷 🌷 🌷 🌷 🌷 July 4th Independence Day > USA July 21st Liberation Day WWII > GUAM/USA Sep 14th Liberation Day WWII > MAASTRICHT, NL Just wanted to take the opportunity to share this regarding WWII and the people of Holland in regards to the people of the US > Near Maastricht, in Margraten, is the Netherlands American Cemetery. It is the only American military cemetery in Holland and where 8,301 of our soldiers rest eternal. There are Tablets of the Missing that contain 1,722 names. It's a beautiful and fitting resting place. I mention this because, we visited in 2010 and it was early May just after Koninginnedag (Queen's Birthday) as we were meeting a Dutch aunt who's married to a German citizen and they live in Germany and Maastricht is the halfway point from where we were staying. We were surprised and amazed at the thousands of visitors and the fresh flowers on EVERY GRAVE! It turns out, that ever since the cemetery was first created, every US Soldier's grave had been adopted by a nearby local family (also Belgian and German families across the border) and is visited several times a year and flowers laid and the soldier honored and remembered on certain holidays! It brought us to tears that after all this time, that the Dutch continue to honor and remember our soldier's ultimate sacrifice in helping to liberate their country! Thank you to the anonymous Dutch, Belgian, and German families who remember and honor our fallen! ⚘ 🌷 ⚘ 🌷 ⚘ 🌷 ⚘ 🌷 ⚘ 🌷 ⚘ 🌷 ⚘ 🌷 ⚘ 🌷 ⚘ 🌷 ⚘ 🌷 ⚘ 🌷 ⚘ 🌷 ⚘ 🌷 ⚘ 🌷 ⚘ 🌷 ⚘ I'm not an expert on Porcelain. Adapted from my favorite yeasted, slow-rise focaccia recipe — overnight refrigerator focaccia — this recipe replaces the yeast with a sourdough starter. UPDATE: Video guidance is here! Watch up above or click the link below in the recipe card. What you need to make this recipe...: ...a sourdough starter. I bought mine from Breadtopia. It was easy to activate. There are no instructions on the package itself; follow the instructions on the video here. ...time. Once your starter is ready to go, this recipe requires an initial 4- 18 hour rise, followed by a second 4- to 6-hour second rise. After the initial rise (depending on the time of year and temperature of your kitchen), you can deflate the dough, and stick it in the fridge for 8 to 10 hours (maybe longer), which might help you regarding your schedule. Keep in mind, when you remove the dough from the fridge and transfer it to a pan, it will still need to rise for another 5- to 6- hours. ...water. Apparently, chlorine in water can adversely affect sourdough. Leaving water at room temperature for 24 hours will allow most of the chlorine to escape. When I am in the habit of making sourdough bread, I fill a large pitcher with water and leave it out at room temperature. I use this for my sourdough breads and starter. Truth be told, I've used water straight from the tap and have not noticed a difference. Water quantity: Depending on where you live and the time of year, you may need to cut the water back. If you live in a humid environment, for instance, I would suggest starting with 430 g water. If you are not using bread flour, you also may need to cut the water back a bit. Timing: The more I make sourdough, the more I realize so much depends on the time of year and the temperature of my kitchen. In the summer, because it is so warm, the first rise (bulk fermentation) takes between 4 - 6 hours; in the winter the first rise takes 12 - 18 hours. The key with this recipe is to make sure the first rise doesn't go too long — you want the dough to nearly double. A straight sided vessel (as opposed to a bowl) makes gauging the first rise easier. (Note: If your dough rises above double, don't despair ... recently my dough tripled in volume during an overnight rise, and the resulting focaccia was still delicious, light, airy, etc.) A few thoughts: If you are making this focaccia in the summer (northern hemisphere), use 50 g of starter and check the dough every couple of hours. If you are making this in the winter, use 100 g of starter, and plan for a long first rise. Troubleshooting: If you have issues with your dough being too sticky, please read this post: Why is my sourdough so sticky? The 4 common mistakes. Flour choice: I've been using King Arthur Flour's special patent flour — bought a 50-lb. bag of it at Restaurant Depot. Its protein content, 12.7%, is the same as the protein content of its bread flour. I also have used all-purpose flour (11.7%) with success, but I recommend bread flour, which seems to be more reliable for people especially those living in humid climates. If you only have ap flour on hand, you may consider reducing the water a bit — bread flour absorbs slightly more liquid than all-purpose flour.
