Here's a hands-on, creative way to practice defining idioms, and it's just in time for Saint Patrick's Day! This is an engaging activity where your students complete a worksheet where they must read several sentences and use context clues to determine the meaning of the idiom. The finished products make a unique bulletin board or fun school hallway display! It can also be used as a novel entry in an interactive notebook! More than 20 idioms are included in this project! Student-friendly directions with photos are included so that you can place the directions under your document camera, and students can refer to them as they complete the project. (An answer key is also included.) Here's what teachers like you had to say about using this activity with their students: Jennifer H. said, "This was a great activity to extend our lessons regarding figurative language and tie in St. Patrick's Day at the same time. The kids enjoyed having a fun independent activity to keep them motivated!" Whitney B. said, "My students loved being able to show what they knew for common figurative language. It had been a while since we had talked idioms. This resource was a great refresher and also allowed for them to expand their knowledge." Lorrie M. said, "My students LOVED this hands-on activity to expand their understanding of idioms." Sara B. said, "My students LOVED learning about idioms this year and this craftivity was so much fun! The activities reinforced our standards in a creative and meaningful way." The Metal Insets are a series of shapes and frames designed to directly prepare the child's hand for writing. I very much enjoy this activity in the classroom and appreciate the writing skills it helps develop specifically lightness of touch and keeping the pencil within limits. As with other Montessori materials, a sequential order of further lessons are introduced to the child as each presentation is mastered. This is where the little booklet I recently made comes in handy because I always forget the order! The booklet, which displays the order of lessons for the Metal Insets, will be housed in a special location in the classroom. Here are the first four pages prior to assembling them together (apologies for the odd lighting...): 1. Initial presentation; 2. Two Figures, Two Colors; 3. Three Figures, three colors; 4. One figure, two colors The next four pages: 5. One shape, three positions; 6. Introduction of pastel (colored) paper; 7. Design; 8. Shading Here are the pages assembled with a binder ring... ...and here it is in its new home in our classroom. Now, I have a handy reminder of the order of presentations while the children have an interesting booklet to leaf through! Montessori Monday Link-Up

I am ready to unveil my next set of Nomenclature Cards. Yippee! I worked on these over the weekend and got finished in a hurry. I am learning how to do some fun new tricks which are helping me to get better at creating useful images for card materials. This free downloadable set of zoology nomenclature cards is for the study of the 5 classes of vertebrates: birds, fish, amphibians, mammals, and reptiles. They are meant for introduction AFTER the children have been exposed to real life members of these classes of vertebrates. This is a great montessori zoology manual that I highly recommend. Zoology is fascinating to children. Heck, it is incredibly fascinating to me. The first time I ever learned about the alternation of generations in the jellyfish, I was teaching my oldest child and our homeschool group about cnidarians when she was about 8 or 9. I was simply dumbfounded that something as alien-like as that could exist on our own planet --- and that I never had had the chance to learn anything about it, even in college. I simply LOVED every opportunity I had to explore the world of living and extinct animals with my own children. They are some of my fondest memories from my children's homeschooling years. You can find the Parts of Books blacklines Here. This set comes in your choice of Print or D'nealian font and includes the following: Parts of the Bird - bird, head, beak, eye, body, breast, tail, wing, feet, claws Parts of the Fish - fish, head, eye, mouth, nostril, gills, torso, dorsal fin, caudal fin, anal fin, pelvic fin, pectoral fin, lateral line, scales Parts of the Frog - frog, head, eye, nostrils, mouth, ear, neck, trunk, forelegs, hind legs, feet Parts of the Horse - horse, head, eye, forehead, nostril, mouth, neck, forelegs, hooves, shoulder, hind legs, tail, torso, mane, hindquarters, ears Parts of the Turtle - turtle, head, eye, nostrils, mouth, neck, carapace, plastron, tail, fore limbs, hind limbs, claws Zoology Nomenclature Set - Print click on picture to link to file Zoology Nomenclature Set - D'nealian click on picture to link to file
